NEW AMERICAN BIBLE | NOVA VULGATA |
---|---|
My son, keep my words, and treasure my commands. | 1 Fili mi, custodi sermones meos et praecepta mea reconde tibi. |
Keep my commands and live, my teaching as the apple of your eye; | 2 Serva mandata mea et vives, et legem meam quasi pupillam oculi tui. |
Bind them on your fingers, write them on the tablet of your heart. | 3 Liga ea in digitis tuis, scribe illa in tabulis cordis tui. |
Say to Wisdom, "You are my sister!" call Understanding, "Friend!" | 4 Dic sapientiae: “ Soror mea es ” et prudentiam voca Amicam, |
That they may keep you from another's wife, from the adulteress with her smooth words. | 5 ut custodiat te a muliere extranea et ab aliena, quae verba sua dulcia facit. |
For at the window of my house, through my lattice I looked out-- | 6 De fenestra enim domus meae per cancellos prospexi |
And I saw among the simple ones, I observed among the young men, a youth with no sense, | 7 et video inter parvulos; considero inter filios vecordem iuvenem, |
Going along the street near the corner, then walking in the direction of her house-- | 8 qui transit per plateam iuxta angulum et prope viam domus illius graditur |
In the twilight, at dusk of day, at the time of the dark of night. | 9 in obscuro advesperascente die, in mediis tenebris et caligine. |
And lo! the woman comes to meet him, robed like a harlot, with secret designs-- | 10 Et ecce, occurrit illi mulier ornatu meretricio, cauta corde, garrula et rebellans, |
She is fickle and unruly, in her home her feet cannot rest; | 11 quietis impatiens nec valens in domo consistere pedibus suis: |
Now she is in the streets, now in the open squares, and at every corner she lurks in ambush-- | 12 nunc foris, nunc in plateis et iuxta angulos insidians. |
When she seizes him, she kisses him, and with an impudent look says to him: | 13 Apprehensumque deosculatur iuvenem et procaci vultu blanditur dicens: |
"I owed peace offerings, and today I have fulfilled my vows; | 14 “ Victimas pro salute vovi, hodie reddidi vota mea; |
So I came out to meet you, to look for you, and I have found you! | 15 idcirco egressa sum in occursum tuum desiderans te videre et repperi. |
With coverlets I have spread my couch, with brocaded cloths of Egyptian linen; | 16 Stragulatis vestibus lectulum meum stravi, linteis pictis ex Aegypto; |
I have sprinkled my bed with myrrh, with aloes, and with cinnamon. | 17 aspersi cubile meum myrrha et aloe et cinnamomo. |
"Come, let us drink our fill of love, until morning, let us feast on love! | 18 Veni, inebriemur voluptatibus, usque mane fruamur amoribus. |
For my husband is not at home, he has gone on a long journey; | 19 Non est enim vir in domo sua; abiit via longissima, |
A bag of money he took with him, not till the full moon will he return home." | 20 sacculum pecuniae secum tulit, in die plenae lunae reversurus est in domum suam ”. |
She wins him over by her repeated urging, with her smooth lips she leads him astray; | 21 Irretivit eum multis sermonibus et blanditiis labiorum protraxit illum. |
He follows her stupidly, like an ox that is led to slaughter; Like a stag that minces toward the net, | 22 Stultus eam sequitur quasi bos ductus ad victimam, sicut irretitur vinculo cervus, |
till an arrow pierces its liver; Like a bird that rushes into a snare, unaware that its life is at stake. | 23 donec transfigat sagitta iecur eius; velut si avis festinet ad laqueum et nescit quod de periculo animae illius agitur. |
So now, O children, listen to me, be attentive to the words of my mouth! | 24 Nunc ergo, fili mi, audi me et attende verbis oris mei. |
Let not your heart turn to her ways, go not astray in her paths; | 25 Ne abstrahatur in viis illius mens tua, neque decipiaris semitis eius. |
For many are those she has struck down dead, numerous, those she has slain. | 26 Multos enim vulneratos deiecit, et fortissimi quique interfecti sunt ab ea: |
Her house is made up of ways to the nether world, leading down into the chambers of death. | 27 viae inferi domus eius penetrantes in interiora mortis. |
