Deutéronome 20

JERUSALEM	KING JAMES BIBLE
1 Lorsque tu partiras en guerre contre tes ennemis et que tu verras des chevaux, des chars et unpeuple plus nombreux que toi, tu n'en auras pas peur; car Yahvé ton Dieu est avec toi, lui qui t'a fait monter dupays d'Egypte.	1 When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the LORD thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
2 Quand vous serez sur le point d'engager le combat, le prêtre s'avancera et parlera au peuple.	2 And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,
3 Il leur dira: "Ecoute, Israël, vous qui êtes aujourd'hui sur le point d'engager le combat contrevos ennemis, que votre coeur ne faiblisse pas! N'ayez ni crainte ni angoisse, et ne tremblez pas devant eux.	3 And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, ye approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be ye terrified because of them;
4 Car Yahvé votre Dieu marche avec vous, pour combattre pour vous, contre vos ennemis, etvous sauver."	4 For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.
5 Puis les scribes parleront au peuple et diront: "Qui a bâti une maison neuve et ne l'a pasencore dédiée? Qu'il s'en aille et retourne chez lui, de peur qu'il ne périsse au combat et qu'un autre ne la dédie!	5 And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
6 "Qui a planté une vigne et n'en a pas encore cueilli les premiers fruits? Qu'il s'en aille etretourne chez lui, de peur qu'il ne périsse au combat et qu'un autre n'en cueille les premiers fruits!	6 And what man is he that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.
7 "Qui s'est fiancé à une femme et ne l'a pas encore épousée? Qu'il s'en aille et retourne chezlui, de peur qu'il ne périsse au combat et qu'un autre ne l'épouse!"	7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
8 Les scribes diront encore ceci au peuple: "Qui a peur et sent mollir son courage? Qu'il s'enaille et retourne chez lui, afin de ne pas faire fondre comme le sien le coeur de ses frères!"	8 And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart faint as well as his heart.
9 Puis, les scribes ayant achevé de parler au peuple, on placera à sa tête des chefs de troupe.	9 And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.
10 Lorsque tu t'approcheras d'une ville pour la combattre, tu lui proposeras la paix.	10 When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.
11 Si elle l'accepte et t'ouvre ses portes, tout le peuple qui s'y trouve te devra la corvée et letravail.	11 And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.
12 Mais si elle refuse la paix et te livre combat, tu l'assiégeras.	12 And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:
13 Yahvé ton Dieu la livrera en ton pouvoir, et tu en passeras tous les mâles au fil de l'épée.	13 And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:
14 Toutefois les femmes, les enfants, le bétail, tout ce qui se trouve dans la ville, toutes sesdépouilles, tu les prendras comme butin. Tu mangeras les dépouilles de tes ennemis que Yahvé ton Dieu t'auralivrés.	14 But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.
15 C'est ainsi que tu traiteras les villes très éloignées de toi, qui n'appartiennent pas à cesnations-ci.	15 Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations.
16 Quant aux villes de ces peuples que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne en héritage, tu n'en laisserasrien subsister de vivant.	16 But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:
17 Oui, tu les dévoueras à l'anathème, ces Hittites, ces Amorites, ces Cananéens, cesPerizzites, ces Hivvites, ces Jébuséens, ainsi que te l'a commandé Yahvé ton Dieu,	17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee:
18 afin qu'ils ne vous apprennent pas à pratiquer toutes ces abominations qu'ils pratiquentenvers leurs dieux: vous pécheriez contre Yahvé votre Dieu!	18 That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God.
19 Si, en attaquant une ville, tu dois l'assiéger longtemps pour la prendre, tu ne mutileras passes arbres en y portant la hache; tu t'en nourriras sans les abattre. Est-il homme, l'arbre des champs, pour que tule traites en assiégé?	19 When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man's life) to employ them in the siege:
20 Cependant, les arbres que tu sais n'être pas des arbres fruitiers, tu pourras les mutiler, lesabattre, et en faire des ouvrages de siège contre cette ville en guerre contre toi, jusqu'à ce qu'elle succombe.	20 Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.
