| 1 L'anno undecimo, il terzo mese, il primo del mese, il Signore parlommi, dicendo: | 1 In the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me: |
| 2 Figliuolo dell'uomo, di a Faraone re dell'Egitto, e al suo popolo: A chi se' tu simile in tua grandezza? | 2 "Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude: "Whom are you like in your greatness? |
| 3 Eccoti Assur qual cedro sul Libano di belle braccia, ombroso di frondi, sublime di altezza, la cui vetta tra' densi rami s'innalza. | 3 Behold, I will liken you to a cedar in Lebanon, with fair branches and forest shade, and of great height, its top among the clouds. |
| 4 Lo nudriron le acque, e una perenne fiumana lo fece salire in atto; l'umore correva intorno alle sue radici, ed ei facea passare i suoi ruscelli a tutte le piante di quella regione. | 4 The waters nourished it, the deep made it grow tall, making its rivers flow round the place of its planting, sending forth its streams to all the trees of the forest. |
| 5 Per questo ei superò in altezza le piante tutte del paese, e i rami suoi si moltiplicarono, e s'ingrandirono mercè delle acque abbondanti. | 5 So it towered high above all the trees of the forest; its boughs grew large and its branches long, from abundant water in its shoots. |
| 6 E com' ei gettava grand' ombra, su' rami di lui fecer nido gli uccelli tutti dell'aria, e sotto alle sue frondi partorirono tutte le bestie della foresta, e all'ombra di lui si ricoverava una turba di moltissime genti. | 6 All the birds of the air made their nests in its boughs; under its branches all the beasts of the field brought forth their young; and under its shadow dwelt all great nations. |
| 7 Ed egli era bellissimo per sua grandezza, e per l'ampiezza de' rami suoi: conciossiachè erano le sue radici presso ad acque copiose. | 7 It was beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its branches; for its roots went down to abundant waters. |
| 8 Più alti cedri di lui non furono nel paradiso di Dio, non arrivavano alla sua vetta gli abeti, e i platani non agguagliavano de' suoi rami l'ampiezza: nissuna pianta del paradiso di Dio fu da assomigliare a luì, e alla bellezza di lui. | 8 The cedars in the garden of God could not rival it, nor the fir trees equal its boughs; the plane trees were as nothing compared with its branches; no tree in the garden of God was like it in beauty. |
| 9 Perch'io lo feci sì bello, e di molti, e fitti rami, ebber di lui gelosia tutte le deliziose piante, che erano nel paradiso di Dio. | 9 I made it beautiful in the mass of its branches, and all the trees of Eden envied it, that were in the garden of God. |
| 10 Per questo così dice il Signore Dio: Perchè egli si è levato in altezza, e ha alzata la verdeggiante, ed ombrosa sua cima, e il cuore di lui s'insuperbì di sua elevazione, | 10 "Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Because it towered high and set its top among the clouds, and its heart was proud of its height, |
| 11 Lo ho io dato in potere del più forte trai popoli: ei ne farà quel, che vorrà: secondo la sua empietà io lo ho rigettato. | 11 I will give it into the hand of a mighty one of the nations; he shall surely deal with it as its wickedness deserves. I have cast it out. |
| 12 E gente straniera, e i più crudeli trai popoli lo troncheranno, e lo getteranno sui monti, e i rami di lui cadran per tutte le valli, e le spezzate sue frondi sopra tutte le rupi della terra, e tutti i popoli della terra fuggiranno da' padiglione di lui, e lo abbandoneranno. | 12 Foreigners, the most terrible of the nations, will cut it down and leave it. On the mountains and in all the valleys its branches will fall, and its boughs will lie broken in all the watercourses of the land; and all the peoples of the earth will go from its shadow and leave it. |
| 13 Sopra le rovine di lui poseranno gli uccelli dell'aria, e sui rami di lui sederanno tutte le bestie della terra. | 13 Upon its ruin will dwell all the birds of the air, and upon its branches will be all the beasts of the field. |
| 14 Per la qual cosa nissuno degli alberi posti lungo le acque s'innalzerà alla sua grandezza, e non eleverà la sua cima trai densi rami, e fronzuti; né saran fermi nella loro altezza tutti quest'alberi innaffiati dalle acque; perocché tutti sono dati in poter di morte nell'infima terra insieme co' figliuoli degli uomini, tra color, che scendono nel sepolcro. | 14 All this is in order that no trees by the waters may grow to lofty height or set their tops among the clouds, and that no trees that drink water may reach up to them in height; for they are all given over to death, to the nether world among mortal men, with those who go down to the Pit. |
| 15 Questo cose dice il Signore Dio: Nel dì, in cui egli cadde nell'inferno, io feci fare lutto grande, lo sommersi nell'abisso: e trattenni i suoi fiumi, e arrestai le grandi acque: si rattristò per cagion di lui il Libano, e tutte le piante dei campi si scossero. | 15 "Thus says the Lord GOD: When it goes down to Sheol I will make the deep mourn for it, and restrain its rivers, and many waters shall be stopped; I will clothe Lebanon in gloom for it, and all the trees of the field shall faint because of it. |
| 16 Col fracasso di sua rovina feci tremar le nazioni, quand' io lo feci cader nell'inferno con quelli, che calavano in quella fossa; e nel fondo della terra si consolarono tutte le piante dell'orto di delizie insigni, e famose del Libano, le quali erano tutte innaffiate dalle acque. | 16 I will make the nations quake at the sound of its fall, when I cast it down to Sheol with those who go down to the Pit; and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, will be comforted in the nether world. |
| 17 Perocché nell'inferno tra que', che periron di spada, disceser con lui tutti quelli, i quali, essendo il suo braccio, all'ombra di lui sedevano tralle nazioni. | 17 They also shall go down to Sheol with it, to those who are slain by the sword; yea, those who dwelt under its shadow among the nations shall perish. |
| 18 A chi se' tu simile, o illustre, e sublime tralle piante del giardin di delizia? Ecco, che colle piante di quel giardino tu se' stato cacciato nel fondo della terra: tu dormirai tralli incirconcisi, con que', che furono uccisi di spada. Così sarà di Faraone, e di tutta la sua gente, dice il Signore Dio. | 18 Whom are you thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? You shall be brought down with the trees of Eden to the nether world; you shall lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword. "This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, says the Lord GOD." |
