Siracide 23

LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Signore, padre e signore della mia vita, non abbandonarmi al loro capriccio e non farmi cadere a causa loro.	1 Lord, father and master of my life, do not abandon me to their whims, do not let me fal because ofthem.
2 Chi porrà i flagelli nella mia mente e insegnerà la sapienza al mio cuore, perché siano severi coi miei errori ed io non tolleri i loro sbagli?	2 Who wil lay whips to my thoughts, and the discipline of wisdom to my heart, to be merciless to myerrors and not let my sins go unchecked,
3 Così non si moltiplicheranno i miei errori e non s'accresceranno i miei peccati; non cadrò dinanzi ai miei oppositori e non si rallegrerà il mio nemico.	3 for fear my errors should multiply and my sins then abound and I fal before my adversaries, and myenemy gloat over me?
4 Signore, padre e Dio della mia vita, non darmi occhi alteri,	4 Lord, father and God of my life, do not let my eyes be proud,
5 e le smanie perverse allontana da me;	5 turn envy away from me,
6 sensualità e lussuria non mi prendano, non abbandonarmi all'inverecondia.	6 do not let lechery and lust grip me, do not leave me a prey to shameless desire.
7 Ascoltate, o figli, l'istruzione della mia bocca, chi vi bada non sarà confuso.	7 Children, listen to what I teach, no one who keeps it wil be caught out.
8 Il peccatore sarà rovinato dalle sue labbra, con esse sbaglieranno l'invidioso e il superbo.	8 The sinner is ensnared by his own lips, both the abusive and the proud are tripped by them.
9 Non abituare la bocca a giurare e non essere solito nominare il Santo.	9 Do not get into the habit of swearing, do not make a habit of naming the Holy One;
10 Come il servo che è sempre sotto controllo non mancherà di prendere le lividure, così chi giura e lo nomina continuamente non sarà immune dal peccato.	10 for just as a slave who is constantly overseen wil never be without bruises, so someone who is alwaysswearing and uttering the Name wil not be exempt from sin.
11 Chi giura molto, molto peccherà, il flagello non sarà lungi dalla sua casa; se egli sbaglia, il peccato è sopra di lui, se giura con leggerezza, pecca due volte. Se giura falsamente, non sarà giustificato e la sua casa sarà piena di assalti.	11 A man for ever swearing is full of iniquity, and the scourge wil not depart from his house. If he offends,his sin wil be on him, if he did it unheedingly, he has doubly sinned; if he swears a false oath, he wil not betreated as innocent, for his house wil be fil ed with calamities.
12 C'è un parlare che conduce alla morte: che non si trovi nell'eredità di Giacobbe; tutto questo sia tenuto lontano dai pii ché non si avvoltolino nei peccati.	12 One way of talking is like death, let it not be found in the heritage of Jacob since devout people havenothing to do with that: they wil not wal ow in sin.
13 Non abituare la bocca alle oscene volgarità, perché c'è in esse occasione di peccato.	13 Do not get into the habit of using coarse and foul language since this involves sinful words.
14 Ricòrdati di tuo padre e di tua madre quando siedi a consiglio coi grandi, in presenza di questi non dimenticarti di loro; saresti tanto stolto nella tua condotta da desiderare di non esser nato e da maledire il giorno della nascita.	14 Remember your father and mother when you are sitting with the great, for fear you forget yourself intheir presence and behave like a fool, and then wish you had not been born and curse the day of your birth.
15 L'uomo abituato ai discorsi oltraggiosi non si correggerà in tutti i suoi giorni.	15 No one in the habit of using shameful language wil break himself of it as long as he lives.
16 Due specie di uomini moltiplicano i peccati e la terza attira la collera:	16 There are two types of people who commit sin after sin and a third who attracts retribution-
17 la passione ardente come fuoco che brucia e non si spegne finché non si consuma; l'uomo sensuale nel suo corpo che non s'acquieta finché il fuoco non lo divora. All'uomo sensuale ogni pane è soave, non si stanca fino a quando muore.	17 desire, blazing like a furnace, wil not die down until it has been sated- the man who lusts aftermembers of his own family is not going to stop until he is quite burnt out; every food is sweet to the promiscuous,and he wil not desist until he dies;
18 L'uomo che tradisce il letto coniugale dice tra sé: "Chi mi vede? Attorno c'è il buio, le mura mi nascondono, nessuno mi vede, perché temere? L'Altissimo non ricorderà i miei peccati".	18 and the man who sins against the marriage bed and says to himself, 'Who can see me? There isdarkness all round me, the wal s hide me, no one can see me, why should I worry? The Most High wil notremember my sins.'
19 Egli teme solo gli occhi degli uomini, ignorando che gli occhi del Signore son mille volte più luminosi del sole, vegliano tutte le vie degli uomini e penetrano gli angoli più nascosti.	19 What he fears are human eyes, he does not realise that the eyes of the Lord are ten thousand timesbrighter than the sun, observing every aspect of human behaviour, seeing into the most secret corners.
20 A lui tutto è noto prima d'essere creato, ed allo stesso modo dopo che è completato.	20 Al things were known to him before they were created, and are stil , now that they are finished.
21 Costui sarà condannato nelle strade della città e sarà afferrato dove non s'aspetta.	21 This man will be punished in view of the whole town, and wil be seized when he least expects it.
22 Così la donna che tradisce il marito e gli porta un erede avuto da altri.	22 Similarly the woman unfaithful to her husband, who provides him with an heir by another man:
23 Primo, disobbedisce alla legge dell'Altissimo, secondo, sbaglia con suo marito, terzo, fa adulterio per sensualità e porta a casa figli d'un altro uomo.	23 first, she has disobeyed the Law of the Most High; secondly, she has been false to her husband; andthirdly, she has gone whoring in adultery
24 Essa sia condotta nell'assemblea perché s'investighi sui suoi figli.	24 and conceived children by another man. She will be led before the assembly, an enquiry will be heldabout her children.
25 I suoi figli non metteranno radici e i suoi rami non porteranno frutto.	25 Her children wil strike no root, her branches wil bear no fruit.
26 Lascerà il suo ricordo in maledizione, il suo oltraggio non si cancellerà.	26 She wil leave an accursed memory behind her, her shame wil never be wiped out.
27 I posteri riconosceranno che nulla è meglio che il timore del Signore, e niente è più dolce che obbedire ai suoi precetti.	27 And those who survive her wil recognise that nothing is better than fearing the Lord, and nothingsweeter than adherence to the Lord's commandments.
