DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
And Jesus passing by, saw a man, who was blind from his birth:1 As he went along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.
And his disciples asked him: Rabbi, who hath sinned, this man, or his parents, that he should be born blind?2 His disciples asked him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should have been bornblind?'
Jesus answered: Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents; but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.3 'Neither he nor his parents sinned,' Jesus answered, 'he was born blind so that the works of God mightbe revealed in him.
I must work the works of him that sent me, whilst it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.4 'As long as day lasts we must carry out the work of the one who sent me; the night wil soon be herewhen no one can work.
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.5 As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world.'
When he had said these things, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and spread the clay on his eyes,6 Having said this, he spat on the ground, made a paste with the spittle, put this over the eyes of the blindman,
And said to him: Go, wash in the pool of Siloe, which is interpreted, Sent. He went therefore, and washed, and he came seeing.7 and said to him, 'Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam' (the name means 'one who has been sent'). So hewent off and washed and came back able to see.
The neighbours therefore, and they who had seen him before that he was a beggar, said: Is not this he that sat and begged? Some said: This is he.8 His neighbours and the people who used to see him before (for he was a beggar) said, 'Isn't this theman who used to sit and beg?'
But others said: No, but he is like him. But he said: I am he.9 Some said, 'Yes, it is the same one.' Others said, 'No, but he looks just like him.' The man himself said,'Yes, I am the one.'
They said therefore to him: How were thy eyes opened?10 So they said to him, 'Then how is it that your eyes were opened?'
He answered: That man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said to me: Go to the pool of Siloe, and wash. And I went, I washed, and I see.11 He answered, 'The man cal ed Jesus made a paste, daubed my eyes with it and said to me, "Go offand wash at Siloam"; so I went, and when I washed I gained my sight.'
And they said to him: Where is he? He saith: I know not.12 They asked, 'Where is he?' He answered, 'I don't know.'
They bring him that had been blind to the Pharisees.13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
Now it was the sabbath, when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.14 It had been a Sabbath day when Jesus made the paste and opened the man's eyes,
Again therefore the Pharisees asked him, how he had received his sight. But he said to them: He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and I see.15 so when the Pharisees asked him how he had gained his sight, he said, 'He put a paste on my eyes, and I washed, and I can see.'
Some therefore of the Pharisees said: This man is not of God, who keepeth not the sabbath. But others said: How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.16 Then some of the Pharisees said, 'That man cannot be from God: he does not keep the Sabbath.'Others said, 'How can a sinner produce signs like this?' And there was division among them.
They say therefore to the blind man again: What sayest thou of him that hath opened they eyes? And he said: He is a prophet.17 So they spoke to the blind man again, 'What have you to say about him yourself, now that he hasopened your eyes?' The man answered, 'He is a prophet.'
The Jews then did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight,18 However, the Jews would not believe that the man had been blind without first sending for the parentsof the man who had gained his sight and
And asked them, saying: Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then doth he now see?19 asking them, 'Is this man really the son of yours who you say was born blind? If so, how is it that he isnow able to see?'
His parents answered them, and said: We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:20 His parents answered, 'We know he is our son and we know he was born blind,
But how he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: ask himself: he is of age, let him speak for himself.21 but how he can see, we don't know, nor who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is old enough: let himspeak for himself.'
These things his parents said, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had already agreed among themselves, that if any man should confess him to be Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.22 His parents spoke like this out of fear of the Jews, who had already agreed to ban from the synagogueanyone who should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ.
Therefore did his parents say: He is of age, ask himself.23 This was why his parents said, 'He is old enough; ask him.'
They therefore called the man again that had been blind, and said to him: Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.24 So the Jews sent for the man again and said to him, 'Give glory to God! We are satisfied that this manis a sinner.'
He said therefore to them: If he be a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see.25 The man answered, 'Whether he is a sinner I don't know; al I know is that I was blind and now I cansee.'
They said then to him: What did he to thee? How did he open thy eyes?26 They said to him, 'What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?'
He answered them: I have told you already, and you have heard: why would you hear it again? will you also become his disciples?27 He replied, 'I have told you once and you wouldn't listen. Why do you want to hear it all again? Do youwant to become his disciples yourselves?'
They reviled him therefore, and said: Be thou his disciple; but we are the disciples of Moses.28 At this they hurled abuse at him, 'It is you who are his disciple, we are disciples of Moses:
We know that God spoke to Moses: but as to this man, we know not from whence he is.29 we know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this man, we don't know where he comes from.'
The man answered, and said to them: Why, herein is a wonderful thing, that you know not from whence he is, and he hath opened my eyes.30 The man replied, 'That is just what is so amazing! You don't know where he comes from and he hasopened my eyes!
Now we know that God doth not hear sinners: but if a man be a server of God, and doth his will, him he heareth.31 We know that God doesn't listen to sinners, but God does listen to people who are devout and do hiswil .
From the beginning of the world it hath not been heard, that any man hath opened the eyes of one born blind.32 Ever since the world began it is unheard of for anyone to open the eyes of someone born blind;
Unless this man were of God, he could not do any thing.33 if this man were not from God, he wouldn't have been able to do anything.'
They answered, and said to him: Thou wast wholly born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.34 They retorted, 'Are you trying to teach us, and you a sinner through and through ever since you wereborn!' And they ejected him.
Jesus heard that they had cast him out: and when he had found him, he said to him: Dost thou believe in the Son of God?35 Jesus heard they had ejected him, and when he found him he said to him, 'Do you believe in the Sonof man?'
He answered, and said: Who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him?36 'Sir,' the man replied, 'tel me who he is so that I may believe in him.'
And Jesus said to him: Thou hast both seen him; and it is he that talketh with thee.37 Jesus said, 'You have seen him; he is speaking to you.'
And he said: I believe, Lord. And falling down, he adored him.38 The man said, 'Lord, I believe,' and worshipped him.
And Jesus said: For judgment I am come into this world; that they who see not, may see; and they who see, may become blind.39 Jesus said: It is for judgement that I have come into this world, so that those without sight may see andthose with sight may become blind.
And some of the Pharisees, who were with him, heard: and they said unto him: Are we also blind?40 Hearing this, some Pharisees who were present said to him, 'So we are blind, are we?'
Jesus said to them: If you were blind, you should not have sin: but now you say: We see. Your sin remaineth.41 Jesus replied: If you were blind, you would not be guilty, but since you say, 'We can see,' your guiltremains.
