1 The LORD said to Moses,	1 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:
2 "Send men to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You shall send one man from each ancestral tribe, all of them princes."	2 "Envoie des hommes, un par tribu, pour reconnaître le pays de Canaan, que je donne auxIsraélites. Vous enverrez tous leurs princes."
3 So Moses dispatched them from the desert of Paran, as the LORD had ordered. All of them were leaders among the Israelites;	3 Sur l'ordre de Yahvé, Moïse les envoya du désert de Parân. Ces hommes étaient tous chefs desIsraélites.
4 by name they were: Shammua, son of Zaccur, of the tribe of Reuben;	4 En voici les noms: Pour la tribu de Ruben, Shammua, fils de Zakkur;
5 Shaphat, son of Hori, of the tribe of Simeon;	5 pour la tribu de Siméon, Shaphat, fils de Hori;
6 Caleb, son of Jephunneh, of the tribe of Judah;	6 pour la tribu de Juda, Caleb, fils de Yephunné;
7 Igal (son of Joseph), of the tribe of Issachar;	7 pour la tribu d'Issachar, Yigéal, fils de Yoseph;
8 Hoshea, son of Nun, of the tribe of Ephraim;	8 pour la tribu d'Ephraïm, Hoshéa, fils de Nûn;
9 Palti, son of Raphu, of the tribe of Benjamin;	9 pour la tribu de Benjamin, Palti, fils de Raphu;
10 Gaddiel, son of Sodi, of the tribe of Zebulun;	10 pour la tribu de Zabulon, Gaddiel, fils de Sodi;
11 Gaddi, son of Susi, of the tribe of Manasseh, for the Josephites, with	11 pour la tribu de Joseph, pour la tribu de Manassé, Gaddi, fils de Susi;
12 Ammiel, son of Gemalli, of the tribe of Dan;	12 pour la tribu de Dan, Ammiel, fils de Gemalli;
13 Sethur, son of Michael, of the tribe of Asher;	13 pour la tribu d'Asher, Setur, fils de Mikaël;
14 Nahbi, son of Vophsi, of the tribe of Naphtali;	14 pour la tribu de Nephtali, Nahbi, fils de Vaphsi;
15 Geuel, son of Machi, of the tribe of Gad.	15 pour la tribu de Gad, Géuel, fils de Maki.
16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent out to reconnoiter the land. But Hoshea, son of Nun, Moses called Joshua.	16 Tels sont les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya reconnaître le pays. Puis Moïse donna àHoshéa, fils de Nûn, le nom de Josué.
17 In sending them to reconnoiter the land of Canaan, Moses said to them, "Go up here in the Negeb, up into the highlands,	17 Moïse les envoya reconnaître le pays de Canaan: "Montez au Négeb, montez ensuite dans lamontagne.
18 and see what kind of land it is. Are the people living there strong or weak, few or many?	18 Voyez ce qu'est le pays; ce qu'est le peuple qui l'habite, fort ou faible, clairsemé ou nombreux;
19 Is the country in which they live good or bad? Are the towns in which they dwell open or fortified?	19 ce qu'est le pays où il habite, bon ou mauvais; ce que sont les villes où il habite, camps ou villesfortifiées;
20 Is the soil fertile or barren, wooded or clear? And do your best to get some of the fruit of the land." It was then the season for early grapes.	20 ce qu'est le pays, fertile ou pauvre, boisé ou non. Ayez bon courage. Prenez des produits dupays." C'était l'époque des premiers raisins.
21 So they went up and reconnoitered the land from the desert of Zin as far as where Rehob adjoins Labo of Hamath.	21 Ils montèrent reconnaître le pays, depuis le désert de Cîn jusqu'à Rehob, l'Entrée de Hamat.
22 Going up by way of the Negeb, they reached Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, descendants of the Anakim, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)	22 Ils montèrent par le Négeb et parvinrent à Hébron, où se trouvaient Ahimân, Sheshaï et Talmaï,les Anaqim. (Hébron avait été fondée sept ans avant Tanis d'Egypte.)
23 They also reached the Wadi Eshcol, where they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes on it, which two of them carried on a pole, as well as some pomegranates and figs.	23 Ils parvinrent au val d'Eshkol; ils y coupèrent un sarment et une grappe de raisin qu'ilsemportèrent à deux, sur une perche, ainsi que des grenades et des figues.
24 It was because of the cluster the Israelites cut there that they called the place Wadi Eshcol.	24 On appela ce lieu val d'Eshkol, à cause de la grappe qu'y avaient coupée les Israélites.
25 After reconnoitering the land for forty days they returned,	25 Au bout de 40 jours, ils revinrent de cette reconnaissance du pays.
26 met Moses and Aaron and the whole community of the Israelites in the desert of Paran at Kadesh, made a report to them all, and showed them the fruit of the country.	26 Ils allèrent trouver Moïse, Aaron, et toute la communauté d'Israël, dans le désert de Parân, àCadès. Ils leur firent leur rapport, ainsi qu'à toute la communauté, et leur montrèrent les produits du pays.
27 They told Moses: "We went into the land to which you sent us. It does indeed flow with milk and honey, and here is its fruit.	27 Ils leur firent ce récit: "Nous sommes allés dans le pays où tu nous as envoyés. En vérité, ilruisselle de lait et de miel; en voici les produits.
28 However, the people who are living in the land are fierce, and the towns are fortified and very strong. Besides, we saw descendants of the Anakim there.	28 Toutefois, le peuple qui l'habite est puissant; les villes sont fortifiées, très grandes; nous y avonsmême vu des descendants d'Anaq.
29 Amalekites live in the region of the Negeb; Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites dwell in the highlands, and Canaanites along the seacoast and the banks of the Jordan."	29 Les Amalécites occupent la région du Négeb; les Hittites, les Amorites et les Jébuséens, lamontagne; les Cananéens, le bord de la mer et les rives du Jourdain."
30 Caleb, however, to quiet the people toward Moses, said, "We ought to go up and seize the land, for we can certainly do so."	30 Caleb harangua le peuple assemblé près de Moïse: "Il faut marcher, disait-il, et conquérir cepays: nous en sommes capables."
31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people; they are too strong for us."	31 Mais les hommes qui l'avaient accompagné répondirent: "Nous ne pouvons pas marcher contrece peuple, car il est plus fort que nous."
32 So they spread discouraging reports among the Israelites about the land they had scouted, saying, "The land that we explored is a country that consumes its inhabitants. And all the people we saw there are huge men,	32 Et ils se mirent à décrier devant les Israélites le pays qu'ils avaient été reconnaître: "Le pays quenous sommes allés reconnaître est un pays qui dévore ses habitants. Tous ceux que nous y avons vus sont deshommes de haute taille.
33 veritable giants (the Anakim were a race of giants); we felt like mere grasshoppers, and so we must have seemed to them."	33 Nous y avons aussi vu des géants (les fils d'Anaq, descendance des Géants). Nous, nous faisionsl'effet de sauterelles, et c'est bien aussi l'effet que nous leur faisions."
