LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 In seguito i Moabiti e gli Ammoniti, coadiuvati dai Meuniti, mossero guerra a Giosafat.	1 Some time later, the Moabites and Ammonites, and with them the Meunites, advanced to war againstJehoshaphat.
2 Andarono ad annunciare a Giosafat: "Contro di te si è mossa una grande moltitudine da oltremare, da Edom. Ecco, si trova a Cazazon-Tamàr, cioè a Engaddi".	2 Jehoshaphat received the following intel igence, 'A vast horde is advancing on you from the other sideof the Sea, from Edom; they are already at Hazazon-Tamar, that is, En-Gedi.'
3 Giosafat nella paura si mise a cercare il Signore e proclamò un digiuno per tutto Giuda.	3 Jehoshaphat was alarmed and resolved to have recourse to Yahweh; he proclaimed a fast throughoutal Judah.
4 I Giudei si radunarono per cercare aiuto dal Signore; anche da tutte le città di Giuda si venne a supplicare il Signore.	4 So Judah assembled to seek help from Yahweh; to seek Yahweh they came from every town inJudah.
5 Allora Giosafat si levò in piedi nell'assemblea di Giuda e di Gerusalemme nel tempio del Signore di fronte al nuovo cortile	5 Then, standing in the Temple of Yahweh in front of the new court among the assembled people ofJudah and Jerusalem, Jehoshaphat
6 e disse: "Signore, Dio dei nostri padri, non sei forse tu il Dio che stai nei cieli? Tu domini tutti i regni delle genti. Nelle tue mani sono la forza e la potenza, non c'è nessuno che possa misurarsi con te.	6 said, 'Yahweh, God of our ancestors, are you not God in heaven, and do you not rule al the kingdomsof the nations? Your power and might are such that no one can resist you.
7 Non sei forse tu il nostro Dio, che ha espulso gli abitanti di questo paese davanti al tuo popolo Israele e l'ha dato per sempre alla discendenza del tuo amico Abramo?	7 Did not you, our God, dispossess the inhabitants of this country for your people Israel and give it tothe descendants of Abraham, your friend, for ever?
8 Essi l'abitarono e vi costruirono un santuario per il tuo nome dicendo:	8 They have lived in it and built you a sanctuary there for your name,
9 "Se cadrà sopra di noi la sventura, la spada, l'inondazione, la peste o la carestia e ci presenteremo davanti a questo tempio e davanti a te, perché il tuo nome risiede in questo tempio, e grideremo a te dalla nostra tribolazione, allora tu ascolterai e ci verrai in soccorso".	9 saying, "If disaster, war, flood, pestilence or famine befal us, and we stand in front of this Temple,before you -- for your name is in this Temple -- and cry to you in our distress, then you wil listen and rescue us."
10 Ora, ecco gli Ammoniti e i Moabiti e quelli della montagna di Seir, nelle cui terre non permettesti a Israele di entrare, quando uscì dal paese d'Egitto, e perciò esso si tenne lontano da loro e non li sterminò,	10 'Now see, the Ammonites and Moabites and the people of Mount Seir, whom you would not al owIsrael to invade when they came out of Egypt -- on the contrary, Israel avoided them, and did not destroy them-
11 ecco che essi ci ricompensano venendo a cacciarci dalla tua proprietà che ci hai concesso.	11 see how they reward us, by coming to drive us out of your possession which you allotted to us!
12 Dio nostro, non vorrai fare giustizia di loro, poiché siamo senza forza davanti a questa grande moltitudine che viene contro di noi? Non sappiamo cosa fare, perciò i nostri occhi sono rivolti verso di te".	12 Our God, will you not pass sentence on them, since we are helpless against this vast horde about toattack us? Because we do not know what to do, we look to you.'
13 Tutti i Giudei stavano davanti al Signore, compresi i loro bambini, le loro mogli ed i loro figli.	13 Al Judah, including their families, wives and children, were standing before Yahweh,
14 Allora nel mezzo dell'assemblea lo spirito del Signore si posò su Acazièl, figlio di Zaccaria, figlio di Benaià, figlio di Ieièl, figlio di Mattania, levita dei figli di Asaf.	14 when, in the middle of the assembly, the spirit of Yahweh came on Jahaziel son of Zechariah, son ofBenaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah the Levite, a member of the clan of Asaph,
15 Questi disse: "Voi tutti di Giuda, abitanti di Gerusalemme e tu, re Giosafat, prestate attenzione! Così vi dice il Signore: "Non temete e non lasciatevi intimorire davanti a questa grande moltitudine, perché la guerra non è cosa vostra, ma di Dio".	15 who then cried, 'Listen, al Judah and you citizens of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat!Yahweh says this to you, "Do not be afraid, do not be daunted by this vast horde, for the war is not your affair butGod's.
16 Domani scendete contro di loro. Ecco, essi saliranno per la salita di Ziz. Voi li incontrerete al termine della valle di fronte al deserto di Ieruel.	16 Go down against them tomorrow; they are coming up by the Slope of Ziz and you wil encounterthem at the end of the ravine near the desert of Jeruel.
17 Non toccherà a voi combattere in questa circostanza; solo apprestatevi, rimanete fermi e vedrete la salvezza del Signore presso di voi; o Giuda e Gerusalemme, non temete, non lasciatevi impaurire; domani uscite loro incontro e il Signore sarà con voi".	17 You wil not need to fight in this battle. Take up your position, stand firm, and see what salvationYahweh has in store for you. Judah and Jerusalem, be fearless, be dauntless; march out against them tomorrowand Yahweh will be with you." '
18 Allora Giosafat si chinò con la faccia a terra; tutto Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme si prostrarono davanti al Signore per adorarlo.	18 Jehoshaphat bowed his head, his face to the ground, and al Judah and the citizens of Jerusalem feldown before Yahweh to worship Yahweh.
19 I leviti, dei figli dei Keatiti e dei figli dei Korachiti, si alzarono per lodare il Signore, Dio d'Israele, con voce altissima.	19 Then the Levites -- both the Kohathites and Korahites -- stood up to praise Yahweh, God of Israel, atthe top of their voices.
20 La mattina dopo si alzarono presto e partirono per il deserto di Tekòa. Mentre partivano, Giosafat si fermò e disse: "Ascoltatemi, Giuda e abitanti di Gerusalemme! Credete nel Signore, vostro Dio, e sarete saldi; credete nei suoi profeti e avrete successo!".	20 Early next morning they prepared to set out for the desert of Tekoa. As they were setting out,Jehoshaphat stood up and said, 'Listen to me, Judah and you citizens of Jerusalem! Believe in Yahweh yourGod and you wil be secure; believe in his prophets and you wil be successful.'
21 Quindi, consigliatosi con il popolo, pose i cantori del Signore e i salmisti, rivestiti di paramenti sacri, davanti all'armata perché proclamassero: "Lodate il Signore, perché eterna è la sua bontà".	21 Then, having conferred with the people, he appointed singers who were to praise Yahweh and go outahead of the army in sacred vestments, singing Praise Yahweh, for his faithful love endures for ever!
22 Appena cominciarono le acclamazioni e la lode, il Signore tese un'imboscata contro gli Ammoniti, i Moabiti e gli abitanti della montagna di Seir venuti contro Giuda e furono sconfitti.	22 The moment they began their shouts of praise, Yahweh sprang an ambush on the Ammonites,Moabites and the people of Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and that was the end of them,
23 Gli Ammoniti e i Moabiti insorsero contro gli abitanti della montagna di Seir per votarli allo sterminio e distruggerli. Quando ebbero finito con gli abitanti della montagna di Seir, si aiutarono a distruggersi a vicenda.	23 for the Ammonites and Moabites turned on the people of Mount Seir, and put them under the curseof destruction and then, having finished off the people of Seir, set to work slaughtering one another.
24 Quando Giuda giunse al punto dove si vede il deserto e si volse verso la moltitudine, ecco, non c'erano che cadaveri distesi al suolo; nessuno era sfuggito.	24 When Judah reached the point overlooking the desert and looked towards the horde, there werenothing but corpses lying on the ground; no one escaped.
25 Giosafat e la sua gente vennero a prendere il loro bottino e vi trovarono bestiame in abbondanza, ricchezze, vestiti e oggetti preziosi. Ne presero tanto da non poterlo trasportare. Tre giorni impiegarono per depredare le spoglie, tanto esse erano numerose.	25 When Jehoshaphat arrived to take the booty, they found quantities of cattle and innumerablepossessions, clothes and valuables, which they seized for themselves; it was impossible to carry it, and it tookthem three days to collect it.
26 Il quarto giorno si radunarono nella valle di Beracà; perché ivi benedissero il Signore, chiamarono quel luogo valle di Beracà sino ad oggi.	26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, where they blessed Yahweh -- hence theplace was given the name Val ey of Beracah, which it stil has today.
27 Quindi tutti gli uomini di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, con Giosafat in testa, pieni di gioia, presero la via del ritorno verso Gerusalemme, perché il Signore li aveva fatti gioire a spese dei loro nemici.	27 Then al the men of Judah and Jerusalem returned joyfully to Jerusalem with Jehoshaphat at theirhead as Yahweh had given them cause to rejoice over their enemies.
28 Entrarono in Gerusalemme con arpe, cetre e trombe fino al tempio del Signore.	28 To the sound of lyre, harp and trumpet they came to Jerusalem, to the Temple of Yahweh,
29 Il terrore di Dio si sparse su tutti i regni dei paesi, quando si seppe che il Signore aveva combattuto contro i nemici d'Israele.	29 and a panic from Yahweh seized al the neighbouring kings when they heard how Yahweh hadfought against the enemies of Israel.
30 Il regno di Giosafat fu tranquillo; il suo Dio gli aveva concesso pace tutt'intorno.	30 And henceforth Jehoshaphat's reign was undisturbed, for his God gave him peace all round.
31 Giosafat regnò su Giuda. Quando divenne re, aveva trentacinque anni: regnò in Gerusalemme venticinque anni. Sua madre si chiamava Azuba, figlia di Silchi.	31 So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he came to the throne and hereigned for twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.
32 Camminò per la via di suo padre Asa e non se ne distaccò, facendo ciò che è giusto agli occhi del Signore.	32 He fol owed the example of his father Asa undeviatingly, doing what Yahweh regards as right.
33 Tuttavia non scomparvero le alture e il popolo non aveva ancora il cuore rivolto verso il Dio dei suoi padri.	33 The high places, however, were not abolished; the people had still not set their hearts on the God oftheir ancestors.
34 Il resto delle gesta di Giosafat, le prime come le ultime, ecco sono descritte negli Atti di Ieu, figlio di Canani, inseriti nel libro dei re d'Israele.	34 The rest of the history of Jehoshaphat, from first to last, is written down in the records of Jehu son ofHanani, which are quoted in the Book of the Kings of Israel.

The ships were wrecked and werenever fit to sail for Tarshish.
