| 4 poiché ci è stato fatto il dono di promesse valide ed eccezionali, in modo che diventaste per mezzo di esse partecipi della natura divina, fuggendo la corruzione che si trova nelle passioni sfrenate del mondo. | 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, that through these you may escape from the corruption that is in the world because of passion, and become partakers of the divine nature. |
| 5 E proprio per questo, mettendo in atto tutta la vostra diligenza, aggiungete la virtù alla fede, la conoscenza alla virtù, | 5 For this very reason make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, |
| 6 l'autodominio alla conoscenza, la costanza all'autodominio, la pietà alla costanza, | 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, |
| 7 la carità fraterna alla pietà, l'amore alla carità fraterna. | 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. |
| 8 Tutte queste qualità, se saranno presenti e abbonderanno in voi, vi permetteranno di non essere inerti e infruttuosi nella conoscenza approfondita del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo. | 8 For if these things are yours and abound, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
| 9 Chi invece è privo di queste qualità è un cieco che sbatte le palpebre, dimentico della purificazione avvenuta dei suoi peccati di un tempo. | 9 For whoever lacks these things is blind and shortsighted and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. |
| 10 Perciò ancora di più, fratelli, studiatevi di rendere salda la vocazione e la scelta di cui siete stati fatti oggetto: facendo questo mai subirete un danno. | 10 Therefore, brethren, be the more zealous to confirm your call and election, for if you do this you will never fall; |
| 11 Così infatti vi sarà elargito doviziosamente l'ingresso nel regno eterno del Signore nostro e salvatore Gesù Cristo. | 11 so there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. |
| 12 Perciò non cesserò mai dal richiamarvi alla mente queste cose, anche se voi le sapete e nella verità posseduta vi siete già consolidati tra di voi. | 12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these things, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. |
| 13 Ritengo opportuno fin quando mi trovo ad abitare in questa tenda, continuare a stimolarvi con la mia esortazione, | 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to arouse you by way of reminder, |
| 14 sapendo che il tempo di levare la mia tenda è vicino, come anche il Signore nostro Gesù Cristo mi manifestò. | 14 since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me. |
| 15 Mi darò premura che voi possiate in qualunque tempo, dopo la mia partenza, rievocare queste cose. | 15 And I will see to it that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things. |
| 16 Poiché non abbiamo seguito dei miti sofisticati per manifestarvi la forza e il ritorno del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo: siamo stati invece spettatori oculari della sua grandezza. | 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. |
| 17 Poiché egli ricevette onore e gloria da Dio Padre quando, da parte di quella stessa gloria sublime, gli fu rivolta una voce che diceva: "Il Figlio mio, l'amato, è costui e io in lui mi sono compiaciuto". | 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased," |
| 18 Questa voce noi l'udimmo rivolta dal cielo, quando stavamo con lui sul monte santo. | 18 we heard this voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. |
| 19 E abbiamo resa così più solida la parola dei profeti cui fate bene ad attenervi: è come una lucerna che brilla in un luogo tenebroso, fino a quando non cominci a splendere il giorno e la stella del mattino spunti nei vostri cuori. | 19 And we have the prophetic word made more sure. You will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. |
| 20 Sappiate anzitutto questo: a nessuna profezia della Scrittura compete un'interpretazione soggettiva. | 20 First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, |
| 21 La profezia infatti non ci fu portata per iniziativa umana, ma degli uomini parlarono da parte di Dio, sospinti dallo Spirito Santo. | 21 because no prophecy ever came by the impulse of man, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. |
