1 Avendo dette queste cose, Iesù andò con gli discepoli suoi oltre il fiume di Cedron, dove era uno orto, in lo quale entrò egli e gli suoi discepoli.	1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.
2 E Iuda, che il tradiva, sapeva bene il luogo; imperò che molte volte era stato con Iesù e con gli discepoli suoi.	2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.
3 E Iuda (andò, e) prese la fameglia e gente de' pontefici e de' Farisei, e andò quivi con lanterne e con facelline e arme.	3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4 E sapendo Iesù ogni cosa che dovea venire. sopra di lui, andò a loro incontro, e disse a loro: cui addimandate voi?	4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
5 E loro dissero: Iesù Nazareno. E Iesù disse a loro io sono. E Iuda, che il tradiva, era con loro.	5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
6 E come Iesù ebbe detto a loro: io sono, tornorono indietro, e caddono in terra.	6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
7 E un' altra volta Iesù gli addimandò: cui addimandate voi? E loro dissero: Iesù Nazareno.	7 Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
8 Rispose Iesù: io vi ho detto che io sono; se voi addimandate me, lasciate adunque andare costoro.	8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:
9 Acciò che si adempisse la parola, la quale avea detto: io non ho perduto niuno di quelli che tu mi dèsti.	9 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.
10 Ma Simone Pietro, avendo uno coltello, trasselo fuori, e percosse il servo del pontefice, che avea nome Malco, e taglio'li l' orecchia dritta.	10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
11 Allora disse Iesù a Pietro: poni il coltello tuo nella guaina. Come? non vogli tu che il calice, che mi dà a bevere il Padre mio, ch' io il beva?	11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
12 Allora il tribuno della corte, con cavalieri e famegli de' giudei, presero Iesù, e ligoronlo.	12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,
13 E menoronlo ad Anna, suocero di Caifas. il quale era pontefice in quello anno.	13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
14 Questo era quel Caifas che avea dato per consiglio a giudei, ch' era di bisogno che uno uomo morisse per il popolo.	14 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
15 E Simone Pietro, e l' altro discepolo, seguitavano Iesù, e quello discepolo era conoscente del pontefice; e vennero con Iesù in casa del pontefice.	15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
16 Ma Pietro stava di fuori alla porta. E il discepolo, il quale era conosciuto dal pontefice, andò e pregò la portinara, e pose Pietro dentro.	16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
17 Allora la portinara disse a Pietro: or non se' tu de' discepoli di questo uomo? E Pietro (negò, e) disse: non sono.	17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
18 E gli servi e ministri stavano alle brase del fuoco a scaldarsi, imperò ch' era freddo; e Pietro era con loro, e scaldavasi.	18 And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.
19 Addimandò il pontefice a Iesù de' suoi discepoli e della sua dottrina.	19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.
20 Rispose Iesù (e disse): io palesemente ho parlato al mondo; io ho sempre (ammaestrato e) insegnato e nella sinagoga e nel tempio, dove tutti gli giudei radunavansi; e in occulto non ho mai parlato alcuna cosa.	20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.
21 Adunque perchè mi dimandi tu? Addimanda a coloro, che mi hanno udito, quello che io ho parlato a loro; e loro sanno quello ch' io ho detto.	21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.
22 E dicendo queste parole, uno delli famegli, ch' era quivi, diede a Iesù una guanciata, e disse: e tu rispondi così al pontefice?	22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
23 Rispose a lui Iesù, (e disse): se io ho parlato male, rendi testimonianza del male; ma se io ho detto bene, perchè mi batti tu?	23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
24 In questo Anna fecelo legare, e mandollo a Caifas pontefice.	24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
25 E Simone Pietro si stava (alle brase del fuoco), e scaldavasi. E quelli ch' erano quivi dissero a Pietro: or non sei tu discepolo di costui? E Pietro negò, e disse: non sono.	25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.
26 Allora disse a lui uno de' servi del pontefice, cognato di colui a cui Pietro tagliò l'orecchia: non ti vidi io nell' orto con colui?	26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
27 E Pietro anche negò; c immantinente cantò il gallo.	27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.
28 Allora menorono Iesù a Caifas nel palazzo dove si dànno le sentenze; ma loro non entrorono per non contaminarsi, per potere mangiare la pasca; e questo fu la mattina per tempo.	28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
29 Uscì fuori Pilato, e disse a loro: che accusazione avete voi contra di questo uomo?	29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
30 E loro risposero, e dissero: se egli non fosse malfattore, noi non l'aressimo menato.	30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
31 Disse a loro Pilato : toglietelo voi, e secondo la legge vostra giudicatelo. Dissero gli Iudei: a noi non è lecito di uccidere persona alcuna.	31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
32 E questo avvenne acciò che si adempisse quella parola che [Iesù] avea detto, significando di qual morte era per morire.	32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.
33 Ed entrò ancora Pilato nel palazzo, e chiamò Iesù, e disse a lui: se' tu re de' Iudei?	33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
34 Rispose Iesù, e disse: di' tu questo da te medesimo, o altri ti hanno detto di me?	34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
35 Rispose Pilato e disse: già non sono io Iudeo; la tua gente e' pontefici mi ti hanno tràdito nelle mani: che hai tu fatto?	35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
36 Disse Iesù: il regno mio non è di questo mondo; (imperò che) se fosse di questo mondo, gli servi miei veramente combatterebbono, sì ch' io non sarei stato tradito a' Iudei; il regno mio non è quivi.	36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
37 Disse a lui Pilato: sei tu dunque re? Rispose a lui Iesù (e disse): tu il dici ch' io sono re. In questo sono nato, e.per questo sono venuto nel mondo, per dare testimonianza (nel mondo) della verità; e tutti coloro che sono della verità odono la voce mia.	37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
38 Disse a lui Pilato che cosa è verità? E detto questo, un' altra volta uscì fuori a' Iudei, e disse a loro: io non trovo cagione alcuna in questo uomo (per la quale egli debba morire).	38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
39 (Ma voi sapete ch' ) egli è usanza, ch' io vi lasci uno prigione per la pasca: volete voi ch' io vi lasci il re de' Iudei?	39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
40 E loro gridorono (alta voce), e dissero: non costui, ma sì Barabba. Questo Barabba era ladro.	40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
