BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Ma Giobbe rispose e disse:	1 Job spoke next. He said:
2 «Veramente io so che è così, e che l'uomo non può giustificarsi in confronto con Dio;	2 Indeed, I know it is as you say: how could anyone claim to be upright before God?
3 se egli volesse contender con lui, non potrebbe rispondergli una volta su mille.	3 Anyone trying to argue matters with him, could not give him one answer in a thousand.
4 Sapiente di cuore e gagliardo di forza, chi mai resistè contro lui e rimase tranquillo?	4 Among the wisest and the hardiest, who then can successful y defy him?
5 Sposta egli i monti e non se n'avvedono, e li sconvolge nel furore suo:	5 He moves the mountains, though they do not know it; he throws them down when he is angry.
6 fa traballar la terra dal suo sito, e le colonne di lei ne sono scosse:	6 He shakes the earth, and moves it from its place, making al its pil ars tremble.
7 dà un comando al sole ed esso non spunta, e tien racchiuse le stelle quasi sotto un suggello:	7 The sun, at his command, forbears to rise, and on the stars he sets a seal.
8 i cieli egli stende da solo, incede sopra i flutti del mare:	8 He and no other has stretched out the heavens and trampled on the back of the Sea.
9 egli ha creato Arturo ed Orionele Pleiadi e le Costellazioni dell'Austro:	9 He has made the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the Mansions of the South.
10 opera egli cose grandi ed incomprensibili, cose mirabili che non hanno numero.	10 The works he does are great and unfathomable, and his marvels cannot be counted.
11 Se egli a me viene, io non lo scorgo, se s'allontana, io non me ne avvedo;	11 If he passes me, I do not see him; he slips by, imperceptible to me.

13 Dio, alla cui ira nessuno può resistere, e sotto cui si curvano coloro che sostengono l'orbe,	13 God does not renounce his anger: beneath him, Rahab's minions stil lie prostrate.
14 a costui, che grandezza ho io perchè possa rispondergli, e pronunciar le mie parole avanti a lui?	14 And here am I, proposing to defend myself and select my arguments against him!

16 E pur se mi rispondesse quand'io lo chiamassi [a giudizio], non avrei fiducia che ascolterebbe la mia voce:	16 And if he deigned to answer my citation, I cannot believe he would listen to what I said,
17 egli invero nella procella mi sfracellerebbe, moltiplicherebbe le mie ferite pur senza ragione.	17 he who crushes me for one hair, who, for no reason, wounds and wounds again,
18 Egli non concede al mio spirito di riposarsi, e mi riempie d'amarezze.	18 not even letting me regain my breath, with so much bitterness he fills me!

20 Se mi vorrò giustificare, la mia stessa bocca mi condannerà, se mostrarmi innocente, mi convincerà perverso.	20 If I prove myself upright, his mouth may condemn me, even if I am innocent, he may pronounce meperverse.
21 Quand'anche io sia perfetto, ciò stesso l'anima mia l'ignorerà, e avrò a disdegno la mia vita.	21 But am I innocent? I am no longer sure, and life itself I despise!
22 Questo solo è ciò ch'io ho detto:Sia l'innocente che l'empio è Lui che li distrugge.	22 It is al one, and hence I boldly say: he destroys innocent and guilty alike.
23 Se egli flagella, dia la morte all'istante, e delle pene degli innocenti non s'allieti.	23 When a sudden deadly scourge descends, he laughs at the plight of the innocent.
24 La terra è consegnata in mano al malvagio, il volto dei giudici d'essa egli benda; se non è Lui [che fa ciò], chi è dunque?	24 When a country falls into the power of the wicked, he veils the faces of its judges. Or if not he, whoelse?
25 E i miei dì furon veloci più che un corriere, fuggiron via e non videro il bene;	25 My days pass: more swiftly than a runner they flee away with never a glimpse of happiness,
26 trascorsero oltre come vascelli di canna, come l'aquila che piomba sulla preda!	26 they skim past like a reed canoe, like an eagle swooping on its prey.
27 Se io esclamo: - Non voglio parlar più così! -mi stravolge il viso e mi strazia il dolore.	27 If I decide to stifle my complaining, change countenance, and wear a smiling face,
28 Io temevo di tutte le mie azioni, sapendo che tu non perdoni a chi manca;	28 fear seizes me at the thought of al my woes, for I know you do not regard me as innocent.
29 chè se pur in tal modo io risulto empio, perchè dovrei travagliarmi senza vantaggio?	29 And if I have done wrong, why should I put myself to useless trouble?
30 Se io mi lavassi con acqua di neve, e le mie mani risplendessero per mondezza,	30 If I wash myself in melted snow, clean my hands with soda,
31 nella lordura tu m'intingeresti, sì che m'avessero a schifo i miei stessi abiti.	31 you wil only plunge me into the dung, til my clothes themselves recoil from me!
32 Egli invero non è un uomo al pari di me, perchè io gli risponda, nè è tale che in giudizio come me possa ascoltarsi;	32 For he is not human like me: impossible for me to answer him or appear alongside him in court.
33 non c'è chi possa far da arbitro fra me e lui, e stender la mano su ambedue.	33 There is no arbiter between us, to lay his hand on both,
34 Ritiri egli da sopra a me il suo flagello, e il suo timore non mi sbigottisca:	34 to stay his rod from me, or keep away his daunting terrors.
35 [a tal condizione] parlerei, senza temerlo, poichè intimorito io non posso rispondere.	35 Nonetheless, unafraid of him, I shal speak: since I do not see myself like that at al !
