| 9 e disse al suo popolo: "Ecco, il popolo dei figli d'Israele è più grande e più forte di noi: | 9 And he said to his people, "Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. |
| 10 su, comportiamoci saggiamente con lui, perché non si moltiplichi; e se ci sarà una guerra non si aggiunga anch'esso a chi ci odia e combatta contro di noi e poi se ne vada dal paese". | 10 Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war befall us, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land." |
| 11 Gl'imposero perciò dei sovrintendenti ai lavori forzati per opprimerlo con i loro pesi, e costruì città-magazzino per il faraone: Pitom e Ramses. | 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens; and they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Ra-amses. |
| 12 Ma più lo opprimevano, più si moltiplicava e straripava: ed ebbero paura dei figli di Israele. | 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. |
| 13 Allora l'Egitto sottopose i figli d'Israele a un lavoro massacrante: | 13 So they made the people of Israel serve with rigor, |
| 14 amareggiarono la loro vita con un duro lavoro, con l'argilla e i mattoni, con ogni genere di lavoro nei campi: ogni specie di lavoro massacrante con cui li fecero lavorare. | 14 and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field; in all their work they made them serve with rigor. |

| 16 "Quando farete partorire le donne ebree, mirate al sedile per il parto: se è un figlio, uccidetelo; se è una figlia, lasciatela in vita". | 16 "When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, she shall live." |
| 17 Ma le levatrici ebbero timor di Dio e non fecero come aveva detto loro il re d'Egitto, e lasciarono in vita i figli. | 17 But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. |
| 18 Il re d'Egitto chiamò allora le levatrici e disse loro: "Perché avete fatto questo e avete lasciato in vita i figli?". | 18 So the king of Egypt called the midwives, and said to them, "Why have you done this, and let the male children live?" |
| 19 Le levatrici dissero al faraone: "Perché le donne ebree non sono come le egiziane: sono piene di vita. Prima che arrivino da loro le levatrici hanno già partorito". | 19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and are delivered before the midwife comes to them." |
| 20 Dio fece del bene alle levatrici, mentre il popolo si moltiplicò e diventò molto forte. | 20 So God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied and grew very strong. |
| 21 E poiché le levatrici avevano temuto Dio, egli fece loro avere una famiglia. | 21 And because the midwives feared God he gave them families. |
| 22 Ma il faraone ordinò così a tutto il suo popolo: "Ogni figlio che nascerà, gettatelo nel fiume: lasciate vivere invece le figlie". | 22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, "Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live." |
