1 Now Gorgias took five thousand infantry and a thousand picked cavalry, and this detachment set out at night	1 Gorgia prese con sé cinquemila uomini e mille cavalieri scelti. L'armata partì di notte,
2 in order to attack the camp of the Jews and take them by surprise. Some men from the citadel were their guides.	2 in modo da piombare addosso all'armata dei Giudei e colpirli all'improvviso. Gli uomini dell'Acra gli facevano da guida.
3 Judas heard of it, and himself set out with his soldiers to attack the king's army at Emmaus,	3 Giuda, appena lo seppe, partì anch'egli con i suoi guerrieri per colpire le forze del re che erano in Emmaus,
4 while the latter's forces were still scattered away from the camp.	4 mentre le schiere erano ancora disperse, lontane dal campo.
5 During the night Gorgias came into the camp of Judas, and found no one there; so he began to hunt for them in the mountains, saying, "They are fleeing from us."	5 Gorgia giunse di notte al campo di Giuda, ma non vi trovò nessuno. 6 But at daybreak Judas appeared in the plain with three thousand men, who lacked such armor and swords as they would have wished.	6 Giuda, invece, sul far del giorno, apparve nella pianura con tremila uomini, i quali però non avevano né armature né spade, come avrebbero desiderato.
7 They saw the army of the Gentiles, strong and breastplated, flanked with cavalry, and made up of expert soldiers.	7 Videro che l'accampamento dei gentili era potente e fortificato e che la cavalleria lo circondava all'intorno e tutti erano esperti di guerra.
8 Judas said to the men with him: "Do not be afraid of their numbers or dread their attack.	8 Giuda perciò disse agli uomini che erano con lui: "Non temete la loro moltitudine e non abbiate paura del loro ardore.
9 Remember how our fathers were saved in the Red Sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army.	9 Ricordate come i nostri padri furono salvati nel Mar Rosso, quando il faraone li inseguiva con un esercito.
10 So now let us cry to Heaven in the hope that he will favor us, remember his covenant with our fathers, and destroy this army before us today.	10 Ora innalziamo grida al Cielo, se mai voglia compiacersi di noi, ricordarsi dell'alleanza dei padri e abbattere quest'armata davanti a noi oggi.
11 All the Gentiles shall know that there is One who redeems and delivers Israel."	11 Allora tutte le genti riconosceranno che vi è chi redime e salva Israele".
12 When the foreigners looked up and saw them marching toward them,	12 Quando gli stranieri alzarono gli occhi e se li videro venire avanti,
13 they came out of their camp for battle, and the men with Judas blew the trumpet.	13 uscirono dall'accampamento per combattere. Quelli di Giuda, suonate le trombe,

15 Their whole rearguard fell by the sword, and they were pursued as far as Gazara and the plains of Judea, to Azotus and Jamnia. Li inseguirono fino a Ghezer e fino alle pianure dell'Idumea, di Asdod e di Iamnia; caddero circa tremila uomini.
16 When Judas and the army returned from the pursuit,	16 Giuda pertanto, tornato indietro con l'esercito dal loro inseguimento,
17 he said to the people: "Do not be greedy for the plunder, for there is a fight ahead of us,	17 disse al popolo: "Mettete da parte la brama del bottino, poiché un'altra battaglia ci sta davanti.
18 and Gorgias and his army are near us on the mountain. But now stand firm against our enemies and overthrow them. Afterward you can freely take the plunder."	18 Gorgia con l'esercito è sulla montagna vicina a noi. Ora perciò resistete davanti ai nostri nemici e combattete contro di essi; poi raccoglierete il bottino con libertà".
19 As Judas was finishing this speech, a detachment appeared, looking down from the mountain.	19 Mentre Giuda stava ancora per finire di dire tali cose, ecco che una schiera apparve, sbucando dalla montagna.
20 They saw that their army had been put to flight and their camp was being burned. The smoke that could be seen indicated what had happened.	20 Videro che i loro erano stati messi in fuga e che il campo era in fiamme. Il fumo che si vedeva rivelava infatti ciò che era accaduto.
21 When they realized this, they were terrified; and when they also saw the army of Judas in the plain ready to attack,	21 Vedendo ciò, furono presi da grande paura. Quindi, vedendo pure che l'esercito di Giuda era in pianura, pronto per lo scontro,
22 they all fled to Philistine territory.	22 se ne fuggirono tutti verso la terra dei Filistei.
23 Then Judas went back to plunder the camp, and his men collected much gold and silver, violet and crimson cloth, and great treasure.	23 Giuda allora tornò al bottino dell'accampamento e raccolse molto oro e argento, stoffe tinte di porpora violetta e marina e ricchezze in quantità.
24 As they returned, they were singing hymns and glorifying Heaven, "for he is good, for his mercy endures forever."	24 Andando via, poi, inneggiavano e benedicevano il Cielo, perché è buono ed eterna è la sua misericordia.
25 Thus Israel had a great deliverance that day.	25 Fu quello un giorno di liberazione per Israele.
26 But those of the foreigners who had escaped went and told Lysias all that had occurred.	26 Quanti degli stranieri si erano salvati, andati da Lisia, gli annunziarono tutto ciò che era successo.

29 They came into Idumea and camped at Beth-zur, and Judas met them with ten thousand men.	29 Vennero nell'Idumea e si accamparono a Bet-Zur. Giuda allora gli mosse contro con diecimila uomini
30 Seeing that the army was strong, he prayed thus: "Blessed are you, O Savior of Israel, who broke the rush of the mighty one by the hand of your servant David and delivered the camp of the Philistines into the hand of Jonathan, the son of Saul, and his armor-bearer.	30 e, quando ebbe veduto il loro potente schieramento, pregò dicendo: "Benedetto sei tu, o Salvatore d'Israele, che piegasti l'impeto del gigante per mano del tuo servo Davide e consegnasti l'esercito dei Filistei nelle mani di Gionata, figlio di Saul, e di colui che portava le sue armi.
31 Give this army into the hands of your people Israel; make them ashamed of their troops and their cavalry.	31 Allo stesso modo fa' cadere questo esercito nelle mani del tuo popolo Israele; che restino confusi nella loro forza e con la loro cavalleria.
32 Strike them with fear, weaken the boldness of their strength, and let them tremble at their own destruction.	32 Immetti in loro spavento e spezza l'audacia della loro forza, e siano travolti nella loro disfatta.
33 Strike them down by the sword of those who love you, that all who know your name may hymn your praise."	33 Gettali sotto la spada di coloro che ti amano; ti lodino con inni tutti quelli che conoscono il tuo nome".
34 Then they engaged in battle, and about five thousand of Lysias' men fell in hand-to-hand fighting.	34 Si scagliarono gli uni contro gli altri e caddero davanti a loro circa cinquemila uomini del campo di Lisia.
35 When Lysias saw his ranks beginning to give way, and the increased boldness of Judas, whose men were ready either to live or to die bravely, he withdrew to Antioch and began to recruit mercenaries so as to return to Judea with greater numbers.	35 Lisia, vedendo la ritirata della sua armata e l'audacia dimostrata da quelli di Giuda, come cioè erano pronti a vivere o a morire da prodi, fece ritorno ad Antiochia, dove cominciò a reclutare mercenari stranieri più numerosi per portarsi di nuovo in Giudea.
36 Then Judas and his brothers said, "Now that our enemies have been crushed, let us go up to purify the sanctuary and rededicate it."	36 Intanto Giuda e i suoi fratelli dissero: "Ecco, i nostri nemici sono stati sconfitti. Andiamo perciò a purificare il tempio e a restaurarlo".
37 So the whole army assembled, and went up to Mount Zion.	37 Si riunì, allora, tutto l'esercito e salirono sul monte Sion.
38 They found the sanctuary desolate, the altar desecrated, the gates burnt, weeds growing in the courts as in a forest or on some mountain, and the priests' chambers demolished.	38 Videro così il santuario deserto, l'altare profanato, le porte bruciate, le piante cresciute nei cortili come in un bosco o come su una montagna, le celle in rovina.
39 Then they tore their clothes and made great lamentation; they sprinkled their heads with ashes	39 Si stracciarono le vesti, fecero un grande lamento, si cosparsero di cenere,
40 and fell with their faces to the ground. And when the signal was given with trumpets, they cried out to Heaven.	40 caddero con la faccia a terra e, suonate le trombe per segnale, elevarono grida al cielo.
41 Judas appointed men to attack those in the citadel, while he purified the sanctuary.	41 Giuda allora ordinò agli uomini di combattere quelli che erano nell'Acra fino a quando egli non avesse purificato il santuario.
42 He chose blameless priests, devoted to the law;	42 Scelse pure dei sacerdoti senza macchia, osservanti della legge,
43 these purified the sanctuary and carried away the stones of the Abomination to an unclean place.	43 i quali purificarono il santuario e trasportarono le pietre della contaminazione in un luogo impuro.
44 They deliberated what ought to be done with the altar of holocausts that had been desecrated.	44 Si consultarono poi circa l'altare degli olocausti che era stato profanato: "Che dobbiamo fare?".
45 The happy thought came to them to tear it down, lest it be a lasting shame to them that the Gentiles had defiled it; so they tore down the altar.	45 Venne loro la felice idea di demolirlo, affinché non fosse per loro causa di disonore, poiché i gentili lo avevano contaminato. 46 They stored the stones in a suitable place on the temple hill, until a prophet should come and decide what to do with them.	46 e ne deposero le pietre sul monte del tempio, in un luogo conveniente, in attesa che venga un profeta e che si pronunzi a loro riguardo.
47 Then they took uncut stones, according to the law, and built a new altar like the former one.	47 Poi presero pietre intatte conformi alla legge e costruirono un nuovo altare sul modello del precedente.
48 They also repaired the sanctuary and the interior of the temple and purified the courts.	48 Ripararono il santuario e l'interno del tempio e consacrarono i cortili.
49 They made new sacred vessels and brought the lampstand, the altar of incense, and the table into the temple.	49 Fecero fare nuovi arredi sacri e portarono dentro il tempio il candelabro, l'altare dei profumi e la tavola.
50 Then they burned incense on the altar and lighted the lamps on the lampstand, and these illuminated the temple.	50 Bruciarono incenso sull'altare e accesero le lampade del candelabro, che risplendettero nel tempio.
51 They also put loaves on the table and hung up curtains. Thus they finished all the work they had undertaken.	51 Posero sulla tavola i pani, distesero le cortine e terminarono tutti i lavori che avevano intrapreso.
52 Early in the morning on the twenty-fifth day of the ninth month, that is, the month of Chislev, in the year one hundred and forty-eight,	52 Il giorno 25 del nono mese, cioè il mese di Casleu dell'anno 148, si levarono di buon mattino
53 they arose and offered sacrifice according to the law on the new altar of holocausts that they had made.	53 e offrirono un sacrificio, in conformità alla legge, sul nuovo altare degli olocausti che avevano costruito.
54 On the anniversary of the day on which the Gentiles had defiled it, on that very day it was reconsecrated with songs, harps, flutes, and cymbals.	54 Esattamente nel tempo e nel giorno in cui i gentili lo avevano profanato, esso fu inaugurato con inni e a suon di cetre, di arpe e di cembali.
55 All the people prostrated themselves and adored and praised Heaven, who had given them success.	55 Tutto il popolo cadde con la faccia a terra, adorando e benedicendo il Cielo che li aveva condotti al successo.
56 For eight days they celebrated the dedication of the altar and joyfully offered holocausts and sacrifices of deliverance and praise.	56 Celebrarono la dedicazione dell'altare per otto giorni, offrirono sacrifici con allegrezza e offrirono pure un sacrificio di ringraziamento e di lode.
57 They ornamented the facade of the temple with gold crowns and shields; they repaired the gates and the priests' chambers and furnished them with doors.	57 Ornarono la facciata del tempio con corone d'oro e scudi, inaugurarono le porte e le celle e vi rimisero i battenti.
58 There was great joy among the people now that the disgrace of the Gentiles was removed.	58 Vi fu una stragrande allegrezza in mezzo al popolo e così fu cancellato l'obbrobrio dei gentili.
59 Then Judas and his brothers and the entire congregation of Israel decreed that the days of the dedication of the altar should be observed with joy and gladness on the anniversary every year for eight days, from the twenty-fifth day of the month Chislev.	59 Poi Giuda, i suoi fratelli e tutta l'assemblea d'Israele, stabilirono che i giorni della dedicazione dell'altare si celebrassero a loro tempo, ogni anno, per otto giorni, a partire dal 25 del mese di Casleu, con allegrezza e gioia.
60 At that time they built high walls and strong towers around Mount Zion, to prevent the Gentiles from coming and trampling over it as they had done before.	60 In quello stesso tempo costruirono pure, tutto intorno al monte Sion, alte mura e torri robuste per impedire che i gentili venissero a calpestarlo, come avevano fatto in precedenza.
61 Judas also placed a garrison there to protect it, and likewise fortified Beth-zur, that the people might have a stronghold facing Idumea.	61 Giuda vi stabilì un presidio per difenderlo e poi fortificò anche Bet-Zur, affinché il popolo avesse una difesa contro l'Idumea.
