Unto the end. For those who will be changed. To the sons of Korah, toward understanding. A Canticle for the Beloved.1 [For the choirmaster Of the sons of Korah Poem] God, we have heard for ourselves, our ancestorshave told us, of the deeds you did in their days, in days of old,
My heart has uttered a good word. I speak of my works to the king. My tongue is like the pen of a scribe who writes quickly.2 by your hand. To establish them in the land you drove out nations, to make room for them you harriedpeoples.
You are a brilliant form before the sons of men. Grace has been poured freely into your lips. Because of this, God has blessed you in eternity.3 It was not their own sword that won the land, nor their own arms which made them victorious, but yourhand it was and your arm, and the light of your presence, for you loved them.
Fasten your sword to your thigh, O most powerful one.4 You are my king, my God, who decreed Jacob's victories;
With your splendor and your excellence extended, proceed prosperously, and reign for the sake of truth and meekness and justice, and so will your right hand lead you wondrously.5 through you we conquered our opponents, in your name we trampled down those who rose up againstus.
Your arrows are sharp; the people will fall under you, with the hearts of the enemies of the king.6 For my trust was not in my bow, my victory was not won by my sword;
Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of true aim.7 it was you who saved us from our opponents, you who put to shame those who hate us.
You have loved justice and hated iniquity. Because of this, God, your God, has anointed you, before your co-heirs, with the oil of gladness.8 Our boast was always of God, we praised your name without ceasing.Pause
Myrrh and balsam and cinnamon perfume your garments, from the houses of ivory. From these, they have delighted you:9 Yet now you have abandoned and humiliated us, you no longer take the field with our armies,
the daughters of kings in your honor. The queen assisted at your right hand, in clothing of gold, encircled with diversity.10 you leave us to fall back before the enemy, those who hate us plunder us at wil .
Listen, daughter, and see, and incline your ear. And forget your people and your father’s house.11 You hand us over like sheep for slaughter, you scatter us among the nations,
And the king will desire your beauty. For he is the Lord your God, and they will adore him.12 you sell your people for a trifle and make no profit on the sale.
And the daughters of Tyre will entreat your countenance with gifts: all the rich men of the people.13 You make us the butt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those around us,
All the glory of the daughter of its king is inside, in golden fringes,14 you make us a by-word among nations, other peoples shake their heads over us.
clothed all around with diversities. After her, virgins will be led to the king. Her neighbors will be brought to you.15 Al day long I brood on my disgrace, the shame written clear on my face,
They will be brought with gladness and exultation. They will be led into the temple of the king.16 from the sound of insult and abuse, from the sight of hatred and vengefulness.
For your fathers, sons have been born to you. You will establish them as leaders over all the earth.17 Al this has befal en us though we had not forgotten you, nor been disloyal to your covenant,
They will remember your name always, for generation after generation. Because of this, people will confess to you in eternity, even forever and ever.18 our hearts never turning away, our feet never straying from your path.
Yet you have crushed us in the place where jackals live, and immersed us in shadow dark as death.
Had we forgotten the name of our God and stretched out our hands to a foreign god,
would not God have found this out, for he knows the secrets of the heart?
For your sake we are being massacred all day long, treated as sheep to be slaughtered.
Wake, Lord! Why are you asleep? Awake! Do not abandon us for good.
Why do you turn your face away, forgetting that we are poor and harrassed?
For we are bowed down to the dust, and lie prone on the ground.
Arise! Come to our help! Ransom us, as your faithful love demands.
