| 2 Giacchè tu hai profetizzato a noi, e ci hai detto, che il popolo d'Israele è difeso dal suo Dio, per farti vedere, che non v'ha altro dio, che Nabuchodonosor: | 2 "And who are you, Achior, and you hirelings of Ephraim, to prophesy among us as you have done today and tell us not to make war against the people of Israel because their God will defend them? Who is God except Nebuchadnezzar? |
| 3 Quando noi avremo uccisi tutti coloro, come se fossero un sol uomo, allora anche tu perirai sotto la spada degli Assiri, e tutto Israele anderà in perdizione con te, | 3 He will send his forces and will destroy them from the face of the earth, and their God will not deliver them--we the king's servants will destroy them as one man. They cannot resist the might of our cavalry. |
| 4 Esperimenterai come Nabuchodonosor è il signor di tutta quanta la terra: e allora la spada delle mie genti trapasserà i tuoi fianchi, e trafitto cadrai tra feriti d'Israele, fino a tanto che tu con essi finisca, e resti senza fiato. | 4 We will burn them up, and their mountains will be drunk with their blood, and their fields will be full of their dead. They cannot withstand us, but will utterly perish. So says King Nebuchadnezzar, the lord of the whole earth. For he has spoken; none of his words shall be in vain. |
| 5 Ma se tu credi vera la tua profezia, non si cambi di colore il tuo volto, e il pallore, che cuopre la tua faccia stia lungi da te, se tu credi, che queste parole mie non a possano aver effetto. | 5 "But you, Achior, you Ammonite hireling, who have said these words on the day of your iniquity, you shall not see my face again from this day until I take revenge on this race that came out of Egypt. |
| 6 Or affinchè tu sappi, che queste cose le proverai tu insieme con quelli, ecco che in questo punto tu sarai della società di quel popolo, affinchè quando eglino saran puniti dalla mia spada, tu stesso soggiaccia insieme alla stessa vendetta. | 6 Then the sword of my army and the spear of my servants shall pierce your sides, and you shall fall among their wounded, when I return. |
| 7 Allora Oloferne comandò a suoi servi, che preso Achior lo conducessero a Betulia, e lo rimettessero in mano de' figliuoli d'Israele. | 7 Now my slaves are going to take you back into the hill country and put you in one of the cities beside the passes, |
| 8 E i servi di Oloferne presero Achior, e si incamminaromo per la pianura, ma quando furono vicini ai monti, uscirono fuora dei frombolieri contro di essi. | 8 and you will not die until you perish along with them. |
| 9 E quelli piegando verso un lato del monte, legaron pei piedi, e pelle mani Achior a un albero; e così legato con funi lo lasciarono, e se ne tornarono al loro signore. | 9 If you really hope in your heart that they will not be taken, do not look downcast! I have spoken and none of my words shall fail." |
| 10 E i figliuoli d'Israele scesi da Betulia andarono a lui,e lo sciolsero, e lo condussero a Betulia; e postolo in mezzo del popolo, lo interrogarono qual fosse il motivo, per cui gli Assiri l'avesser lasciato legato in tal guisa. | 10 Then Holofernes ordered his slaves, who waited on him in his tent, to seize Achior and take him to Bethulia and hand him over to the men of Israel. |
| 11 In quel tempo eran principi in quel luogo Ozia figliuolo di Micha della tribù di Simeon, e Carmi, detto anche Gothoniel, | 11 So the slaves took him and led him out of the camp into the plain, and from the plain they went up into the hill country and came to the springs below Bethulia. |
| 12 Achior pertanto in mezzo a seniori, e in faccia a tutta la gente riferì tutto quello, che avea risposto alle interrogazioni di Oloferne, e come la gente di Oloferne avea voluto ucciderlo per aver dette quelle cose. | 12 When the men of the city saw them, they caught up their weapons and ran out of the city to the top of the hill, and all the slingers kept them from coming up by casting stones at them. |
| 13 E come lo stesso oloferne sdegnato dato, che egli perciò fosse messo nelle mani degl'Israeliti, perchè vinti che avesse gl'Israeliti volea far perire con vari supplizi lo stesso Achior, perchè avea detto: il Dio del cielo è loro difensore. | 13 However, they got under the shelter of the hill and they bound Achior and left him lying at the foot of the hill, and returned to their master. |
| 14 Allorchè Achior ebbe raccontate queste cose, tutto il popolo si prostrò per terra adorando il Signore, e gemendo tutti insieme, e piangendo porfero unanimamente le loro preghiere al Signore, | 14 Then the men of Israel came down from their city and found him; and they untied him and brought him into Bethulia and placed him before the magistrates of their city, |
| 15 Dicendo: Signore Dio del cielo, e della terra, mira la superbia di costoro, e rifletti alla nostra umiliazione, e guarda in faccia i tuoi Santi, e fa vedere, come tu non disprezzi quelli, che confidono in te, e quei che presumono di se stessi, e del loro potere si vantano, tu gli umilii. | 15 who in those days were Uzziah the son of Micah, of the tribe of Simeon, and Chabris the son of Gothoniel, and Charmis the son of Melchiel. |
| 16 Ma dopo i pianti, e finita che fu l'orazione del popolo, che durò tutto il giorno, consolarono Achior, | 16 They called together all the elders of the city, and all their young men and their women ran to the assembly; and they set Achior in the midst of all their people, and Uzziah asked him what had happened. |
| 17 Dicendo: Il Dio de' padri nostri, di cui tu hai celebrata la virtù, egli cangerà la tua sorte in guisa, che piuttosto vedrai tu la loro rovina. | 17 He answered and told them what had taken place at the council of Holofernes, and all that he had said in the presence of the Assyrian leaders, and all that Holofernes had said so boastfully against the house of Israel. |
| 18 Ma quando il Signore Dio nostro avrà così posti in libertà i suoi servi, sia egli Dio anche con te in mezzo a noi, onde se così ti parrà, tu viva con noi insieme con tutta la tua gente. | 18 Then the people fell down and worshiped God, and cried out to him, and said, |
| 19 Allora licenziata l'adunanza, Ozia lo accolse in sua casa, e gl'imbandì una gran cena. | 19 "O Lord God of heaven, behold their arrogance, and have pity on the humiliation of our people, and look this day upon the faces of those who are consecrated to thee." |
| 20 E invitati tutti i seniori, finito essendo il digiuno, presero insieme ristoro. | 20 Then they consoled Achior, and praised him greatly. |
| 21 Indi fu convocato tutto il popolo, e tutta la notte fecero orazione nella chiesa, chiedendo aiuto al Dio d'Israello. | 21 And Uzziah took him from the assembly to his own house and gave a banquet for the elders; and all that night they called on the God of Israel for help. |
