Giosuè 3

1 Giosuè si levò di buon mattino; egli e tutti i figli d'Israele si mossero da Sittim e giunsero fino al Giordano, dove si fermarono prima di attraversare.	1 Early the next morning, Joshua moved with all the Israelites from Shittim to the Jordan, where they lodged before crossing over.
2 Al termine di tre giorni, gli ufficiali passarono per tutto l'accampamento	2 Three days later the officers went through the camp
3 e diedero al popolo quest'ordine: "Quando vedrete l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore, Dio vostro, e i sacerdoti leviti che la portano, muovetevi dal vostro posto e seguitela.	3 and issued these instructions to the people: "When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD, your God, which the levitical priests will carry, you must also break camp and follow it,
4 Ci sarà però tra voi e l'arca una distanza di circa duemila cubiti; non avvicinatevi ad essa. Così voi potete sapere che strada fare, perché voi non siete mai passati per questa strada né ieri né avantieri".	4 that you may know the way to take, for you have not gone over this road before. But let there be a space of two thousand cubits between you and the ark. Do not come nearer to it."
5 Giosuè disse quindi al popolo: "Santificatevi, perché domani il Signore farà meraviglie in mezzo a voi!".	5 Joshua also said to the people, "Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will perform wonders among you."
6 Ai sacerdoti Giosuè parlò così: "Prendete l'arca dell'alleanza e passate in testa al popolo". Quelli presero l'arca dell'alleanza e cominciarono a marciare alla testa del popolo.	6 And he directed the priests to take up the ark of the covenant and go on ahead of the people; and they did so.
7 Allora il Signore disse a Giosuè: "Quest'oggi comincio a renderti grande davanti a tutto Israele, affinché sappia che sono con te, come fui con Mosè.	7 Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know I am with you, as I was with Moses.
8 Da' dunque quest'ordine ai sacerdoti che portano l'arca dell'alleanza: "Allorché sarete giunti ai limiti delle acque del Giordano, fermatevi lì presso il Giordano".	8 Now command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant to come to a halt in the Jordan when they reach the edge of the waters."
9 Giosuè disse allora ai figli d'Israele: "Avvicinatevi e ascoltate le disposizioni del Signore, vostro Dio".	9 So Joshua said to the Israelites, "Come here and listen to the words of the LORD, your God."
10 Giosuè continuò: "In questo riconoscerete che il Dio vivente è in mezzo a voi e che farà fuggire davanti a voi i Cananei, gli Hittiti, gli Evei, i Perizziti, i Gergesei, gli Amorrei e i Gebusei.	10 He continued: "This is how you will know that there is a living God in your midst, who at your approach will dispossess the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites.
11 Ecco che l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore di tutta la terra sta per passare il Giordano, davanti a voi.	11 The ark of the covenant of the LORD of the whole earth will precede you into the Jordan.
12 Intanto adesso sceglietevi dodici uomini delle tribù d'Israele, uno per ciascuna tribù.	12 (Now choose twelve men, one from each of the tribes of Israel.)
13 Appena le piante dei piedi dei sacerdoti che portano l'arca di Dio, Signore di tutta la terra, si poseranno sulle acque del Giordano, si bloccheranno le sue acque: quelle che scendono dall'alto si staccheranno da quelle che scendono in basso e s'arresteranno come una sola massa".	13 When the soles of the feet of the priests carrying the ark of the LORD, the Lord of the whole earth, touch the water of the Jordan, it will cease to flow; for the water flowing down from upstream will halt in a solid bank."
14 Quando il popolo tolse le tende per passare il Giordano, i sacerdoti portavano l'arca dell'alleanza davanti a tutto il popolo.	14 The people struck their tents to cross the Jordan, with the priests carrying the ark of the covenant ahead of them.
15 E quando quelli che portavano l'arca giunsero al Giordano e i piedi dei sacerdoti che portavano l'arca si bagnavano ai bordi delle acque -- il Giordano è in piena fin sopra le sue sponde per tutto il tempo delle messi --	15 No sooner had these priestly bearers of the ark waded into the waters at the edge of the Jordan, which overflows all its banks during the entire season of the harvest,
16 le acque del Giordano che scendono dall'alto si fermarono, ergendosi come una sola massa, a grande distanza, presso Adama, la città che è vicina a Zartan; e le acque che vanno verso il mare dell'Araba, il Mar Morto, si staccarono completamente; così il popolo attraversò di fronte a Gerico.	16 than the waters flowing from upstream halted, backing up in a solid mass for a very great distance indeed, from Adam, a city in the direction of Zarethan; while those flowing downstream toward the Salt Sea of the Arabah disappeared entirely. Thus the people crossed over opposite Jericho.
17 I sacerdoti che portavano l'arca dell'alleanza del Signore rimasero all'asciutto, in piedi, in mezzo al Giordano; e tutto Israele passò all'asciutto, finché tutto il popolo non ebbe terminato di passare il Giordano.	17 While all Israel crossed over on dry ground, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD remained motionless on dry ground in the bed of the Jordan until the whole nation had completed the passage.
