1 Allora lo re Antioco cercava le regioni (e le contrade) di sopra, e intese che in Persia era una nobilissima cittade, e copiosa d'oro e d'ariento, la quale avea nome Elimaide.	1 As King Antiochus was traversing the inland provinces, he heard that in Persia there was a city called Elymais, famous for its wealth in silver and gold,
2 E avea uno tempio molto ricco; e avea veli d'oro e loriche (cioè panziere) e scudi, i quali avea lasciati Alessandro del re Filippo di Macedonia, il quale prima regnò in Grecia.	2 and that its temple was very rich, containing gold helmets, breastplates, and weapons left there by Alexander, son of Philip, king of Macedon, the first king of the Greeks.
3 Di che ello venne ivi, e cercava di prendere la cittade, e di rubarla; ed egli non potèo, imperciò che quegli della cittade se n'accorsono.	3 He went therefore and tried to capture and pillage the city. But he could not do so, because his plan became known to the people of the city
4 E si levarono contro a lui a battaglia; ed egli se ne fuggì, e andossene con grande tristizia, e tornòe in Babilonia.	4 who rose up in battle against him. So he retreated and in great dismay withdrew from there to return to Babylon.
5 E fugli annunziato in Perside, come l' oste sua, ch' era nella terra Giudaica, era stata sconfitta e cacciata;	5 While he was in Persia, a messenger brought him news that the armies sent into the land of Judah had been put to flight;
6 e come Lisia v'era andato in prima con grande potenza, e come era istato cacciato da' Giudei; e come loro erano fatti potenti d'arme e di forze e di molte prede, le quali loro aveano guadagnate nell' oste che loro aveano sconfitto;	6 that Lysias had gone at first with a strong army and been driven back by the Israelites; that they had grown strong by reason of the arms, men, and abundant possessions taken from the armies they had destroyed;
7 e che loro aveano fatte radunare l'abominazioni, le quali loro aveano edificato sopra l'altare di Ierusalem, e aveano circondato il santuario d' alte mura, sì come era in prima, e come loro aveano preso Betsura sua propria cittade.	7 that they had pulled down the Abomination which he had built upon the altar in Jerusalem; and that they had surrounded with high walls both the sanctuary, as it had been before, and his city of Beth-zur.
8 E quando lo re ebbe intese queste novelle, molto si spaventò, e fu commosso (fortemente a grande ira e dolore); e puosesi a giacere nel letto, e cadde in grande infermità per la grande tristizia, però che non era avvenuto com' egli si pensava.	8 When the king heard this news, he was struck with fear and very much shaken. Sick with grief because his designs had failed, he took to his bed.
9 E quivi stette molti dì; però che grande tristizia si rinnovò in lui, (e aggravando forte di sua malattia) e pensò di morire.	9 There he remained many days, overwhelmed with sorrow, for he knew he was going to die.
10 E chiamò a sè tutti i suoi amici, e disse loro: il sonno s'è partito dagli occhi miei, e sono caduto e venuto meno nel mio cuore per la sollecitudine.	10 So he called in all his Friends and said to them: "Sleep has departed from my eyes, for my heart is sinking with anxiety.
11 E dissi nel mio animo: in quanta tribulazione sono io scorso, e in quante tempestadi (di tribulazioni e) di tristizia mi ritrovo io ora, il quale era lieto (e avea diletto nello animo) ed era amato nella mia podestade!	11 I said to myself: 'Into what tribulation have I come, and in what floods of sorrow am I now!
12 Veramente ora mi ricordo io de' mali i quali io feci in Ierusalem, onde io trassi tutte le spoglie dell' oro e dell' ariento che v' erano, e sanza cagione io comandai che ne fussono cacciati li suoi abitanti.	12 Yet I was kindly and beloved in my rule.' But I now recall the evils I did in Jerusalem, when I carried away all the vessels of gold and silver that were in it, and for no cause gave orders that the inhabitants of Judah be destroyed.
13 Certo io conosco (apertamente) che per ciò tanti mali m' hanno ritrovato; onde ecco ch' io ne muoio in terra strana con grande tristizia.	13 I know that this is why these evils have overtaken me; and now I am dying, in bitter grief, in a foreign land."
14 Allora chiamò Filippo, uno de' suoi amici, e ordinollo sopra tutto il suo regno.	14 Then he summoned Philip, one of his Friends, and put him in charge of his whole kingdom.
15 E diedegli la corona dell' oro, e la sua stola e lo anello, acciò ch' egli traesse inanzi il suo figliuolo Antioco, e allevasselo, e facesselo regnare.	15 He gave him his crown, his robe, and his signet ring, so that he might guide the king's son Antiochus and bring him up to be king.
16 E così quivi morì lo re Antioco ne' CXLVIIII anni (del regno de' Greci).	16 King Antiochus died in Persia in the year one hundred and forty-nine.
17 E Lisia seppe che il re (Antioco) era morto, e ch' egli avea lasciato che regnasse il suo figliuolo Antioco, il quale Lisia aveva allevato di giovane; e chiamò il nome suo Eupatore.	17 When Lysias learned that the king was dead, he set up the king's son Antiochus, whom he had reared as a child, to be king in his place; and he gave him the title Eupator.
18 E (avvenne adunque che) quegli ch' erano nella ròcca aveano rinchiuso il popolo d' Israel nel cerchio de' santi, e desideravano di fare sempre male a quegli del popolo d' Israel per fortificamento delle genti.	18 The men in the citadel were hemming in Israel around the sanctuary, continually trying to harm them and to strengthen the Gentiles.
19 Ma Giuda pensò di consumargli; e radunò tutto il popolo per assediargli.	19 But Judas planned to destroy them, and called all the people together to besiege them.
20 E così tutti insieme gli attorniarono nelli CL anni (del regno de' Greci), e sì gli assediarono, facendo fare balestri e ingegni.	20 So in the year one hundred and fifty they assembled and stormed the citadel, for which purpose he constructed catapults and other devices.
21 Ma alquanti degli assediati (sì partirono e) andòronsene fuori, e alquanti perfidi della gente giudea si se ne andorono insieme con loro.	21 Some of the besieged escaped, joined by impious Israelites;
22 a quello ch' era novello re, e sì gli dissono: perche non fai tu giudicio, e vendichi i nostri fratelli?	22 they went to the king and said: "How long will you fail to do justice and avenge our kinsmen?
23 Noi sì deliberammo di servire al tuo padre, e di seguire li suoi comandamenti, e d' ubbidire alle. sue leggi.	23 We agreed to serve your father and to follow his orders and obey his edicts.
24 Onde i figliuoli del nostro popolo si straniavano da noi; e chiunque era trovato di noi, era morto, e le nostre ereditadi erano tolte.	24 And for this the sons of our people have become our enemies; they have put to death as many of us as they could find and have plundered our estates.
25 E non solamente hanno distesa la loro potenza insino a noi, ma eziandio in tutti li nostri confini.	25 They have acted aggressively not only against us, but throughout their whole territory.
26 Ed ecco che oggi sono posti a campo alla ròcca di Ierusalem, e credonla occupare, e sì hanno armata la (ròcca e la) fortezza di Betsura.	26 Look! They have now besieged the citadel in Jerusalem in order to capture it, and they have fortified the sanctuary and Beth-zur.
27 E se tu subitamente non ci soccorri, loro faranno maggiori cose che queste, e non gli potrai raffrenare.	27 Unless you quickly forestall them, they will do even worse things than these, and you will not be able to stop them."
28 Molto si conturbò lo re, udito ch' ebbe queste cose; e convocòe tutti li suoi amici, e prìncipi di suo oste, e quelli ch' erano principi de' cavalieri.	28 When the king heard this he was angry, and he called together all his Friends, the officers of his army, and the commanders of the cavalry.
29 Ancora degli altri reami, e delle isole (e de' confini e di quelli delle) marine sì vennono a lui grande oste di gente soldata.	29 Mercenary forces also came to him from other kingdoms and from the islands of the seas.
30 E fue il numero de' pedoni dell' oste C milia, e de' cavalieri XX milia; e furonvi XXXII elefanti, i quali erano ammaestrati a battaglia.	30 His army numbered a hundred thousand foot-soldiers, twenty thousand cavalry, and thirty-two elephants trained for war.
31 E vennero per lo paese di Idumea, e posaronsi a Betsura, e combatteronla per molti dì, e feciono molti ingegni; ma (quegli di dentro del popolo d'Israel) uscirono fuori, e combatterono valentemente, e misono fuoco negl' ingegni.	31 They passed through Idumea and camped before Beth-zur. For many days they attacked it; they constructed siege-devices, but the besieged made a sortie and burned these, and they fought bravely.
32 Ma Giuda (sentendo queste cose e la grande oste del re incontanente) si partì dallo assedio della ròcca, e colla sua gente passò [a Betzacara] al campo del re.	32 Then Judas marched away from the citadel and moved his camp to Beth-zechariah, on the way to the king's camp.
33 E levando il re inanzi dì, (venne colla saa gente a Betzacara, e) concitòe l'oste allo assalimento contro a Betzacara; e quegli dello esercito (del re, vedendosi de' loro avversarii) s' apparecchiarono a combattere, e sonarono le trombe.	33 The king, rising before dawn, moved his force hastily along the road to Beth-zechariah; and the armies prepared for battle, while the trumpets sounded.
34 E mostrarono agli elefanti il sangue dell' uve e delle more, per fargli più arditi nella battaglia.	34 They showed the elephants the juice of grapes and mulberries to provoke them to fight.
35 E divisono le dette bestie per legioni; e a ciascuno elefante fue assegnato mille fanti armati di lorica, e aveano cappelli di rame nel loro capo; e a ciascuna bestia furono deputati cinquecento cavalieri eletti.	35 The beasts were distributed along the phalanxes, each elephant having assigned to it a thousand men in coats of mail, with bronze helmets, and five hundred picked cavalry.
36 I quali continuamente erano colli elefanti, andandogli inanzi dovunque loro andavano; e non si partivano da loro.	36 These anticipated the beast wherever it was; and wherever it moved, they moved too and never left it.
37 E sopra ciascuno elefante era una torre di legname, fermata in defensione dell' oste, e sopra ciascuna erano ingegni; ed eranvi XXXII uomini armati in ciascuna torre, i quali combattevano di sopra (contra li nimici); e dentro v'era il maestro. (degli ingegni e) dell' elefante.	37 A strong wooden tower covering each elephant, and fastened to it by a harness, held, besides the Indian mahout, three soldiers who fought from it.
38 E tutta l'altra oste de' cavalieri ordinò il re in due parti; e ordinò che si movessono a suono di trombe, e che ordinatamente si strignessono insieme a legioni.	38 The remaining cavalry were stationed on one or the other of the two flanks of the army, to harass the enemy and to be protected from the phalanxes.
39 E quando il sole risplendette nelli loro scudi (d'essi) coperti d' oro e di rame, negli monti risplendevano; e (nelli campi) rilucevano a modo di lampane.	39 When the sun shone on the gold and bronze shields, the mountains gleamed with their brightness and blazed like flaming torches.
40 E l' una parte dell' oste del re fu divisa ad andare su per gli monti alti, e gli altri andavano per i luoghi bassi; e andavano saviamente e con ordine.	40 Part of the king's army extended over the heights, while some were on low ground, but they marched forward steadily and in good order.
41 E loro commossono tutti gli abitatori di quelle contrade per la voce della loro moltitudine, e per lo viaggio della turba, e per lo rumore dell' arme; per ciò ch' ella era grande oste e molto forte.	41 All who heard the noise of their numbers, the tramp of their marching, and the clashing of the arms, trembled; for the army was very great and strong.
42 Allora Giuda e la sua gente s' aggiunsono alla battaglia; e caddono (cioè furono morti) di quegli del re secento uomini.	42 Judas with his army advanced to fight, and six hundred men of the king's army fell.
43 E (in quell' ora) Eleazaro, figliuolo di Saura, vidde uno delli elefanti, il quale avea l'insegna della panciera del re, il quale elefante era maggiore d'altezza di tutti gli altri; e parve a lui che quivi fosse lo re.	43 Eleazar, called Avaran, saw one of the beasts bigger than any of the others and covered with royal armor, and he thought the king must be on it.
44 E disposesi alla morte, per liberare il suo popolo, e per acquistarsi (onore e glorioso) nome in eterno.	44 So he gave up his life to save his people and win an everlasting name for himself.
45 E corse allo elefante arditamente per mezzo la legione, uccidendo li nimici a destra e a sinistra, e gittavali per terra di qua e di là.	45 He dashed up to it in the middle of the phalanx, killing men right and left, so that they fell back from him on both sides.
46 E andò sotto allo elefante, e sè medesimo sottopuose a lui, e sì lo uccise; e cadde la bestia in terra sopra lui, e così morì quivi (Eleazaro).	46 He ran right under the elephant and stabbed it in the belly, killing it. The beast fell to the ground on top of him, and he died there.
47 E allora veggendo (Giuda e la sua gente) la potenza del re e della sua grande oste, per lo meglio si spartirono da loro.	47 When the Jews saw the strength of the royal army and the ardor of its forces, they retreated from them.
48 Ma l'oste dello re sì andò dietro a loro in Ierusalem, ponendo lo re il campo in Giudea nel monte Sion.	48 A part of the king's army went up to Jerusalem to attack them, and the king established camps in Judea and at Mount Zion.
49 E fece pace con quelli di Betsura; e per la carestia della vittuaglia di quelli ch' erano nella cittade rinchiusi, se n' uscirono fuori, però che le terre in quello anno non si seminarono.	49 He made peace with the men of Beth-zur, and they evacuated the city, because they had no food there to enable them to stand a siege, for that was a sabbath year in the land.
50 E allora lo re prese (la città) Betsura, e puosevi sua gente a guardia.	50 The king took Beth-zur and stationed a garrison there to hold it.
51 E puose il campo al luogo della santificazione per molti dì; e puosevi balestri e ingegni e gittamenti di fuoco e artificii da gittare pietre e lance e dardi, e per gittare saette e manganelle.	51 For many days he besieged the sanctuary, setting up artillery and machines, fire-throwers, catapults and mechanical bows for shooting arrows and slingstones.
52 E quelli dentro feciono ingegni similmente contro alli loro ingegni, e combatterono molti dì.	52 The Jews countered by setting up machines of their own, and kept up the fight a long time.
53 Ma lo fornimento della vittuaglia non era nella città, imperò che già era il settimo anno (della guerra); e gli uomini della gente pagana, ch' erano rimasi in Giudea aveano consumato l'avanzo di · quelle cose ch' erano riposte.	53 But there were no provisions in the storerooms, because it was the seventh year, and the tide-over provisions had been eaten up by those who had been rescued from the Gentiles and brought to Judea.
54 E rimasono nelli santi luoghi pochi uomini, però che la fame gli avea molto occupati; e dispersonsi tutti, chi in uno luogo e chi in uno altro.	54 Few men remained in the sanctuary; the rest scattered, each to his own home, for the famine was too much for them.
55 E udì Lisia, che Filippo, il quale il re Antioco, mentre ch' era vivo, ordinò che nutrisse Antioco suo figliuolo, acciò che regnasse,	55 Lysias heard that Philip, whom King Antiochus, before his death, had appointed to train his son Antiochus to be king,
56 era ritornato di Persia e di Media, e anco lo esercito il quale era con lui andato, e ch' egli cercava di prendere il governo del reame.	56 had returned from Persia and Media with the army that accompanied the king, and that he was seeking to take over the government.
57 Ora Lisia si studiò di andare (verso il re), e dire al re e agli (suoi) principi dello esercito: noi sì vegnamo meno continuamente, e abbiamo mancamento di vittuaglia, e lo luogo che noi assediamo armato e fornito, e a noi bisogna di ordinare i fatti del reame.	57 So he hastily resolved to withdraw. He said to the king, the leaders of the army, and the soldiers: "We are grow-ing weaker every day, our provisions are scanty, the place we are besieging is strong, and it is our duty to take care of the affairs of the kingdom.
58 E accordiamci con questi uomini, e facciamo pace con loro e con tutta la loro gente.	58 Therefore let us now come to terms with these men, and make peace with them and all their nation.
59 E concediamo loro, ch' egli vivano secondo la legge loro, secondo che loro sì facevano in prima; imperciò che loro sono adirati incontro a noi per le loro leggi, che noi aviamo dispregiate, e perciò hanno fatto tutte queste cose.	59 Let us grant them freedom to live according to their own laws as formerly; it was on account of their laws, which we abolished, that they became angry and did all these things."
60 E piacque allo re il detto sermone, e mandòe a fare pace con loro, e ricevetterla.	60 The proposal found favor with the king and the leaders;
61 E giurolla lo re e li suoi principi; e uscirono della fortezza.	61 he sent peace terms to the Jews, and they accepted. So the king and the leaders swore an oath to them, and on these terms they evacuated the fortification.
62 E lo re entrò nel monte di Sion, e vidde la fortezza del luogo; e ruppe a loro tostamente il sacramento che avea fatto, e comandò che le mura si disfacessono d' intorno.	62 But when the king entered Mount Zion and saw how the place was fortified, he broke the oath he had sworn and gave orders for the encircling wall to be destroyed.
63 E poi incontanente si partì, e ritornossi ad Antiochia, e trovò che Filippo signoreggiava nella terra; di che combattè contro a lui, e (per forza) acquistòe la cittade.	63 Then he departed in haste and returned to Antioch, where he found Philip in possession of the city. He fought against him and took the city by force.
