1 The LORD said to Moses,	1 Yahveh habló a Moisés y le dijo:
2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."	2 «Envía algunos hombres, uno por cada tribu paterna, para que exploren la tierra de Canaán que voy a dar a los israelitas. Que sean todos principales entre ellos.»
3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;	3 Los envió Moisés, según la orden de Yahveh, desde el desierto de Parán: todos ellos eran jefes de los israelitas.
4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;	4 Sus nombres eran éstos: por la tribu de Rubén, Sammúa, hijo de Zakkur;
5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;	5 por la tribu de Simeón, Safat, hijo de Jorí;
6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;	6 por la tribu de Judá, Caleb, hijo de Yefunné;
7 Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;	7 por la tribu de Isacar, Yigal, hijo de José;

16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.	16 Esos son los nombres de los que envió Moisés a explorar el país. Pero a Hosea, hijo de Nun, Moisés le llamo Josué.
17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,	17 Moisés los envió a explorar el país de Canaán, y les dijo: «Subid ahí al Négueb y después subiréis a la montaña.
18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?	18 Reconoced el país, a ver qué tal es, y el pueblo que lo habita, si es fuerte o débil, escaso o numeroso;
19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?	19 y qué tal es el país en que viven, bueno o malo; cómo son las ciudades en que habitan, abiertas o fortificadas;
20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.	20 y cómo es la tierra, fértil o pobre, si tiene árboles o no. Tened valor y traed algunos productos del país.» Era el tiempo de las primeras uvas.
21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.	21 Subieron y exploraron el país, desde el desierto de Sin hasta Rejob, a la Entrada de Jamat.
22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)	22 Subieron por el Négueb y llegaron hasta Hebrón, donde residían Ajimán, Sesay y Talmay, los descendientes de Anaq. Hebrón había sido fundada siete años antes que Tanis de Egipto.
23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.	23 Llegaron al Valle de Eskol y cortaron allí un sarmiento con un racimo de uva, que transportaron con una pértiga entre dos, y también granadas e higos.
24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.	24 Al lugar aquél se le llamó Valle de Eskol, por el racimo que cortaron allí los israelitas.
25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,	25 Al cabo de cuarenta días volvieron de explorar la tierra.
26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.	26 Fueron y se presentaron a Moisés, a Aarón y a toda la comunidad de los israelitas, en el desierto de Parán, en Cadés. Les hicieron una relación a ellos y a toda la comunidad, y les mostraron los productos del país.
27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.	27 Les contaron lo siguiente: «Fuimos al país al que nos enviaste, y en verdad que mana leche y miel; éstos son sus productos.
28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.	28 Sólo que el pueblo que habita en el país es poderoso; las ciudades, fortificadas y muy grandes; hasta hemos visto allí descendientes de Anaq.
29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."	29 El amalecita ocupa la región del Négueb; el hitita, el amorreo y el jebuseo ocupan la montaña; el cananeo, la orilla del mar y la ribera del Jordán.»
30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."	30 Caleb acalló al pueblo delante de Moisés, diciendo: «Subamos, y conquistaremos el país, porque sin duda podremos con él.»
31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."	31 Pero los hombres que habían ido con él dijeron: «No podemos subir contra ese pueblo, porque es más fuerte que nosotros.»
32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,	32 Y empezaron a hablar mal a los israelitas del país que habían explorado, diciendo: «El país que hemos recorrido y explorado es un país que devora a sus propios habitantes. Toda la gente que hemos visto allí es gente alta.
33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."	33 Hemos visto también gigantes, hijos de Anaq, de la raza de los gigantes. Nosotros nos teníamos ante ellos como saltamontes, y eso mismo les parecíamos a ellos.»
