1 Questi sono i nomi dei figli d'Israele che entrarono in Egitto con Giacobbe, ognuno con la propria famiglia:	1 These are the names of the sons of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob. They entered, each one with his house:
2 Ruben, Simeone, Levi, Giuda,	2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
3 Issacar, Zàbulon, Beniamino,	3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4 Dan, Nèftali, Gad e Aser.	4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 La somma di tutti coloro che erano stati generati da Giacobbe era di settanta. Giuseppe era già in Egitto.	5 Therefore, all the souls of those who went forth from Jacob’s thigh were seventy. Now Joseph was in Egypt.
6 Giuseppe morì, con tutti i suoi fratelli e tutta quella generazione.	6 When he had died, along with all of his brothers and all of that generation,
7 I figli d'Israele prolificarono e pullularono, si moltiplicarono e divennero molto, molto forti, tanto che il paese si riempì di loro.	7 the sons of Israel increased, and they multiplied like seedlings. And having been strengthened exceedingly, they filled the land.
8 Ma sorse sull'Egitto un nuovo re che non aveva conosciuto Giuseppe,	8 Meanwhile, there arose a new king over Egypt, who was ignorant of Joseph.
9 e disse al suo popolo: "Ecco, il popolo dei figli d'Israele è più grande e più forte di noi:	9 And he said to his people: “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are many, and they are stronger than we are.
10 su, comportiamoci saggiamente con lui, perché non si moltiplichi; e se ci sarà una guerra non si aggiunga anch'esso a chi ci odia e combatta contro di noi e poi se ne vada dal paese".	10 Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply; and if any war should advance against us, they may be added to our enemies, and having fought against us, they might depart from the land.”
11 Gl'imposero perciò dei sovrintendenti ai lavori forzati per opprimerlo con i loro pesi, e costruì città-magazzino per il faraone: Pitom e Ramses.	11 And so he set over them masters of the works, in order to afflict them with burdens. And they built for Pharaoh the cities of the tabernacles: Pithom and Raamses.
12 Ma più lo opprimevano, più si moltiplicava e straripava: ed ebbero paura dei figli di Israele.	12 And the more they oppressed them, so much more did they multiply and increase.
13 Allora l'Egitto sottopose i figli d'Israele a un lavoro massacrante:	13 And the Egyptians hated the sons of Israel, and they afflicted them and mocked them.
14 amareggiarono la loro vita con un duro lavoro, con l'argilla e i mattoni, con ogni genere di lavoro nei campi: ogni specie di lavoro massacrante con cui li fecero lavorare.	14 And they led their life directly into bitterness, with hard work in clay and brick, and with all kinds of servitude, so that they were being overwhelmed with the works of the land.
15 Il re d'Egitto disse alle levatrici ebree, delle quali una si chiamava Sifra e la seconda Pua:	15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, (one of whom one was called Shiphrah, another Puah)
16 "Quando farete partorire le donne ebree, mirate al sedile per il parto: se è un figlio, uccidetelo; se è una figlia, lasciatela in vita".	16 instructing them: “When you will act as a midwife to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery has arrived: if it is male, put it to death; if it is female, retain it.”
17 Ma le levatrici ebbero timor di Dio e non fecero come aveva detto loro il re d'Egitto, e lasciarono in vita i figli.	17 But the midwives feared God, and so they did not act according to the precept of the king of Egypt, but they kept the males safe.
18 Il re d'Egitto chiamò allora le levatrici e disse loro: "Perché avete fatto questo e avete lasciato in vita i figli?".	18 And summoning them, the king said, “What did you intend to do, so that you would save the boys?”
19 Le levatrici dissero al faraone: "Perché le donne ebree non sono come le egiziane: sono piene di vita. Prima che arrivino da loro le levatrici hanno già partorito".	19 They responded: “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. For they themselves have the wisdom of a midwife, and so they give birth before we can come to them.”
20 Dio fece del bene alle levatrici, mentre il popolo si moltiplicò e diventò molto forte.	20 Therefore, God acted favorably toward the midwives. And the people increased, and they were strengthened exceedingly.
21 E poiché le levatrici avevano temuto Dio, egli fece loro avere una famiglia.	21 And because the midwives feared God, he built houses for them.
22 Ma il faraone ordinò così a tutto il suo popolo: "Ogni figlio che nascerà, gettatelo nel fiume: lasciate vivere invece le figlie".	22 Therefore, Pharaoh instructed all his people, saying: “Whatever will be born of the male sex, cast it into the river; whatever will be born of the female sex, retain it.”
