1 In quello medesimo tempo chiamò Iosuè i figliuoli di Ruben e di Gad e la metà della schiatta di Manasse.	1 Joshua then summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh
2 E disse loro: voi avete fatto ogni cosa che vi comandò Moisè servo di Dio; e ancora a me avete obbedito in tutte le cose.	2 and said to them, 'You have observed everything that Moses, servant of Yahweh, ordered you, andwhenever I have given you an order you have listened to me.
3 E non avete già lungo tempo abbandonati i vostri fratelli insino al dì d' oggi, servando il comandamento di Dio vostro.	3 You have not deserted your brothers, from long ago until today, keeping the observance of thecommandment of Yahweh your God.
4 E imperciò che Dio nostro Signore ha dato pace e riposo a' vostri fratelli, sì come promise; andate e tornate ne' vostri tabernacoli e abitazioni, e nella terra della vostra possessione, la quale vi diede Moisè servo di Dio di là dal (fiume) Giordano;	4 Now that Yahweh your God has granted your brothers the rest that he promised them, go back to yourtents, to the country belonging to you which Moses, servant of Yahweh, gave you on the other side of theJordan.
5 ma a questi patti: cioè che voi serviate diligentemente e compiate coll' opera il comandamento e la legge di Dio, la quale ne comandò Moisè servo di Dio, e che voi amiate Iddio vostro Signore, e andiate per tutte le sue vie, e serviate i suoi comandamenti, e sì gli vi accostiate, e sì gli serviate con tutto il cuore e con tutta l'anima vostra.	5 But take great care to practise the commandments and the Law which Moses, servant of Yahweh, hasgiven you: to love Yahweh your God, always to follow his paths, to keep his commandments, to be loyal to himand to serve him with al your heart and with al your soul.'
6 E benedissegli Iosuè, e sì gli lasciò andare; i quali tornarono nelli loro tabernacoli (e abitazioni).	6 Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went home to their tents.
7 Ma alla metà della schiatta di Manasse avea data Moisè la possessione in Basan; e imperciò all'altra metà, che soperchiò, diede Iosuè la sorte tra i loro fratelli di là dal (fiume) Giordano dalla parte dell' occidente. E lasciandoli andare alli loro tabernacoli (e le loro abitazioni), sì gli benedisse.	7 To one half of the tribe of Manasseh, Moses had given a territory in Bashan; to the other half, Joshuagave another among their brothers on the west bank of the Jordan. As Joshua sent them home to their tents, heblessed them
8 E disse loro: con molta sostanza e ricchezza ritornate alle vostre case, con argento, oro e metallo, e ferro e molte vestimenta; onde dividete la preda, la quale avete avuta da' vostri nemici, con li vostri fratelli.	8 and said to them, 'You are going back to your tents with great wealth, with a great deal of livestock,with silver and gold, bronze and iron and great quantities of clothing; share the spoils of your enemies with yourbrothers.'
9 E ritornarono e andàrsene i figliuoli di Ruben e li figliuoli di Gad e i figliuoli della mezza schiatta di Manasse, dagli altri figliuoli d' Israel di Silo, la quale sì è posta (ed edificata) in Canaan, acciò che entrassero in Galaad, nella terra della loro possessione, la quale aveano avuta secondo il comandamento di Dio, il quale fece in mano di Moisè.	9 The Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home, leaving the Israelites atShiloh in Canaan, and made for Gilead, the territory which belonged to them as a result of Yahweh's order giventhrough Moses.
10 E vegnendo a' monticelli del (fiume) Giordano nella terra di Canaan, edificàrno a lato del (fiume) Giordano uno altare d'infinita (altezza e) grandezza.	10 When they came to the stone circle by the Jordan, in Canaanite territory, the Reubenites, the Gaditesand the half-tribe of Manasseh built an altar there beside the Jordan, a large, imposing altar.
11 La quale cosa udendo gli altri figliuoli d' Israel, e fosse loro da veri messaggi notificato, che aveano edificato i figliuoli (d' Israel, della schiatta) di Ruben e di Gad e della [mezza] schiatta di Manasse, uno altare nella terra di Canaan sopra le ripe del (fiume) Giordano, verso i figliuoli d' Israel;	11 This came to the ears of the Israelites. 'Look,' the word went round, 'the Reubenites, the Gadites andthe half-tribe of Manasseh have built this altar on the Canaanite side, near the stone circle by the Jordan, on theIsraelites' bank.'
12 tutti si raunarono in Silo, acciò che andassono suso, e combattessero contro a loro.	12 At this news, the whole community of the Israelites mustered at Shiloh, to march against them andmake war on them.
13 E in questo mezzo mandarono a loro nella terra di Galaad (e sì dissero loro: questo vi manda a dire tutto il popolo di Dio Signore. E furono gli ambasciadori costoro cioè) Finees figliuolo di Eleazaro (sommo) sacerdote,	13 The Israelites sent the priest Phinehas son of Eleazar to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in Gilead,
14 e dieci principi con lui, ciascuni di ciascune ischiatte.	14 and with him ten leading men, one man from a leading family from each of the tribes of Israel, each ofthem being head of his family in the clans of Israel.
15 I quali si vennero ai figliuoli di Ruben e di Gad in Galaad, ed alla metà della schiatta di Manasse, e dissono:	15 Having reached the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, they said this:
16 Questo vi manda a dire tutto il popolo di Dio: Che trasgressione è questa? Perchè avete voi abbandonato Iddio Signore d' Israel, edificandovi l'altare del sacrilegio, e partendovi dal suo servigio (dell' altare dove dovete lui adorare)?	16 'The whole community of Israel says as fol ows, "What do you mean by this infidelity, which you havecommitted against the God of Israel by now repudiating your al egiance to Yahweh, and by building yourselvesan altar with the intention now of rebel ing against Yahweh?
17 Parvi avere fatto poco, che voi peccaste in Beelfegor? Ed è rimasta insino al dì d' oggi la macchia di quello peccato; e però assai ne furono morti (per quello medesimo peccato).	17 "Was the crime which we committed at Peor so slight -- although we have not managed to purifyourselves from that even now, in spite of the plague which has ravaged the community of Yahweh-
18 E voi oggi avete lasciato Iddio vostro Signore; e domani verrà l'ira sua crudelmente sopra tutto il popolo d' Israel.	18 that you must now repudiate your al egiance to Yahweh? For since you are in rebellion against himtoday, tomorrow his anger will be aroused against the whole community of Israel.
19 Ma se così è che voi crediate che sia immonda la terra della vostra possessione, passate (e venite) nella terra dove è il tabernacolo di Dio, e abitate fra noi, sì che voi non vì partiate dal Signore e dal nostro consorzio, avendo edificato uno altare oltre l'altare del nostro Signore Iddio.	19 "Is the country in which you have settled unclean? Then cross over into the country where Yahwehhas settled, there where Yahweh's Dwel ing now stands, and settle among us. But do not rebel against Yahwehor involve us in your rebel ion by building a rival altar to the altar of Yahweh our God.
20 Or non preterì Acan figliuolo di Zare il comandamento del Signore, e l'ira sua venne sopra tutto Israel? E lui era uno uomo; e fosse stato così, ch' egli solo fosse perito nella sua sceleraggine!	20 When Achan son of Zerah was unfaithful to the curse of destruction, did not the retribution comedown on the whole community of Israel, although he was only one man? Did he not have to die for his crime?" '
21 Respuoseno i figliuoli di Ruben e di Gad e della mezza tribù di Manasse alli principi della legazione d' Israel:	21 The Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh spoke in their turn and answered theheads of the clans of Israel:
22 Signore Iddio fortissimo, elli sa, ed elli insieme l'intende con Israel; se noi con animo di trapassare il comandamento e la legge di Dio edificammo questo altare, non ci guardi, ma puniscaci nel dì d'oggi presente;	22 'The God of gods, Yahweh, the God of gods, Yahweh wel knows, and let Israel know it too: if therehas been rebellion or infidelity to Yahweh on our part, may he refuse to save us today!
23 e se ancora il facemmo con intenzione, acciò che noi facessimo suso offerte di sacrifizio e sacrifizii, esso il cerchi e giùdichilo;	23 And if we have built ourselves an altar with the intention of repudiating our al egiance to Yahweh andof presenting burnt offering and oblation or of offering communion sacrifices on it, may Yahweh himself call us to account for it!
24 e se noi non lo facemmo più tosto, e questo fue il nostro pensiero e il nostro rispetto (e a ciò l' ordinassimo): dimane diranno i figliuoli vostri a' nostri figliuoli: che avete a fare voi (con noi e) con Iddio d'Israel?	24 The truth is, we have done this as a precaution: in the future, your descendants might say to ours,"What connection do you have with Yahweh, God of Israel?
25 Ecco che Iddio ha posto il termine tra noi e voi, figliuoli di Ruben e figliuoli di Gad, il (fiume) Giordano, (non avete a fare nulla con noi); e imperciò non avrete parte nel nostro Iddio. Per questa cagione rimoveranno i vostri figliuoli i nostri del timore (e della riverenza) di Dio. E imperciò pensammo che fosse il meglio;	25 Has not Yahweh set the frontier of the Jordan between us and you, you Reubenites and Gadites?You have no share in Yahweh." Thus, your descendants would be the cause of stopping ours from fearingYahweh.
26 e dicemmo: facciamo noi uno altare, non per sacrifizio, non per offerta (o riverenza) alcuna,	26 'So we said to each other, "Let us build this altar, not for burnt offerings or other sacrifices
27 ma perchè sia testimonio tra noi e voi, e la nostra famiglia e la vostra gente e la vostra generazione, acciò che noi serviamo a Dio, e che di nostra ragione sie di offerire sacrifizio coll' olocausto, e ostie di pace (e solennitade); e non possano dire nè domani nè posdì i vostri figliuoli: voi non avete parte in Dio nostro Signore.	27 but as a witness between us and you and between our descendants after us, attesting that we toohave the right to worship Yahweh, in his presence, with our burnt offerings, our victims and our communionsacrifices. And so, in the future your descendants wil not be able to say to ours: You have no share in Yahweh."
28 E se pure lo vorranno dire, egli risponderanno loro: ecco l'altare di Dio, che fecero i nostri padri, non per offerirvi suso o per farvi sacrifizio, ma per nostro testimonio e vostro.	28 And we furthermore said, "If ever it were to happen that they did say this either to us or to ourdescendants in the future, we should reply: Look at this structure, Yahweh's altar, made by our ancestors not forburnt offerings or other sacrifices but as a witness between us and you."
29 Partisi da noi questo peccato iscelerato, cioè che noi ci partiamo da Dio Signore, e che noi non seguitiamo i suoi vestigii (e la sua volontà, fatto ed) edificato l'altare per fare sacrificio e offerte e solennitadi, fuori che nell' altare di Dio nostro Signore, il quale sì è (fatto ed) edificato dinanzi al suo tabernacolo.	29 Far be it from us to rebel against Yahweh or now to repudiate our allegiance to Yahweh by buildingan altar for burnt offerings or oblations or sacrifices, in rivalry with the altar of Yahweh our God that standsbefore his Dwel ing!'
30 Le quali cose avendo udite Finees prete, e i principi (e ambasciatori) della ambasciata (de' figliuoli) d' Israel i quali erano con lui, furono pacificati; e molto volontieri ricevettero le parole de' figliuoli di Ruben e di Gad e della mezza schiatta di Manasse.	30 When the priest Phinehas, the leaders of the community and the heads of the clans of Israel whowere with him, heard the words spoken by the Gadites, the Reubenites and the Manassehites, they approved ofthem.
31 E disse Finees figliuolo di Eleazaro (sommo) sacerdote a loro: ora cognosciamo che Iddio Signore si è con noi, imperciò che siete innocenti di questo trapassamento, e avete liberati i figliuoli d' Israel della mano (e dell' ira) di Dio.	31 The priest Phinehas son of Eleazar then said to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the Manassehites,'Today, we can see that Yahweh is among us, since you have not been unfaithful to Yahweh in this matter; thismeans that you have spared the Israelites from Yahweh's avenging hand.'
32 E ritornò coi principi (e partissi) da' figliuoli di Ruben e da quelli di Gad (e dalla metà de' figliuoli della schiatta di Manasse) della terra di Galaad dei confini di Canaan; e andàrsene ai figliuoli d'Israel, e sì riportarono quello che aveano detto.	32 The priest Phinehas son of Eleazar and the leaders left the Reubenites and the Gadites and wentback from Gilead to Canaan and the Israelites, to whom they reported the answer.
33 E piacquero le parole a tutti coloro i quali le udirono. E lodarono Iddio i figliuoli d' Israel, e poi non dissero più d'andare contro a loro, e di combattere, e di spegnere la terra della loro possessione.	33 The Israelites were pleased to hear this; the Israelites gave thanks to God and spoke no more ofmarching against them to make war on them and to ravage the country inhabited by the Reubenites and theGadites.
34 E chiamarono i figliuoli di Ruben e quelli di Gad (e quelli della mezza schiatta de' figliuoli di Manasse) questo altare il quale aveano edificato: TESTIMONIO NOSTRO, CHE IDDIO SIGNORE È VERO DIO.	34 The Reubenites and the Gadites cal ed the altar . . . , 'Because', they said, 'it wil be a witnessbetween us that Yahweh is God.'
