1 Satan took his stand against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.	1 Or Satana si levò contro Israele, ed incitò David a fare il censimento d'Israele.
2 David said to Joab and the people's princes, 'Go, and take a census of Israel, from Beersheba to Dan,then bring it back to me and let me know the total.'	2 E David disse a Gioab e ai capi del popolo: « Andate a fare il censimento d'I­sraele da Bersabee sino a Dan e portatemene poi il risultato, chè voglio saperlo ».
3 Joab replied, 'May Yahweh multiply his people to a hundred times what they are today! But my lordking, are they not all my lord's servants in any case? Why should my lord insist on this? Why should he involveIsrael in guilt?'	3 Gioab rispose: « Il Signore moltiplichi cento volte più di quello che è il suo popolo; ma non son essi tutti tuoi servi, o re mio signore? Per qual motivo il mio signore cerca una cosa che sarà imputata a peccato a Israele? »
4 But the king enforced his order on Joab, and Joab set out, travelled throughout al Israel, and thenreturned to Jerusalem.	4 Ma, prevalso l'ordine del re, Gioab andò e, fatto il giro di tutto Israele, tornò a Gerusalemme
5 Joab gave David the census results for the people: al Israel had eleven hundred thousand men whocould wield a sword; Judah had four hundred and seventy thousand men who could wield a sword.	5 a dare a David la cifra di tutti quelli che aveva numerati. Il risultato fu che il numero totale d'Israele era un milione e cento mila uomini atti a maneggiar la spada, e quel di Giuda era di quattrocento settanta mila combattenti.
6 Joab had found the king's command so distasteful that he did not include Levi and Benjamin.	6 Or Gioab non numerò nè Levi, nè Beniamino, perchè eseguiva di mala voglia l'ordine del re.
7 God looked with displeasure on this and punished Israel in consequence.	7 Infatti ciò che il re aveva ordinato dispiacque a Dio, il quale percosse Israele.
8 David then said to God, 'I have committed a grave sin by doing this. But now I beg you to forgive yourservant for this fault, for I have acted very foolishly.'	8 Allora David disse a Dio: « Facendo questo ho gravemente peccato: ti prego, cancella l'iniquità del tuo servo, perchè io ho agito stoltamente! »
9 Yahweh then spoke to Gad, David's seer,	9 E il Signore parlò a Gad, veggente di David, in questi termini:
10 'Go and say to David, "Yahweh says this: I offer you three things; choose which one of them I am toinflict on you." '	10 «Va a parlare a David, e digli: Così dice il Signore: ti concedo di scegliere fra tre cose: scegline una, quella che vorrai, ed io te la farò ».
11 So Gad went to David and said, 'Yahweh says this,	11 Gad andò a presentarsi a David e gli disse: « Ecco quel che dice il Si­gnore: scegli quel che vorrai:
12 "Take your choice between three years of famine; or three months of disaster at the hands of yourenemies, with your enemies' sword overtaking you; or three days of Yahweh's sword, an epidemic in the country,while the angel of Yahweh wreaks havoc throughout the territory of Israel." Now decide how I am to answer himwho sends me.'	12 O la fame per tre anni, o d'andar per tre mesi fuggendo i tuoi nemici, senza poter evitare la loro spada, o che per tre giorni la spada del Signore e la peste stiano nel paese e l'angelo del Signore faccia strage in tutto il territorio d'Israele. Or dunque guarda quel che devo rispondere a chi mi ha mandato ».
13 David said to Gad, 'I am very apprehensive. Better for me to fal into Yahweh's hand, since hismercies are very great, than for me to fal into the hands of human enemies.'	13 David rispose a Gad: « L'angoscia m'opprime da ogni parte; ma per me è meglio cadere nelle mani del Signore (chè grandi ne sono le misericordie) che cader nelle mani degli uomini ».
14 So Yahweh unleashed an epidemic on Israel, and seventy thousand Israelites succumbed.	14 Allora il Si­gnore mandò in Israele la peste e perirono d'Israele settanta mila uomini.
15 Next, God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, Yahwehlooked down and felt sorry about the calamity; and he said to the destroying angel, 'Enough now! Hold yourhand!' The angel of Yahweh was standing by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.	15 Mandò inoltre un angelo in Gerusalemme a colpirla. Mentre essa era colpita, il Si­gnore gettò su lei lo sguardo e, avendo compassione di tanto male, comandò all'angelo sterminatore: « Basta: or ferma la tua mano ». L'angelo del Signore stava in piedi presso l'aia di Ornan Gebuseo.
16 David, raising his eyes, saw the angel of Yahweh standing between earth and heaven, a drawnsword in his hand stretched out towards Jerusalem. David and the elders then put on sackcloth and fel on theirfaces,	16 David, alzando gli occhi, vide l'angelo del Signore che stava in piedi fra il cielo e la terra e teneva in mano una spada sguainata, volta verso Gerusalemme; e tanto lui che gli anziani, vestiti di sacco, caddero bocconi per terra.
17 and David said to God, 'Did I not order the people to be counted? I was the one who sinned andactual y committed the wrong. But these, the flock, what have they done? Yahweh my God, let your hand lieheavy on me and on my family; but spare your people from the plague!'	17 E David disse a Dio: « Non son io che ordinai il censimento del popolo? Son io che ho peccato, io che ho fatto il male; ma questo gregge che ha meritato ? Signore Dio mio, si volga, ti prego, la tua mano contro di me e contro la casa di mio padre; ma non sia percosso il tuo popolo ».
18 The angel of Yahweh then ordered Gad to tel David that David should go up and erect an altar toYahweh on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.	18 Allora l'angelo del Signore comandò a Gad di dire a David che salisse a edificare un'altare al Signore Dio nell'aia di Ornan Gebuseo.
19 So, at Gad's bidding, given in Yahweh's name, David went up.	19 David adunque salì, secondo la parola che Gad gli aveva detta a nome del Signore.
20 Ornan had turned round and seen the angel, and he and his four sons with him had hidden.	20 Ma Ornan, avendo alzati gli occhi, veduto l'angelo, si nascose con i suoi quattro figli. In quel momento era a battere il grano nell'aia.
21 When David arrived Ornan was threshing wheat. He looked up and saw David and came off thethreshing-floor and prostrated himself on the ground at David's feet.	21 Or mentre David si recava da Ornan, questi lo vide, e dall'aia gli mosse incontro e, prostrandosi per terra, lo adorò.
22 David then said to Ornan, 'Let me have the site of the threshing-floor, so that I can build an altar toYahweh on it; let me have it at the ful price -- so that the plague may be lifted from the people.' Ornan said toDavid,	22 David gli disse: « Dammi lo spazio della tua aia per edificarvi un altare, e ricevine il prezzo in danari, affinchè sia allontanata dal popolo questa piaga ».
23 'Take it, and let my lord the king do what he thinks fit. Look, I shal give you the oxen for burntofferings, the threshing-sleds for the wood and the wheat for the oblation. I shal give everything.'	23 Ornan disse a David: « Prendilo: il re mio signore ne faccia quel che gli piace: anzi do anche i buoi per l'olocausto, le trebbie per il legno, e il grano pel sacrifizio: do tutto e volentieri ».
24 'No,' said King David to Ornan, 'I insist on buying it at the ful price. I wil not offer Yahweh whatbelongs to you or bring burnt offerings which have cost me nothing.'	24 Il re David gli disse: « No: io darò tanto danaro quanto vale, perchè io non debbo togliere a te per offrire al Signore olocausti che non mi costan nulla ».
25 So David gave Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the site.	25 Così David diede ad Ornan per quel luogo seicento sicli d'oro di giusto peso.
26 There David built an altar to Yahweh and brought burnt offerings and peace offerings. He called onYahweh, and Yahweh answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.	26 Poi, edificatovi un altare al Signore, offirì olocausti e ostie pacifiche, e invocò il Signore, il quale lo esaudi, mandando fuoco dal cielo sull'altare dell'olocausto.
27 Then Yahweh ordered the angel to sheathe his sword.	27 Il Signore comandò all'angelo, e que­sti rimise la sua spada nel fodero.
28 Whereupon, seeing that Yahweh had answered him on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite,David offered sacrifice there.	28 Allora David, vedendo che il Signore l'aveva esaudito nell'aia di Ornan Gebuseo, subito v'immolò delle vittime.
29 The Dwel ing which Moses had made in the desert and the altar of burnt offering were at that time onthe high place at Gibeon,	29 Il Tabernacolo del Signore, che Mosè aveva fatto nel deserto, e l'altare degli olocausti in quel tempo erano sull'alto luogo di Gabaon;
30 but David could not go there to consult God because he was terrified of the angel's sword.	30 ma David non ebbe la forza per andare a quell'altare a pregarvi il Signore, perchè al vedere la spada dell'angelo del Signore era stato colpito da troppo grande spavento.
