1 L'anno diciottesimo di Giosafat, re di Giuda, Ioram, figlio di Acab, divenne re d'Israele in Samaria, dove regnò dodici anni.	1 Joram, son of Ahab, became king of Israel in Samaria (in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, and he reigned for twelve years).
2 Egli fece ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, ma non come suo padre e sua madre. Rimosse infatti la stele di Baal che suo padre aveva fatto,	2 He did evil in the LORD'S sight, though not as much as his father and mother. He did away with the pillar of Baal, which his father had made,
3 tuttavia rimase attaccato ai peccati che Geroboamo, figlio di Nebàt, fece commettere a Israele e non se ne allontanò.	3 but he still clung to the sin to which Jeroboam, son of Nebat, had lured Israel; this he did not give up.
4 Mesa, re di Moab, era pastore e pagava in tributo al re d'Israele centomila agnelli e la lana di centomila montoni.	4 Now Mesha, king of Moab, who raised sheep, used to pay the king of Israel as tribute a hundred thousand lambs and the wool of a hundred thousand rams.
5 Quando però morì Acab, il re di Moab si ribellò al re d'Israele.	5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab had rebelled against the king of Israel.
6 In quel giorno il re Ioram uscì da Samaria e passò in rassegna tutto Israele.	6 Joram as king mustered all Israel, and when he set out on a campaign from Samaria,
7 Poi mandò a dire a Giosafat, re di Giuda: "Il re di Moab si è ribellato contro di me; vuoi venire con me a combattere contro Moab?". Quegli rispose: "Salirò! Sarà di me come di te, del mio popolo come del tuo, dei miei cavalli come dei tuoi".	7 he sent the king of Judah the message: "The king of Moab is in rebellion against me. Will you join me in battle against Moab?" "I will," he replied. "You and I shall be as one, your people and mine, and your horses and mine as well."
8 Poi domandò: "Per quale via saliremo?". L'altro rispose: "Per la via del deserto di Edom".	8 They discussed the route for their attack, and settled upon the route through the desert of Edom.
9 Il re d'Israele, il re di Giuda e il re di Edom si misero in viaggio. Compirono un percorso aggirante di sette giorni e venne a mancare l'acqua per la truppa e le bestie della retrovia.	9 So the king of Israel set out, accompanied by the king of Judah and the king of Edom. After their roundabout journey of seven days the water gave out for the army and for the animals with them.
10 Il re d'Israele esclamò: "Ahimè! Il Signore ha chiamato questi tre re per darli in mano di Moab".	10 "Alas!" exclaimed the king of Israel. "The LORD has called together these three kings to put them in the grasp of Moab."
11 Ma Giosafat domandò: "Non c'è qui un profeta del Signore per mezzo del quale possiamo consultare il Signore?". Uno dei servi del re d'Israele rispose: "C'è qui Eliseo, figlio di Safat, che versava l'acqua sulle mani di Elia".	11 But the king of Judah asked, "Is there no prophet of the LORD here through whom we may inquire of the LORD?" One of the officers of the king of Israel replied, "Elisha, son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah, is here."
12 Giosafat soggiunse: "La parola del Signore è con lui". Il re d'Israele, Giosafat e il re di Edom discesero dunque da lui.	12 "He has the word of the LORD," the king of Judah agreed. So the kings of Israel, Judah, and Edom went down to Elisha.
13 Eliseo disse al re d'Israele: "Che c'è tra me e te? Va' dai profeti di tuo padre e dai profeti di tua madre!". Gli rispose il re d'Israele: "No, perché il Signore ha chiamato questi tre re per darli in mano a Moab".	13 "What do you want with me?" Elisha asked the king of Israel. "Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother." "No," the king of Israel replied. "The LORD has called these three kings together to put them in the grasp of Moab."
14 Eliseo replicò: "Com'è vero che vive il Signore degli eserciti, davanti al quale sto, non ti darei retta né ti degnerei neppure di uno sguardo, se non fosse per riguardo di Giosafat, re di Giuda.	14 Then Elisha said, "As the LORD of hosts lives, whom I serve, were it not that I respect the king of Judah, I should neither look at you nor notice you at all.
15 Ora conducetemi un suonatore di lira". Mentre il suonatore pizzicava le corde, la mano del Signore fu sopra Eliseo	15 Now get me a minstrel." When the minstrel played, the power of the LORD came upon Elisha
16 che disse: "Così parla il Signore: "Scavate in questa valle numerose fosse".	16 and he announced: "Thus says the LORD, 'Provide many catch basins in this wadi.'
17 Infatti così parla il Signore: "Non vedrete né vento né pioggia; tuttavia questa valle si riempirà di acqua e ne berrete voi, la vostra truppa e le vostre bestie".	17 For the LORD says, 'Though you will see neither wind nor rain, yet this wadi will be filled with water for you, your livestock, and your pack animals to drink.'
18 Ma questo è ancor poco agli occhi del Signore, perché egli darà Moab nelle vostre mani.	18 And since the LORD does not consider this enough, he will also deliver Moab into your grasp.
19 Voi colpirete tutte le città fortificate, abbatterete tutti gli alberi buoni, otturerete tutte le sorgenti d'acqua e disseminerete di sassi i campi migliori".	19 You shall destroy every fortified city, fell every fruit tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every fertile field with stones."
20 Al mattino seguente, nell'ora in cui si fa l'oblazione, sopraggiunse l'acqua dalla parte di Edom e la regione ne fu piena.	20 In the morning, at the time of the sacrifice, water came from the direction of Edom and filled the land.
21 Avendo sentito che i re salivano per muovere loro guerra, i Moabiti convocarono tutti gli uomini capaci di portare le armi e si schierarono alla frontiera.	21 Meanwhile, all Moab heard that the kings had come to give them battle; every man capable of bearing arms was called up and stationed at the border.
22 Levatisi al mattino, quando il sole splendeva sull'acqua, i Moabiti videro di fronte a loro l'acqua rossa come sangue.	22 Early that morning, when the sun shone on the water, the Moabites saw the water at a distance as red as blood.
23 Dissero: "Questo è sangue! Certamente i re sono venuti alle mani e si sono uccisi l'un l'altro. Orsù, Moab, al saccheggio".	23 "This is blood!" they exclaimed. "The kings have fought among themselves and killed one another. Quick! To the spoils, Moabites!"
24 Ma quando giunsero all'accampamento degl'Israeliti, questi si levarono e li batterono. Quei Moabiti poi che tentavano di fuggire davanti a loro, gl'Israeliti li inseguirono e li colpirono.	24 But when they reached the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and attacked the Moabites, who fled from them. They ranged through the countryside striking down the Moabites, and
25 Distrussero le città e gettarono delle pietre, una ciascuno, in tutti i campi migliori, fino a riempirli, ostruirono tutte le sorgenti d'acqua, e abbatterono tutti gli alberi buoni. Rimase soltanto Kir-Careset, che i frombolieri accerchiarono e attaccarono.	25 destroying the cities; each of them cast stones onto every fertile field till they had loaded it down; all the springs they stopped up and every useful tree they felled. Finally only Kir-hareseth was left behind its stone walls, and the slingers had surrounded it and were attacking it.
26 Quando il re di Moab vide che non poteva sostenere il combattimento, prese con sé settecento uomini armati di spada e tentò di aprirsi un varco verso il re di Edom, ma non vi riuscì.	26 When he saw that he was losing the battle, the king of Moab took seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Aram, but he failed.
27 Allora prese il suo figlio primogenito, che doveva regnare al suo posto, e lo immolò in olocausto sulle mura. Ma si scatenò una grande collera contro gl'Israeliti, che si allontanarono da lui e ritornarono al loro paese.	27 So he took his first-born, his heir apparent, and offered him as a holocaust upon the wall. The wrath against Israel was so great that they gave up the siege and returned to their own land.
