| 2 Bisogna infatti che l'episcopo sia irreprensibile, marito di una sola moglie, sobrio, prudente, dignitoso, ospitale, adatto all'insegnamento, | 2 Now a bishop must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, dignified, hospitable, an apt teacher, |
| 3 non dedito al vino, non violento ma indulgente, non litigioso, non attaccato al denaro; | 3 no drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, and no lover of money. |
| 4 che sappia ben governare la propria famiglia e tenere con grande dignità i figli in sudditanza. | 4 He must manage his own household well, keeping his children submissive and respectful in every way; |
| 5 Poiché se uno non sa governare la propria famiglia, come potrà aver cura della chiesa di Dio? | 5 for if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how can he care for God's church? |
| 6 Non sia però un neofita, per timore che, gonfiato dall'orgoglio, non incorra nella medesima condanna toccata al diavolo. | 6 He must not be a recent convert, or he may be puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil; |
| 7 Bisogna inoltre che abbia una buona testimonianza da quelli di fuori, perché non cada in discredito e nei lacci del diavolo. | 7 moreover he must be well thought of by outsiders, or he may fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. |
| 8 I diaconi ugualmente siano dignitosi, non doppi nel parlare, non dediti al molto vino, né avidi di turpe guadagno; | 8 Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for gain; |
| 9 essi inoltre devono conservare il mistero della fede in una coscienza pura. | 9 they must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. |
| 10 Anch'essi vengano prima sperimentati e quindi, se sono irreprensibili, esercitino il loro ministero. | 10 And let them also be tested first; then if they prove themselves blameless let them serve as deacons. |
| 11 Alla stessa maniera le donne siano dignitose, non calunniatrici, sobrie, fedeli in ogni cosa. | 11 The women likewise must be serious, no slanderers, but temperate, faithful in all things. |
| 12 I diaconi siano mariti di una sola moglie, sappiano governare bene i loro figli e le loro case. | 12 Let deacons be the husband of one wife, and let them manage their children and their households well; |
| 13 Infatti, quelli che avranno ben servito si acquisteranno un grado onorifico e molta sicurezza nella fede che è in Gesù Cristo. | 13 for those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. |
