| 1 Udite la parola del Signore voi, figliuoli d'Israele; perocché il Signore viene a far giudizio degli abitatori di questa terra; perocché non è verità, e non è misericordia, perchè non è scienza di Dio sulla terra. | 1 Hear the word of the LORD, O people of Israel; for the LORD has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land. There is no faithfulness or kindness, and no knowledge of God in the land; |
| 2 La bestemmia, e la menzogna, e l'omicidio, e il furto, e l'adulterio la hanno inondata, e il sangue incalza il sangue. | 2 there is swearing, lying, killing, stealing, and committing adultery; they break all bounds and murder follows murder. |
| 3 Per questo la terra sarà in pianto, e tutti i suoi abitanti saranno in languore, e le bestie della campagna, e gli uccelli dell'aria, e i pesci stessi dei mare periranno. | 3 Therefore the land mourns, and all who dwell in it languish, and also the beasts of the field, and the birds of the air; and even the fish of the sea are taken away. |
| 4 Nissuno però faccia rimprovero, ovver correzione ad alcuno; perocché il popol tuo è come chi sta a tu per tu col sacerdote. | 4 Yet let no one contend, and let none accuse, for with you is my contention, O priest. |
| 5 Ma tu oggi anderai in rovina, e teco anderà in rovina il profeta. In quella notte farò tacere la madre tua. | 5 You shall stumble by day, the prophet also shall stumble with you by night; and I will destroy your mother. |
| 6 Il mio popolo è rimaso muto, per chè era privo di scienza. Perchè tu rigettasti la scienza, per questo io ti rigetterò, affinchè tu non eserciti il mio sacerdozio. Tu poi ti se' scordata della legge del tuo Dio, ed io pure mi scorderò dei miei figliuoli. | 6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. |
| 7 Più si son eglino moltiplicati e più son cresciuti i loro peccati: io cangerò in ignominia la gloria loro. | 7 The more they increased, the more they sinned against me; I will change their glory into shame. |
| 8 Mangiano i peccati del popolo mio, e mentre egli pecca gli fan coraggio. | 8 They feed on the sin of my people; they are greedy for their iniquity. |
| 9 Onde qual è il popolo, tal sarà il sacerdote, e io punirò sopra di lui, le sue azioni, e renderò a lui la mercede de suoi pensamenti. | 9 And it shall be like people, like priest; I will punish them for their ways, and requite them for their deeds. |
| 10 Ei mangeranno, e non si satolleranno: hanno prevaricato senza darsi mai posa: hanno abbandonato il Signore, non osservando la legge. | 10 They shall eat, but not be satisfied; they shall play the harlot, but not multiply; because they have forsaken the LORD to cherish harlotry. |
| 11 L'impudicizia, il vino, e l'ubbriachezza tolgono il bene dell'intelletto. | 11 Wine and new wine take away the understanding. |
| 12 Il mio popolo ha consultato un pezzo di legno, e le sue bacchette han predetto a lui il futuro: perocché lo spirito di fornicazione gli ha affascinati, ed hanno voltate le spalle al Dio loro. | 12 My people inquire of a thing of wood, and their staff gives them oracles. For a spirit of harlotry has led them astray, and they have left their God to play the harlot. |
| 13 Sulle vette dei monti offersero sagrifizj, e sulle colline abbruciarono i timiami, e sotto la quercia, e sotto il pioppo, e sotto il terebinto, perchè l'ombra di essi era gradita: per questo le vostre figliuole faran getto del loro onore, e le vostre spose saranno adultere. | 13 They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains, and make offerings upon the hills, under oak, poplar, and terebinth, because their shade is good. Therefore your daughters play the harlot, and your brides commit adultery. |
| 14 Io non gastigherò le vostre figliuole, quando avranno peccato, né le vostre spose, quando saran diventate adultere: perocché costoro conversavano colle meretrici, e andavano a far sagrifizio con gli effeminati. Per la qual cosa questo popolo senza intelletto sarà percosso. | 14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the harlot, nor your brides when they commit adultery; for the men themselves go aside with harlots, and sacrifice with cult prostitutes, and a people without understanding shall come to ruin. |
| 15 Giacché tu, o Israele, ti se' dato alla fornicazione, non pecchi almeno Giuda or non vogliate entrare in Galgal, e non salite a Bethaven, e non fate quel giuramento: Vive il Signore. | 15 Though you play the harlot, O Israel, let not Judah become guilty. Enter not into Gilgal, nor go up to Beth-aven, and swear not, "As the LORD lives." |
| 16 Perocché Israele è uscito di strada come una vacca indomita: adesso il Signore lo menerà a pascere come un agnello in ispaziosa campagna. | 16 Like a stubborn heifer, Israel is stubborn; can the LORD now feed them like a lamb in a broad pasture? |
| 17 Ephraim ha fatta società cogl'idoli: lascialo stare. | 17 Ephraim is joined to idols, let him alone. |
| 18 Egli ha a parte i suoi conviti, è caduto nella più orrenda fornicazione: i suoi protettori hanno amata la sua ignominia. | 18 A band of drunkards, they give themselves to harlotry; they love shame more than their glory. |
| 19 Li porta il vento legati alle sue ale, e i lor sagrifizj saranno la loro vergogna. | 19 A wind has wrapped them in its wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their altars. |
