| 1 Ora io stesso Paolo vi scongiuro per la mansuetudine, e modestia di Cristo, io, che in faccia sono umile tra di voi, assente poi sono ardito con voi. | 1 I, Paul, myself entreat you, by the meekness and gentleness of Christ--I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold to you when I am away!-- |
| 2 Vi supplico adunque, che non abbia io presente ad agire arditamente con quella franchezza, per la quale sono creduto ardito, contro certuni, i quali fan concetto di noi quasi camminiamo secondo la carne. | 2 I beg of you that when I am present I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of acting in worldly fashion. |
| 3 Imperocché camminando noi nella carne, non militiamo secondo la carne. | 3 For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war, |
| 4 Imperocché le armi della nostra milizia non sono carnali, ma potenti in Dio a distruggere le fortificazioni, distruggendo noi le macchinazioni, | 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds. |
| 5 E qualunque altura, che si innalza contro la scienza di Dio, e in servaggio conducendo ogni intelletto all'ubbidienza di Cristo, | 5 We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, |
| 6 E avendo in mano onde prender vendetta di ogni disubbidienza, quando sarà perfezionata la vostra ubbidienza. | 6 being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete. |
| 7 Badate all'apparenza. Se taluno dentro di se confida di essere di Cristo, pensi vicendevolmente dentro di se, che com'egli è di Cristo, cosi anche noi. | 7 Look at what is before your eyes. If any one is confident that he is Christs, let him remind himself that as he is Christs, so are we. |
| 8 Imperocché quand' anche mi gloriassi un poco più della potestà nostra, la quale il Signore ci ha dato per vostra edificazione, e non per distruzione, non ne arrossirei. | 8 For even if I boast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I shall not be put to shame. |
| 9 Ma affinchè io non sia creduta quasi sbalordirvi con le lettere: | 9 I would not seem to be frightening you with letters. |
| 10 Imperocché le lettere (dicono essi) elle sono gravi, e robuste: ma la presenza del corpo è meschina, e il discorso non val nulla: | 10 For they say, "His letters are weighty and strong, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech of no account." |
| 11 Pensi chi dice cosi, che quali siamo a parole per lettera in assenza, tali ancor (siamo) a' fatti in presenza. | 11 Let such people understand that what we say by letter when absent, we do when present. |
| 12 Imperocché non abbiamo ardire di metterci in mazzo, o di paragonarci con certuni, i quali da loro stessi si celebrano: ma noi misuriamo noi stessi con noi medesimi, e con noi stessi ci paragoniamo. | 12 Not that we venture to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another, and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding. |
| 13 Noi però non ci glorieremo formisura, ma giusta la maniera di misura che Dio ci ha dato in sorte, misura da arrivare sino a voi. | 13 But we will not boast beyond limit, but will keep to the limits God has apportioned us, to reach even to you. |
| 14 Imperocché non, quasi non fossimo arrivati sino a voi, ci siamo stesi oltre i limiti: imperocché sino a voi pure siamo arrivati col vangelo di Cristo: | 14 For we are not overextending ourselves, as though we did not reach you; we were the first to come all the way to you with the gospel of Christ. |
| 15 Non gloriandoci formisura sopra le altrui fatiche: ma sperando, che crescendo la vostra fede, saremo tra di voi ingranditi nella nostra misura ampiamente, | 15 We do not boast beyond limit, in other men's labors; but our hope is that as your faith increases, our field among you may be greatly enlarged, |
| 16 Porteremo il vangelo anche ne' luoghi, che sono di là da voi, non ci glorieremo di ciò, che è coltivato dentro la misura assegnata ad altri. | 16 so that we may preach the gospel in lands beyond you, without boasting of work already done in another's field. |
| 17 Per altro chi si gloria, nel Signore si glorj. | 17 "Let him who boasts, boast of the Lord." |
| 18 Imperocché non è provato chi se stesso commenda: ma quegli, cui Iddio commenda. | 18 For it is not the man who commends himself that is accepted, but the man whom the Lord commends. |
