Siracide 48

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Alors le prophète Elie se leva comme un feu, sa parole brûlait comme une torche.	1 Then the prophet Elijah arose like a fire, his word flaring like a torch.
2 C'est lui qui fit venir sur eux la famine et qui, dans son zèle, les décima.	2 It was he who brought famine on them and decimated them in his zeal.
3 Par la parole du Seigneur il ferma le ciel, il fit aussi trois fois descendre le feu.	3 By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens, three times also he brought down fire.
4 Comme tu étais glorieux, Elie, dans tes prodiges! qui peut dans son orgueil se faire ton égal?	4 How glorious you were in your miracles, Elijah! Has anyone reason to boast as you have? -
5 Toi qui as arraché un homme à la mort et au shéol, par la parole du Très-Haut.	5 rousing a corpse from death, from Sheol, by the word of the Most High;
6 Toi qui as mené des rois à la ruine, précipité des hommes glorieux de leur couche,	6 dragging kings down to destruction, and high dignitaries from their beds;
7 qui entendis au Sinaï un reproche, à l'Horeb des décrets de vengeance,	7 hearing a rebuke on Sinai and decrees of punishment on Horeb;
8 qui oignis des rois comme vengeurs, des prophètes pour te succéder,	8 anointing kings as avengers, and prophets to succeed you;
9 qui fus emporté dans un tourbillon de feu, par un char aux chevaux de feu,	9 taken up in the whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses;
10 toi qui fus désigné dans des menaces futures pour apaiser la colère avant qu'elle n'éclate,pour ramener le coeur des pères vers les fils et rétablir les tribus de Jacob.	10 designated in the prophecies of doom to allay God's wrath before the fury breaks, to turn the hearts offathers towards their children, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.
11 Bienheureux ceux qui te verront et ceux qui se sont endormis dans l'amour, car nous aussinous posséderons la vie.	11 Blessed, those who wil see you, and those who have fal en asleep in love; for we too shal certainlyhave life.
12 Tel fut Elie qui fut enveloppé dans un tourbillon. Elisée fut rempli de son esprit; pendant savie aucun chef ne put l'ébranler, personne ne put le subjuguer.	12 Such was Elijah, who was enveloped in a whirlwind; and Elisha was fil ed with his spirit; throughout hislife no ruler could shake him, and no one could subdue him.
13 Rien n'était trop grand pour lui et jusque dans la mort son corps prophétisa.	13 No task was too hard for him, and even in death his body prophesied.
14 Pendant sa vie il fit des prodiges et dans sa mort ses oeuvres furent merveilleuses.	14 In his lifetime he performed wonders, and in death his works were marvel ous.
15 Malgré tout, le peuple ne se convertit pas, ne renonça pas à ses péchés, jusqu'à ce qu'il fûtdéporté loin de son pays et dispersé sur toute la terre;	15 Despite al this the people did not repent, nor did they give up their sins, until they were herded out oftheir country and scattered al over the earth;
16 il ne resta que le peuple le moins nombreux et un chef de la maison de David. Quelques-uns d'entre eux firent le bien, d'autres multiplièrent les fautes.	16 only a few of the people were left, with a ruler of the House of David. Some of them did what pleasedthe Lord, others piled sin on sin.
17 Ezéchias fortifia sa ville et fit venir l'eau dans ses murs, avec le fer il fora le rocher etconstruisit des citernes.	17 Hezekiah fortified his city, and laid on a water-supply inside it; with iron he tunnelled through the rockand constructed storage-tanks.
18 De son temps Sennachérib se mit en campagne et envoya Rabsakès, il leva la main contreSion, dans l'insolence de son orgueil.	18 In his days Sennacherib invaded and sent Rabshakeh; he lifted his hand against Zion, and boastedloudly in his arrogance.
19 Alors leur coeur et leurs mains tremblèrent, ils souffrirent les douleurs de femmes entravail,	19 Then their hearts and hands trembled, they felt the pangs of a woman in labour,
20 ils firent appel au Seigneur miséricordieux, tendant les mains vers lui. Du ciel, le Saint sehâta de les écouter et les délivra par la main d'Isaïe,	20 but they cal ed on the merciful Lord, stretching out their hands towards him. Swiftly the Holy Oneheard them from heaven and delivered them by the agency of Isaiah;
21 il frappa le camp des Assyriens et son Ange les extermina.	21 he struck the camp of the Assyrians and his Angel annihilated them.
22 Car Ezéchias fit ce qui plaît au Seigneur et se montra fort en suivant David son père,comme le lui ordonna le prophète Isaïe, le grand, le fidèle dans ses visions.	22 For Hezekiah did what is pleasing to the Lord, and was steadfast in the ways of David his father,enjoined on him by the prophet Isaiah, a great man trustworthy in his vision.
23 De son temps le soleil recula; il prolongea la vie du roi.	23 In his days the sun moved back; he prolonged the life of the king.
24 Dans la puissance de l'esprit il vit la fin des temps, il consola les affligés de Sion,	24 In the power of the spirit he saw the last things, he comforted the mourners of Zion,
25 il révéla l'avenir jusqu'à l'éternité et les choses cachées avant qu'elles n'advinssent.	25 he revealed the future to the end of time, and hidden things long before they happened.
