"For burning incense you shall make an altar of acacia wood,1 “You shall also make an altar, for the burning of incense, from setim wood,
with a square surface, a cubit long, a cubit wide, and two cubits high, with horns that spring directly from it.2 having one cubit in length, and another in width, that is, four equal sides, and two cubits in height. Horns shall proceed from the same.
Its grate on top, its walls on all four sides, and its horns you shall plate with pure gold. Put a gold molding around it.3 And you shall clothe it with the purest gold, both its grating and the walls around it, and also the horns. And you shall make for it a crown of gold in a circle,
Underneath the molding you shall put gold rings, two on one side and two on the opposite side, as holders for the poles used in carrying it.4 and two gold rings under the crown on each side, so that the bars may be set in them and the altar may be carried.
Make the poles, too, of acacia wood and plate them with gold.5 Also, you shall make its bars of setim wood, and you shall overlay them with gold.
This altar you are to place in front of the veil that hangs before the ark of the commandments where I will meet you.6 And you shall set the altar opposite the veil, which hangs in front of the ark of the testimony, before the propitiatory with which the testimony is covered, where I will speak to you.
"On it Aaron shall burn fragrant incense. Morning after morning, when he prepares the lamps,7 And Aaron shall burn incense upon it, a sweet fragrance, in the morning. When he lights the lamps, he shall burn it.
and again in the evening twilight, when he lights the lamps, he shall burn incense. Throughout your generations this shall be the established incense offering before the LORD.8 And when he assembles them in the evening, he shall burn an everlasting incense before the Lord throughout your generations.
On this altar you shall not offer up any profane incense, or any holocaust or cereal offering; nor shall you pour out a libation upon it.9 You shall not offer upon it incense of another composition, nor an oblation, nor a victim; neither shall you offer libations.
Once a year Aaron shall perform the atonement rite on its horns. Throughout your generations this atonement is to be made once a year with the blood of the atoning sin offering. This altar is most sacred to the LORD."10 And Aaron shall pray over its horns once a year, with the blood of what was offered for sin. And he shall make atonement over it in your generations. It shall be the Holy of holies to the Lord.”
The LORD also said to Moses,11 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
"When you take a census of the Israelites who are to be registered, each one, as he is enrolled, shall give the LORD a forfeit for his life, so that no plague may come upon them for being registered.12 “When you have taken the sum of the sons of Israel, according to their number, each shall give a price for their souls to the Lord, and there will be no scourge among them, when they will be reviewed.
Everyone who enters the registered group must pay a half-shekel, according to the standard of the sanctuary shekel, twenty gerahs to the shekel. This payment of a half-shekel is a contribution to the LORD.13 Then all those who pass shall give by name: one half shekel, according to the measure at the temple. A shekel has twenty obols. The half part of a shekel shall be offered to the Lord.
Everyone of twenty years or more who enters the registered group must give this contribution to the LORD.14 He who has been numbered from twenty years and above shall give the price.
The rich need not give more, nor shall the poor give less, than a half-shekel in this contribution to the LORD to pay the forfeit for their lives.15 The rich shall not add to the half shekel, and the poor shall diminish nothing.
When you receive this forfeit money from the Israelites, you shall donate it to the service of the meeting tent, that there it may be the Israelites' reminder before the LORD, of the forfeit paid for their lives."16 And the money received, which was collected from the sons of Israel, you shall deliver for the uses of the tabernacle of the testimony, so that it may be a memorial of them before the Lord, and he may act favorably toward their souls.”
The LORD said to Moses,17 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
"For ablutions you shall make a bronze laver with a bronze base. Place it between the meeting tent and the altar, and put water in it.18 “You shall also make a bronze washtub with its base to wash in; and you shall place it between the tabernacle of the testimony and the altar. And when water has been added,
Aaron and his sons shall use it in washing their hands and feet.19 Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and feet in it:
When they are about to enter the meeting tent, they must wash with water, lest they die. Likewise when they approach the altar in their ministry, to offer an oblation to the LORD,20 when they enter the tabernacle of the testimony, and when they approach to the altar so as to offer incense to the Lord upon it,
they must wash their hands and feet, lest they die. This shall be a perpetual ordinance for him and his descendants throughout their generations."21 otherwise, they may die. This shall be an everlasting law to him, and to his offspring, throughout their successions.”
The LORD said to Moses,22 And the Lord spoke to Moses,
"Take the finest spices: five hundred shekels of free-flowing myrrh; half that amount, that is, two hundred and fifty shekels, of fragrant cinnamon; two hundred and fifty shekels of fragrant cane;23 saying: “Take for yourself aromatics: of the first and best myrrh, five hundred shekels, and of cinnamon half as much, that is, two hundred and fifty shekels; of sweet flag similarly two hundred and fifty,
five hundred shekels of cassia-all according to the standard of the sanctuary shekel; together with a hin of olive oil;24 but of cassia, five hundred shekels by the weight of the sanctuary, and of the oil of olives the measure of a hin.
and blend them into sacred anointing oil, perfumed ointment expertly prepared.25 And you shall make the holy oil of unction, an ointment composed with the skills of a perfumer,
With this sacred anointing oil you shall anoint the meeting tent and the ark of the commandments,26 and with it you shall anoint the tabernacle of the testimony, and the ark of the testament,
the table and all its appurtenances, the lampstand and its appurtenances, the altar of incense27 and the table with its vessels, and the lampstand and it utensils, the altars of incense
and the altar of holocausts with all its appurtenances, and the laver with its base.28 and of holocaust, and all the items that pertain to their rituals.
When you have consecrated them, they shall be most sacred; whatever touches them shall be sacred.29 And you shall sanctify everything, and they shall be the Holy of holies. He who will touch them must be sanctified.
Aaron and his sons you shall also anoint and consecrate as my priests.30 You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and you shall sanctify them, so that they may exercise the priesthood for me.
To the Israelites you shall say: As sacred anointing oil this shall belong to me throughout your generations.31 Likewise, you shall say to the sons of Israel: ‘This oil of unction will be holy to me throughout your generations.
It may not be used in any ordinary anointing of the body, nor may you make any other oil of a like mixture. It is sacred, and shall be treated as sacred by you.32 The flesh of man shall not be anointed from it, and you shall not make any similar compound, for it has been sanctified and it shall be holy to you.
Whoever prepares a perfume like this, or whoever puts any of this on a layman, shall be cut off from his kinsmen."33 Whatever man will have composed such a thing and have given it to a stranger, he shall be exterminated from his people.’ ”
The LORD told Moses, "Take these aromatic substances: storax and onycha and galbanum, these and pure frankincense in equal parts;34 And the Lord said to Moses: “Take to yourself aromatics: stacte, and onycha, galbanum of sweet odor, and the clearest frankincense, all these shall be of equal weight.
and blend them into incense. This fragrant powder, expertly prepared, is to be salted and so kept pure and sacred.35 And you shall make incense composed with the skills of a perfumer, diligently mixed, and pure, and most worthy of sanctification.
Grind some of it into fine dust and put this before the commandments in the meeting tent where I will meet you. This incense shall be treated as most sacred by you.36 And when you have crushed all these into a very fine powder, you shall place some of it before the tabernacle of the testimony, in the place where I will appear to you. The Holy of holies shall this incense be to you.
You may not make incense of a like mixture for yourselves; you must treat it as sacred to the LORD.37 You shall not make such a compound for your own uses, because it is holy to the Lord.
Whoever makes an incense like this for his own enjoyment of its fragrance, shall be cut off from his kinsmen."38 Whatever man will have made anything similar, so as to thoroughly enjoy its smell, he shall perish from his people.”
