LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Questi sono i nomi dei figli d'Israele che entrarono in Egitto con Giacobbe, ognuno con la propria famiglia:	1 These are the names of the Israelites who went with Jacob to Egypt, each of them went with his family:
2 Ruben, Simeone, Levi, Giuda,	2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah,
3 Issacar, Zàbulon, Beniamino,	3 Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin,
4 Dan, Nèftali, Gad e Aser.	4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 La somma di tutti coloro che erano stati generati da Giacobbe era di settanta. Giuseppe era già in Egitto.	5 In all, the descendants of Jacob numbered seventy persons. Joseph was in Egypt already.
6 Giuseppe morì, con tutti i suoi fratelli e tutta quella generazione.	6 Then Joseph died, and his brothers, and all that generation.
7 I figli d'Israele prolificarono e pullularono, si moltiplicarono e divennero molto, molto forti, tanto che il paese si riempì di loro.	7 But the Israelites were fruitful and prolific; they became so numerous and powerful that eventually thewhole land was ful of them.
8 Ma sorse sull'Egitto un nuovo re che non aveva conosciuto Giuseppe,	8 Then there came to power in Egypt a new king who had never heard of Joseph.
9 e disse al suo popolo: "Ecco, il popolo dei figli d'Israele è più grande e più forte di noi:	9 'Look,' he said to his people, 'the Israelites are now more numerous and stronger than we are.
10 su, comportiamoci saggiamente con lui, perché non si moltiplichi; e se ci sarà una guerra non si aggiunga anch'esso a chi ci odia e combatta contro di noi e poi se ne vada dal paese".	10 We must take precautions to stop them from increasing any further, or if war should break out, theymight join the ranks of our enemies. They might take arms against us and then escape from the country.'
11 Gl'imposero perciò dei sovrintendenti ai lavori forzati per opprimerlo con i loro pesi, e costruì città-magazzino per il faraone: Pitom e Ramses.	11 Accordingly they put taskmasters over the Israelites to wear them down by forced labour. In this waythey built the store-cities of Pithom and Rameses for Pharaoh.
12 Ma più lo opprimevano, più si moltiplicava e straripava: ed ebbero paura dei figli di Israele.	12 But the harder their lives were made, the more they increased and spread, until people came to fearthe Israelites.
13 Allora l'Egitto sottopose i figli d'Israele a un lavoro massacrante:	13 So the Egyptians gave them no mercy in the demands they made,
14 amareggiarono la loro vita con un duro lavoro, con l'argilla e i mattoni, con ogni genere di lavoro nei campi: ogni specie di lavoro massacrante con cui li fecero lavorare.	14 making their lives miserable with hard labour: with digging clay, making bricks, doing various kinds offield -- work -- al sorts of labour that they imposed on them without mercy.
15 Il re d'Egitto disse alle levatrici ebree, delle quali una si chiamava Sifra e la seconda Pua:	15 The king of Egypt then spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was cal ed Shiphrah, and theother Puah.
16 "Quando farete partorire le donne ebree, mirate al sedile per il parto: se è un figlio, uccidetelo; se è una figlia, lasciatela in vita".	16 'When you attend Hebrew women in childbirth,' he said, 'look at the two stones. If it is a boy, kil him; ifa girl, let her live.'
17 Ma le levatrici ebbero timor di Dio e non fecero come aveva detto loro il re d'Egitto, e lasciarono in vita i figli.	17 But the midwives were God-fearing women and did not obey the orders of the king of Egypt, butal owed the boys to live.
18 Il re d'Egitto chiamò allora le levatrici e disse loro: "Perché avete fatto questo e avete lasciato in vita i figli?".	18 So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, 'What do you mean by al owing theboys to live?'
19 Le levatrici dissero al faraone: "Perché le donne ebree non sono come le egiziane: sono piene di vita. Prima che arrivino da loro le levatrici hanno già partorito".	19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, 'Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women, they are hardy and givebirth before the midwife can get to them.'
20 Dio fece del bene alle levatrici, mentre il popolo si moltiplicò e diventò molto forte.	20 For this, God was good to the midwives, and the people went on increasing and growing morepowerful;
21 E poiché le levatrici avevano temuto Dio, egli fece loro avere una famiglia.	21 and since the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.
22 Ma il faraone ordinò così a tutto il suo popolo: "Ogni figlio che nascerà, gettatelo nel fiume: lasciate vivere invece le figlie".	22 Pharaoh then gave all his people this command: 'Throw every new-born boy into the river, but let allthe girls live.'
