| 1 Giacomo servo di Dio, e del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo, alle dodici tribù disperse, salute. | 1 James, a servant of God and of the LORD Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes in the dispersion: Greeting. |
| 2 Abbiate, fratelli miei come argomento di vero gaudio le varie tentazioni, nelle quali urterete: | 2 Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, |
| 3 Sapendo, come Io sperimento della vostra fede produce la pazienza. | 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. |
| 4 La pazienza poi fa opera perfetta: onde voi siate perfetti, e intieri, e in nulla cosa manchevoli. | 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. |
| 5 Che se alcuno di voi è bisognoso di sapienza, la chieda a Dio, che da a tutti abbondantemente, e noi rimprovera: esaragli conceduta. | 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all men generously and without reproaching, and it will be given him. |
| 6 Ma chieda con fede senza niente esitare: imperocché chi esita, egli è simile al flutto del mare mosso, e agitato dal vento: | 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. |
| 7 Non si pensi adunque un tal uomo di ottener cosa alcuna dal Signore. | 7 For that person must not suppose that a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways, will receive anything from the Lord. |
| 8 L'uomo di animo doppio egli è incostante in tutti i suoi andamenti. | 8 . |
| 9 Or il fratello, che è in basso stato, faccia gloria del suo innalzamento: | 9 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, |
| 10 Il ricco poi della sua umiliazione, perché come fior d'erba ci passerà: | 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like the flower of the grass he will pass away. |
| 11 Imperocché si levò il sole cocente, e l'erba si seccò, e il fior ne cadde, e la venustà dell'aspetto di lui perì: cosi anche il ricco ne' suoi avanzamenti appassirà. | 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits. |
| 12 Beato l'uomo, che tollera tentazione: perché quando sarà stato provato, riceverà la corona di vita promessa da Dio a quegli, che lo amano. | 12 Blessed is the man who endures trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him. |
| 13 Nissuno quand'è tentato, dica, che è tentato da Dio: imperocché Dio non è tentatore di cose male: ed ei non tenta nissuno. | 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted with evil and he himself tempts no one; |
| 14 Ma ciascuno è tentato dalla propria concupiscenza, che lo tragge, e lo alletta. | 14 but each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. |
| 15 Indi la concupiscenza quando ha conceputo, partorisce il peccato: il peccato poi consumato che sia, genera la morte. | 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin; and sin when it is full-grown brings forth death. |
| 16 Non vogliate adunque ingannarvi, fratelli miei dilettissimi. | 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. |
| 17 Ogni buon dato, e ogni perfetto dono viene di sopra, scendendo da quel Padre de' lumi, in cui non è mutamento, né alternativa di adombramento. | 17 Every good endowment and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. |
| 18 Imperocché egli per sua volontà ci generò per la partita di verità: affinchè noi siamo quali primizie delle sue creature. | 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. |
| 19 Voi lo sapete, fratelli miei dilettissimi. Or sia ogni uomo pronto ad ascoltare; lento a parlare, e lento all'ira: | 19 Know this, my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, |
| 20 Imperocché l'ira dell'uomo non adempie la giustizia di Dio. | 20 for the anger of man does not work the righteousness of God. |
| 21 Per la qual cosa rigettando ogni immondezza, e la ridondante malizia, con mansueto animo abbracciate la parola (in voi) innestata, la quale può salvare le anime vostre. | 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rank growth of wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. |
| 22 Siate perciò facitori della parola, e non uditori solamente, ingannando voi stessi. | 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. |
| 23 Imperocché se uno è uditore, e non facitore della parola, ei si rassomiglierà a un uomo, che considera il nativo suo volto ad uno specchio: | 23 For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who observes his natural face in a mirror; |
| 24 Il quale considerato che si è, se ne va, e si scorda subita, qual ei si fosse. | 24 for he observes himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. |
| 25 Ma chi mirerà addentro nella perfetta legge della libertà, e in essa persevererà, non essendo uditore smemorato, ma facitore di opere: questi nel suo fare sarà beato. | 25 But he who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer that forgets but a doer that acts, he shall be blessed in his doing. |
| 26 Che se uno si crede di essere religioso, senza raffrenare la propria lingua, anzi seducendo il proprio cuore, la religione di costui è vana. | 26 If any one thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this man's religion is vain. |
| 27 Religione para, e immacolata nel cospetto di Dio, e del Padre, è questa: di visitare i pupilli, e le vedove nella loro tribolazione, e di conservarsi puro da questo secolo. | 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. |
