Sirach 18

1 The Eternal is the judge of all things without exception; the LORD alone is just.	1 Colui, che vive in eterno, creò tutte insieme le cose. Iddio solo sarà riconosciuto giusto, ed egli è il Re invincibile, che sussiste in eterno.
2 Whom has he made equal to describing his works, and who can probe his mighty deeds?	2 Chi è capace di raccontare le opere fatte da lui?
3 Who can measure his majestic power, or exhaust the tale of his mercies?	3 Ma chi può penetrare le sue meraviglie?
4 One cannot lessen, nor increase, nor penetrate the wonders of the LORD.	4 E la onnipotente grandezza di lui chi mai la spiegherà? O chi tenterà di riferire le sue misericordie?
5 When a man ends he is only beginning, and when he stops he is still bewildered.	5 Nulla v'è da levare, né da aggiungere alle mirabili opere di Dio, e queste sono incomprensibili.
6 What is man, of what worth is he? the good, the evil in him, what are these?	6 Quando l'uomo avrà finito, allora sarà da capo, e quando si fermerà, sarà, nell'incertezza.
7 The sum of a man's days is great if it reaches a hundred years:	7 Che è l'uomo? ed a che può egli esser utile? e che è il bene, o il male di lui?
8 Like a drop of sea water, like a grain of sand, so are these few years among the days of eternity.	8 Il numero de' giorni dell'uomo al più di cento anni: come una goccia di acqua marina, e come un granello d'arena, così son questi pochi anni al di dell'eternità.
9 That is why the LORD is patient with men and showers upon them his mercy.	9 Per questo il Signore è paziente con essi, e versa sopra di loro la sua misericordia.
10 He sees and understands that their death is grievous, and so he forgives them all the more.	10 Vede egli la presunzione del loro cuore cattiva, e la perdizione loro, che è deplorabile.
11 Man may be merciful to his fellow man, but the LORD'S mercy reaches all flesh,	11 Per questo una piena benignità, usa con essi, e mostra loro la via dell'equità.
12 Reproving, admonishing, teaching, as a shepherd guides his flock;	12 La compassione dell'uomo è verso il suo prossimo; ma la misericordia di Dio ad ogni carne si estende.
13 Merciful to those who accept his guidance, who are diligent in his precepts.	13 Egli ha misericordia, e gli ammaestra, e li guida come fa un pastor col suo gregge.
14 My son, to your charity add no reproach, nor spoil any gift by harsh words.	14 Egli è benigno con quegli, che ascoltano il magistero della misericordia, e sono solleciti nell'eseguire i suoi precetti.
15 Like dew that abates a burning wind, so does a word improve a gift.	15 Figliuolo, non aggiugnere al benefizio i rimproveri, e al dono, che tu facci, non unire l'asprezza di male parole.
16 Sometimes the word means more than the gift; both are offered by a kindly man.	16 Non è egli vero, che la rugiada tempera il caldo? così pure la buona parola vai più del dono.
17 Only a fool upbraids before giving; a grudging gift wears out the expectant eyes.	17 Non vedi tu, che la parola vai più del dono? ma l'uomo giusto ha l'una, e l'altra cosa.
18 Be informed before speaking; before sickness prepare the cure.	18 Lo stolto fa degli odiosi rimproveri, e il dono dell'uomo mal costumato fa strugger gli occhi.
19 Before you are judged, seek merit for yourself, and at the time of visitation you will have a ransom.	19 Prima del giudizio assicurati di tua giustizia, e prima di parlare, impara.
20 Before you have fallen, humble yourself; when you have sinned, show repentance.	20 Prima di cadere in languore prendi la medicina, e prima del giudizio disamina te stesso, e dinanzi a Dio troverai misericordia.
21 Delay not to forsake sins, neglect it not till you are in distress.	21 Prima di cader nella malattia umiliati, e nel tempo di tua infermità fa conoscere la tua conversione.
22 Let nothing prevent the prompt payment of your vows; wait not to fulfill them when you are dying.	22 Nissuna cosa ti ritenga dal sempre orare, e non dubitare di far opere di giustizia fino alla morte: perocché la mercede di Dio dura in eterno.
23 Before making a vow have the means to fulfill it; be not one who tries the LORD.	23 Prima dell'orazione prepara l'anima tua, non essere come uno, che tenti Dio.
24 Think of wrath and the day of death, the time of vengeance when he will hide his face.	24 Ricordati dell'ira (che verrà) nel di finale, e del tempo della retribuzione, quando (Dio) cangerà di visaggio.
25 Remember the time of hunger in the time of plenty, poverty and want in the day of wealth.	25 Ricordati della povertà nel tempo di abbondanza, e delle miserie della povertà nel tempo di ricchezza.
26 Between morning and evening the weather changes; before the LORD all things are fleeting.	26 Dal mattino alla sera il tempo si cambierà, e tutto quesio si fa ben presto sotto gli occhi di Dio.
27 A wise man is circumspect in all things; when sin is rife he keeps himself from wrongdoing.	27 L'uomo saggio teme di tutto; e ne' giorni de' peccati si guarderà dalla negligenza.
28 Any learned man should make wisdom known, and he who attains to her should declare her praise;	28 Ogni uomo sensato sa distinguere la saggezza, e da lode a chi l'ha trovata.
29 Those trained in her words must show their wisdom, dispensing sound proverbs like life-giving waters.	29 Gli uomini giudiziosi si diportano con prudenza nel parlare, e intendono la verità, e la giustizia, e spargono quasi pioggia proverbi, e sentenze.
30 Go not after your lusts, but keep your desires in check.	30 Non andar dietro alle tue cupidità, e raffrena i tuoi appetiti.
31 If you satisfy your lustful appetites they will make you the sport of your enemies.	31 Se soddisfarai le cupidità dell'anima tua, ella farà, che abbian di te allegrezza i tuoi nemici.
32 Have no joy in the pleasures of a moment which bring on poverty redoubled;	32 Non prender piacere ai tumulti, anche di piccol momento; perocché vi ai trovano conflitti perpetui.
33 Become not a glutton and a winebibber with nothing in your purse.	33 Guardati dall'impoverire prendendo a usura per contendere, mentre hai vuoto il sacchetto; perocché saresti ingiusto contro la tua propria vita.
