Sirach 18

1 The Eternal is the judge of all things without exception; the LORD alone is just.	1 Colui che vive per sempre ha creato l'intero universo.
2 Whom has he made equal to describing his works, and who can probe his mighty deeds?	2 Il Signore soltanto è riconosciuto giusto.
3 Who can measure his majestic power, or exhaust the tale of his mercies?	3 A nessuno è possibile svelare le sue opere e chi può indagare le sue grandezze?
4 One cannot lessen, nor increase, nor penetrate the wonders of the LORD.	4 La potenza della sua maestà chi potrà misurarla? Chi riuscirà a narrare le sue misericordie?
5 When a man ends he is only beginning, and when he stops he is still bewildered.	5 Non c'è nulla da togliere e nulla da aggiungere; non è possibile indagare le meraviglie del Signore.
6 What is man, of what worth is he? the good, the evil in him, what are these?	6 Quando uno ha finito, allora comincia; quando si ferma, allora rimane perplesso.
7 The sum of a man's days is great if it reaches a hundred years:	7 Che è l'uomo? E a che può servire? Qual è il suo bene e qual è il suo male?
8 Like a drop of sea water, like a grain of sand, so are these few years among the days of eternity.	8 Quanto al numero dei giorni dell'uomo, cento anni sono già molti.
9 That is why the LORD is patient with men and showers upon them his mercy.	9 Come una goccia d'acqua nel mare e un grano di sabbia così questi pochi anni in un giorno dell'eternità.
10 He sees and understands that their death is grievous, and so he forgives them all the more.	10 Per questo il Signore è paziente con gli uomini e riversa su di essi la sua misericordia.
11 Man may be merciful to his fellow man, but the LORD'S mercy reaches all flesh,	11 Vede e conosce che la loro sorte è misera, per questo moltiplica il perdono.
12 Reproving, admonishing, teaching, as a shepherd guides his flock;	12 La misericordia dell'uomo riguarda il prossimo, la misericordia del Signore ogni essere vivente.
13 Merciful to those who accept his guidance, who are diligent in his precepts.	13 Egli rimprovera, corregge, ammaestra e guida come un pastore il suo gregge.
14 My son, to your charity add no reproach, nor spoil any gift by harsh words.	14 Ha pietà di quanti accettano la dottrina e di quanti sono zelanti per le sue decisioni.
15 Like dew that abates a burning wind, so does a word improve a gift.	15 Figlio, ai benefici non aggiungere il rimprovero, e a ogni dono parole amare.
16 Sometimes the word means more than the gift; both are offered by a kindly man.	16 La rugiada non mitiga forse il calore? Così una parola è più pregiata del dono.
17 Only a fool upbraids before giving; a grudging gift wears out the expectant eyes.	17 Ecco, non vale una parola più di un ricco dono? L'uomo caritatevole offre l'una e l'altro.
18 Be informed before speaking; before sickness prepare the cure.	18 Lo stolto rimprovera senza riguardo, il dono dell'invidioso fa languire gli occhi.
19 Before you are judged, seek merit for yourself, and at the time of visitation you will have a ransom.	19 Prima di parlare, impara; curati ancor prima di ammalarti.
20 Before you have fallen, humble yourself; when you have sinned, show repentance.	20 Prima del giudizio esamina te stesso, così al momento del verdetto troverai perdono.
21 Delay not to forsake sins, neglect it not till you are in distress.	21 Umìliati, prima di cadere malato, e quando hai peccato, mostra il pentimento.
22 Let nothing prevent the prompt payment of your vows; wait not to fulfill them when you are dying.	22 Nulla ti impedisca di soddisfare a tempo un voto, non aspettare fino alla morte per sdebitarti.
23 Before making a vow have the means to fulfill it; be not one who tries the LORD.	23 Prima di fare un voto prepara te stesso, non fare come un uomo che tenta il Signore.
24 Think of wrath and the day of death, the time of vengeance when he will hide his face.	24 Pensa all'ira del giorno della morte, al tempo della vendetta, quando egli distoglierà lo sguardo da te.
25 Remember the time of hunger in the time of plenty, poverty and want in the day of wealth.	25 Pensa alla carestia nel tempo dell'abbondanza; alla povertà e all'indigenza nei giorni di ricchezza.
26 Between morning and evening the weather changes; before the LORD all things are fleeting.	26 Dal mattino alla sera il tempo cambia; e tutto è effimero davanti al Signore.
27 A wise man is circumspect in all things; when sin is rife he keeps himself from wrongdoing.	27 Un uomo saggio è circospetto in ogni cosa; nei giorni del peccato si astiene dalla colpa.
28 Any learned man should make wisdom known, and he who attains to her should declare her praise;	28 Ogni uomo assennato conosce la sapienza e a colui che l'ha trovata rende omaggio.
29 Those trained in her words must show their wisdom, dispensing sound proverbs like life-giving waters.	29 Quelli istruiti nel parlare anch'essi diventano saggi, fanno piovere massime eccellenti.
30 Go not after your lusts, but keep your desires in check.	30 Non seguire le passioni; poni un freno ai tuoi desideri.
31 If you satisfy your lustful appetites they will make you the sport of your enemies.	31 Se ti concedi la soddisfazione della passione, essa ti renderà oggetto di scherno ai tuoi nemici.
32 Have no joy in the pleasures of a moment which bring on poverty redoubled;	32 Non godere una vita di piaceri, sua conseguenza è una doppia povertà.
33 Become not a glutton and a winebibber with nothing in your purse.	33 Non impoverire scialacquando con denaro preso a prestito, quando non hai nulla nella borsa.
