1 Ma non dopo molto tempo mandò il re uno uomo antico di Antiochia, il quale constrignesse i Giudei, che si rimovessono dalle leggi di Dio e della patria;	1 But not long after the king sent a certain old man of Antioch, to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers and of God:
2 e che contaminasse anco il tempio il quale era in Ierusalem, e farlo chiamare tempio di Giove Olimpio; e [in] Garizim, secondo ch' erano quelli i quali abitavano nel luogo, di Giove ospitale.	2 And to defile the temple that was in Jerusalem, and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius: and that in Gazarim of Jupiter Hospitalis, according as they were that inhabited the place.
3 Ed era uno pessimo e grave contracorso di mali a tutti.	3 And very bad was this invasion of evils and grievous to all.
4 Però che anco il tempio era pieno di lussuria, e di conviti e mangiari disordinati, e di persone che usavano con meretrici; e le femine s' intromettevano dei vasi sacri più di quello era conveniente, mettendovi dentro cose che non erano lecite.	4 For the temple was full of the riot and revellings of the Gentiles: and of men lying with lewd women. And women thrust themselves of their accord into the holy places, and brought in things that were not lawful.
5 Anco l'altare era pieno di molte cose illecite, le quali erano proibite per la legge.	5 The altar also was filled with unlawful things, which were forbidden by the laws.
6 E non si servava li sabbati, nè li dì solenni (delli padri, ovver) della patria erano servati; e non era alcuno, che confessasse che fusse Giudeo.	6 And neither were the sabbaths kept, nor the solemn days of the fathers observed, neither did any man plainly profess himself to be a Jew.
7 Ed erano menati, con amara necessità, nel dì della natività del re alli sacrificii; e celebrandosi le cose sacre di (dio) Bacco (lo quale è iddio del vino), erano costretti di circuire il tempio di (dio) Bacco, coronati di ellera.	7 But they were led by bitter constraint on the king's birthday to the sacrifices: and when the feast of Bacchus was kept, they wore compelled to go about crowned with ivy in honour of Bacchus.
8 E oltre questo fu fatto uno comandamento nelle prossime città de' Gentili, incitando i Tolomei, che anco per questo medesimo modo facessino contro alli Giudei, [acciò] che sacrificassino;	8 And there went out a decree into the neighbouring cities of the Gentiles, by the suggestion of the Ptolemeans, that they also should act in like manner against the Jews, to oblige them to sacrifice:
9 e quelli che non vogliano transferirsi agl' instituti de' Gentili, uccidessono; ed era una miseria veder queste cose.	9 And whosoever would not conform themselves to the ways of the Gentiles, should be put to death: then was misery to be seen.
10 E furono accusate due donne, che aveano circonciso i suoi figliuoli; le quali, avendo i figliuoli appiccati alle poppe, essendo menate pubblicamente per la città, le precipitarono per le mura.	10 For two women were accused to have circumcised their children: whom, when they had openly led about through the city with the infants hanging at their breasts, they threw down headlong from the walls.
11 Alcuni altri nascosamente nelle spelonche celebravano il sabbato; ed essendo manifestati a Filippo, furono arsi, però che aveano riverenza, per la religione e l'osservanza, di farsi alcuno adiutorio pur con le mani.	11 And others that had met together in caves that were near, and were keeping the sabbath day privately, being discovered by Philip, were burnt with fire, because they made a conscience to help themselves with their hands, by reason of the religious observance of the day.
12 Io veramente priego voi li quali leggerete questo libro, che non vi maravigliate per queste cose avverse, ma reputate (che) queste cose che avvennero, non esser a distruzione della nostra gente, ma a correzione.	12 Now I beseech those that shall read this book, that they be not shocked at these calamities, but that they consider the things that happened, not as being for the destruction, but for the correction of our nation.
13 Però che non permettere che i peccatori molto tempo òperino male, ma sùbito castigarli, indicio di uno grande beneficio.	13 For it is a token of great goodness when sinners are not suffered to go on in their ways for a long time, but are presently punished.
14 Non certo così, come nelle altre nazioni, il Signore aspetta pazientemente, acciò che quando verrà il dì del giudicio li punisca nella moltitudine de' loro peccati.	14 For, not as with other nations (whom the Lord patiently expecteth, that when the day of judgment shall come, he may punish them in the fulness of their sins:)
15 E così anco in noi ordinò, ch' essendo divenuti i nostri peccati nella fine, così anco dopo soprainduca la vendetta.	15 Doth he also deal with us, so as to suffer our sins to come to their height, and then take vengeance on us.
16 Per la qual cosa (certamente) già mai non rimove la sua misericordia da noi; però che correggendo nelle avversità, il suo popolo non abbandona.	16 And therefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us: but though he chastise his people with adversity, he forsaketh them not.
17 E queste poche cose, che noi abbiamo qui interposte, sia ammaestramento di quelli che leggeranno. E ora è tempo di venire alla narrazione.	17 But let this suffice in a few words for a warning to the readers. And now we must come to the narration.
18 Eleazaro adunque, uno delli maggiori scribi, uomo di età provetta e bello di volto, con la bocca aperta gemendo, era isforzato che mangiasse la carne del porco.	18 Eleazar one of the chief of the scribes, a man advanced in years, and of a comely countenance, was pressed to open his mouth to eat swine's flesh.
19 E lui desiderando più tosto la gloriosa morte, che la vita odiosa, volontariamente andava inanzi al supplicio.	19 But he, choosing rather a most glorious death than a hateful life, went forward voluntarily to the torment.
20 E considerando lui a che modo si debba vivendo operare, sostenendo pazientemente, deliberò di non consentire ad alcuna cosa illecita per amore della vita.	20 And considering in what manner he was come to ii;, patiently bearing, he determined not to do any unlawful things for the love of life.
21 Ma coloro i quali erano circostanti, commossi da una iniqua miserazione per cagione della antica amicizia che loro aveano con lui, traendolo da canto lo pregavano secretamente che fussero condutte carni le quali fosse lecito a lui di mangiarle, acciò che simulasse di aver mangiato, sì come il re avea comandato, delle carni del sacrificio,	21 But they that stood by, being moved with wicked pity, for the old friendship they had with the man, taking him aside, desired that flesh might be brought, which it was lawful for him to eat, that he might make as if he had eaten, as the king had commanded of the flesh of the sacrifice:
22 acciò che, finto questo, fusse liberato dalla morte; e (anco) per amore dell' antica sua amicizia. facevano con lui questa umanità.	22 That by so doing he might be delivered from death: and for the sake of their old friendship with the man they did him this courtesy.
23 Ma lui cominciò a pensare la degna e prestante sua antichità, e la canizie della sua strenua nobilità, ed esser stato da fanciullo in su di ottima conversazione, e sempre esser vivuto secondo la osservanza della legge instituita da Dio; rispose sùbito dicendo voler anteponer più tosto esser nell' inferno.	23 But he began to consider the dignity of his age, and his ancient years, and the inbred honour of his grey head, and his good life and conversation from a child: and he answered without delay, according to the ordinances of the holy law made by God, saying, that he would rather be sent into the other world.
24 Non (era e non) è degno alla condizion nostra, disse lui, di fingere; come molti giovani, pensando Eleazaro di nonanta anni doversi transferire alla vita della gente (forestiera e) aliena,	24 For it doth not become our age, said he, to dissemble: whereby many young persons might think that Eleazar, at the age of fourscore and ten years, was gone over to the life of the heathens:
25 e loro per cagione della mia simulazione, e amore di un poco di vita corruttibile, siano ingannati; e per questo acquisti alla mia vecchiezza macula, e cosa aliena dalle cose sacre.	25 And so they, through my dissimulation, and for a little time of a corruptible life, should be deceived, end hereby I should bring a stain and a curse upon my old age.
26 Però che se [bene] nel tempo presente io sia liberato dalli supplicii umani, niente di meno nè vivo nè morto potrò fuggire la mano dello Onnipotente Iddio.	26 For though, for the present time, I should be delivered from the punishments of men, yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty neither alive nor dead.
27 Per la qual cagione fortemente superando questa vita, apparirò degno di antichitade.	27 Wherefore by departing manfully out of this life, I shall shew myself worthy of my old age:
28 E alli giovani lascerò (buono e) forte esempio, se con l'animo pronto e costante per osservazione delle nostre santissime e verissime leggi passerò da questa vita con una onesta morte. E dette queste cose, sùbito era menato al supplicio.	28 And I shall leave an example of fortitude to young men, if with a ready mind and constancy I suffer an honourable death, for the most venerable and most holy laws. And having spoken thus, he was forthwith carried to execution.
29 E quelli che il menavano, e poco inanzi dimostrarono qualche misericordia (volendolo liberare), si voltorono in ira (contro a lui) per le parole che lui avea dette, le quali loro pensavano che per arroganza le avesse dette.	29 And they that led him, and had been a little before more mild, were changed to wrath for the words he had spoken, which they thought were uttered out of arrogancy.
30 E conciosia cosa che con gravi piaghe lo percotessero (per ucciderlo), cominciò a lacrimare e disse: Signore, il quale conosci per manifesta scienza, tu sai che possendo esser liberato dalla morte, io sostengo durissimi dolori corporali; ma secondo l' anima, per lo tuo timore, volontieri sostengo queste cose.	30 But when he was now ready to die with the stripes, he groaned, and said: O Lord, who hast the holy knowledge, thou knowest manifestly that whereas I might be delivered from death, I suffer grevious pains in body: but in soul am well content to suffer these things because I fear thee.
31 Ed Eleazaro a questo modo si morì, lasciando memoria della morte sua ad esempio di virtù e di fortezza, non solo alli giovani, ma anco a tutta la gente.	31 Thus did this man die, leaving not only to young men, but also to the whole nation, the memory of his death for an example of virtue and fortitude.
