| 2 Sichem, figlio di Camor l'eveo, principe di quella regione, la vide e la rapì, giacque con lei e la violentò. | 2 and when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her, he seized her and lay with her and humbled her. |
| 3 E subito l'anima sua si legò a Dina, figlia di Giacobbe; amò quella giovinetta e parlò al cuore di lei. | 3 And his soul was drawn to Dinah the daughter of Jacob; he loved the maiden and spoke tenderly to her. |
| 4 Poi disse a Camor suo padre: "Prendimi in moglie questa ragazza!". | 4 So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, "Get me this maiden for my wife." |
| 5 Intanto Giacobbe aveva sentito che quello aveva disonorato Dina, sua figlia, ma i suoi figlioli erano nella steppa col bestiame, onde Giacobbe tacque fino al loro arrivo. | 5 Now Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah; but his sons were with his cattle in the field, so Jacob held his peace until they came. |
| 6 Venne dunque Camor, padre di Sichem, da Giacobbe per parlar con lui. | 6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him. |
| 7 Frattanto i figli di Giacobbe erano tornati dalla steppa, e, sentito l'accaduto, ne furono addolorati e s'indignarono assai, perché colui aveva commesso un'infamia in Israele, giacendo con la figlia di Giacobbe: così non si doveva fare! | 7 The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard of it; and the men were indignant and very angry, because he had wrought folly in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done. |
| 8 Camor disse loro: "Sichem, mio figlio, è innamorato della vostra figliola: deh, vogliate dargliela in moglie! | 8 But Hamor spoke with them, saying, "The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; I pray you, give her to him in marriage. |
| 9 Anzi, imparentatevi con noi: voi ci darete le vostre figlie e vi prenderete le nostre figlie. | 9 Make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves. |
| 10 Abiterete con noi e la regione sarà a vostra disposizione; risiedetevi, trafficatevi e acquistate in essa delle proprietà". | 10 You shall dwell with us; and the land shall be open to you; dwell and trade in it, and get property in it." |
| 11 Poi parlò Sichem al padre e ai fratelli di lei: "Possa io trovare grazia agli occhi vostri, e vi darò quel che mi direte. | 11 Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will give. |
| 12 Aumentate pure assai a mio carico il prezzo nuziale e il valore del dono, e vi darò quanto mi direte; ma datemi la giovane in moglie!". | 12 Ask of me ever so much as marriage present and gift, and I will give according as you say to me; only give me the maiden to be my wife." |
| 13 Allora i figli di Giacobbe risposero a Sichem e a suo padre Camor, ma parlarono con astuzia perché egli aveva disonorato Dina, loro sorella. | 13 The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully, because he had defiled their sister Dinah. |
| 14 Dissero loro: "Non possiamo fare questa cosa, dare la nostra sorella a un uomo non circonciso, perché ciò sarebbe un disonore per noi. | 14 They said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us. |
| 15 Solo a questa condizione acconsentiremo a voi, se cioè voi diventerete come noi, circoncidendo ogni maschio tra voi. | 15 Only on this condition will we consent to you: that you will become as we are and every male of you be circumcised. |
| 16 Allora noi vi daremo le nostre figlie e ci prenderemo le vostre, abiteremo con voi e diventeremo un sol popolo. | 16 Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to ourselves, and we will dwell with you and become one people. |
| 17 Ma se voi non ci ascoltate quanto al farvi circoncidere, allora prenderemo la nostra figliola e ce ne andremo". | 17 But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter, and we will be gone." |
| 18 Le loro parole piacquero a Camor e a Sichem, suo figlio. | 18 Their words pleased Hamor and Hamor's son Shechem. |
| 19 Il giovane non indugiò a fare la cosa, perché amava la figlia di Giacobbe, e d'altra parte era il più influente di tutto il casato di suo padre. | 19 And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter. Now he was the most honored of all his family. |
| 20 Vennero dunque Camor e suo figlio Sichem alla porta della loro città e dissero agli uomini della loro città: | 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying, |
| 21 "Questi uomini sono gente pacifica con noi: abitino pure nella regione e vi traffichino; tanto, il paese si stende spazioso a loro disposizione; noi potremo prendere per mogli le loro figlie e potremo dare a loro le figlie nostre. | 21 "These men are friendly with us; let them dwell in the land and trade in it, for behold, the land is large enough for them; let us take their daughters in marriage, and let us give them our daughters. |
| 22 Ma questa gente ci mette una sola condizione per abitare con noi e diventare un sol popolo: se cioè ogni nostro maschio tra noi si farà circoncidere come essi stessi sono circoncisi. | 22 Only on this condition will the men agree to dwell with us, to become one people: that every male among us be circumcised as they are circumcised. |
| 23 I loro armenti, la loro ricchezza, e tutto il loro bestiame non saranno forse nostri? Accontentiamoli dunque perché possano abitare con noi!". | 23 Will not their cattle, their property and all their beasts be ours? Only let us agree with them, and they will dwell with us." |
| 24 Allora tutti quelli che uscivano dalla porta della città ascoltarono Camor e Sichem suo figlio, e tutti i maschi, tutti quelli che uscivano dalla porta della propria città, si fecero circoncidere. | 24 And all who went out of the gate of his city hearkened to Hamor and his son Shechem; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city. |
| 25 Or avvenne che al terzo giorno, quand'essi erano sofferenti, i due figli di Giacobbe, Simeone e Levi, fratelli di Dina, presero ciascuno la propria spada, assalirono la città, che si teneva sicura, e uccisero tutti i maschi. | 25 On the third day, when they were sore, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and came upon the city unawares, and killed all the males. |
| 26 Passarono così a fil di spada Camor e suo figlio Sichem, portarono via Dina dalla casa di Sichem e uscirono. | 26 They slew Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went away. |
| 27 I figli di Giacobbe si buttarono sugli uccisi e saccheggiarono la città, perché quelli avevano disonorato la loro sorella. | 27 And the sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled; |
| 28 Presero così i loro greggi, i loro armenti, i loro asini e tutto quello che vi era nella città e nella campagna. | 28 they took their flocks and their herds, their asses, and whatever was in the city and in the field; |
| 29 Portarono via come bottino tutte le loro proprietà, tutti i loro piccoli e le loro donne e saccheggiarono tutto quanto v'era nelle case. | 29 all their wealth, all their little ones and their wives, all that was in the houses, they captured and made their prey. |
| 30 Allora Giacobbe disse a Simeone e a Levi: "Voi mi avete messo in affanno, rendendomi odioso agli abitanti della regione, ai Cananei e ai Perizziti, mentre io ho pochi uomini; essi si raduneranno contro di me, mi vinceranno e sarò annientato io e la mia famiglia". | 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me odious to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites; my numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household." |
| 31 Risposero: "Si doveva trattare la nostra sorella come una meretrice?". | 31 But they said, "Should he treat our sister as a harlot?" |
