| 1 Dopo queste cose si raunarono i figliuoli di Moab, e i figliuoli di Ammon, e con essi erano degli Ammoniti per muover guerra contro Josaphat. | 1 After this the Moabites and Ammonites, and with them some of the Me-unites, came against Jehoshaphat for battle. |
| 2 E furono spediti messi a dire a Josaphat: Una gran turba di gente si è mossa contro di te da paesi di là dal mare, e dalla Siria; ed ora sono a campo in Asason-thamar, che è Engaddi. | 2 Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, "A great multitude is coming against you from Edom, from beyond the sea; and, behold, they are in Hazazon-tamar" (that is, En-gedi). |
| 3 E Josaphat pieno di spavento si rivolse tutto a pregare il Signore, e intimò il digiuno a tutto il popolo di Giuda. | 3 Then Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. |
| 4 E si adunò il popol di Giuda per invocare il Signore; e tutte le genti vennero dalle loro città a porgergli suppliche. | 4 And Judah assembled to seek help from the LORD; from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD. |
| 5 E alzatosi Josaphat nel mezzo dell'adunanza di Giuda, e di Gerusalemme nella casa del Signore dinanzi al nuovo atrio, | 5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, |
| 6 Disse: Signore Dio de' padri nostri, tu se' il Dio del cielo, e sei il padrone di tutti i regni delle nazioni: nelle mani tue è la fortezza, e la possanza, e nissuno può resistere a te. | 6 and said, "O LORD, God of our fathers, art thou not God in heaven? Dost thou not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? In thy hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee. |
| 7 Non se' tu quegli, o Signor nostro, che uccidesti tutti gli abitanti di questa terra all'arrivo d'Israele tuo popolo, e la assegnasti alla stirpe d'Abramo amico tuo in perpetuo? | 7 Didst thou not, O our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and give it for ever to the descendants of Abraham thy friend? |
| 8 E la hanno abitata, e ci hanno eretto un Santuario al nome tuo, e han detto: | 8 And they have dwelt in it, and have built thee in it a sanctuary for thy name, saying, |
| 9 Se verranno sciagure sopra di noi, spada vendicatrice, o pestilenza, o carestia, noi ci presenteremo al tuo cospetto dinanzi a questa casa, la quale porta il tuo nome: e nelle nostre tribolazioni alzeremo le grida a te, e tu ci esaudirai, e ci salverai. | 9 'If evil comes upon us, the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we will stand before this house, and before thee, for thy name is in this house, and cry to thee in our affliction, and thou wilt hear and save.' |
| 10 Ecco adunque che adesso i figliuolini di Ammon, e di Moab, e le montagne di Seir, sulle terre de' quali non permettesti, che passasse Israele, quando usciva dall'Egitto, ed egli lasciolli da parte, e non gli uccise; | 10 And now behold, the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade when they came from the land of Egypt, and whom they avoided and did not destroy-- |
| 11 Eglino pel contrario tentano, e fanno ogni sforzo per cacciar noi dal paese, di cui tu desti a noi il possesso. | 11 behold, they reward us by coming to drive us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. |
| 12 Dio nostro, dunque tu non farai giudizio di costoro? Imperocché non è noi tal fortezza, che possiam resistere a questa moltitudine, che ci assalisce. Ma non sapendo quel, che abbiamo da fare, questo solo ci rimane di volgere a te gli occhi nostri. | 12 O our God, wilt thou not execute judgment upon them? For we are powerless against this great multitude that is coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon thee." |
| 13 E tutto Giuda era dinanzi al Signore co' piccoli bambini, e colle mogli e co' figliuoli. | 13 Meanwhile all the men of Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. |
| 14 Ed eravi Jahaziel figliuolo di Zacharia, figliuolo di Banaia, figliuolo di Jehiel, figliuolo di Mathania, Levita, della famiglia di Asaph, ed entrò lo Spirito del Signore in lui, che stava in mezzo alla folla. | 14 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Je-iel, son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. |

| 16 Domane andrete contro di essi: perocchè saliranno al colle chiamato Sis, e li troverete all'estremità del torrente, che corre dirimpetto al deserto di Jeruel. | 16 Tomorrow go down against them; behold, they will come up by the ascent of Ziz; you will find them at the end of the valley, east of the wilderness of Jeruel. |
| 17 A voi non toccherà il combattere, ma solo tenetevi fermi con fidanza, e vedrete il soccorso, che darà il Signore a voi, o Giuda, e o Gerusalemme: non vi spaurite, non temete: domani vi moverete contro di loro, e il Signore sarà con voi. | 17 You will not need to fight in this battle; take your position, stand still, and see the victory of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.' Fear not, and be not dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, and the LORD will be with you." |
| 18 Allora Josaphat, e tutto Giuda, e tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme si prostraron bocconi per terra dinanzi al Signore, e lo adorarono. | 18 Then Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the LORD, worshiping the LORD. |
| 19 E i Leviti della stirpe di Caath, e della stirpe di Core davan laude al Signore Dio d'Israele con voce, che andava al cielo. | 19 And the Levites, of the Kohathites and the Korahites, stood up to praise the LORD, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice. |
| 20 E la mattina seguente si mossero, e s'incamminarono pel deserto di Thecue: e mentre erano per istrada, Josaphat stando in piedi in mezzo di loro, disse: Udite me, uomini di Giuda, e abitanti di Gerusalemme: credete al Signore Dio vostro, e sarete senza timori: credete ai profeti di lui, e tutto anderà felicemente. | 20 And they rose early in the morning and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, "Hear me, Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in the LORD your God, and you will be established; believe his prophets, and you will succeed." |
| 21 E diede i suoi avvertimenti al popolo, e scelse dei cantori del Signore, i quali divisi in ischiere cantassero le sue lodi,e precedessero l'esercito, e tutti a una voce dicessero: Date lode al Signore, perchè la sua misericordia è eterna. | 21 And when he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to the LORD and praise him in holy array, as they went before the army, and say, "Give thanks to the LORD, for his steadfast love endures for ever." |
| 22 E quand'eglino ebber dato principio al canto, il Signore rivolse contro di lor medesimi gli stratagemmi de nemici, viene a dire' de, figliuoli di Ammon, e di Moab, e di quelli del monte Seir, che erano andati per combattere contro Giuda, e rimasero sconfitti. | 22 And when they began to sing and praise, the LORD set an ambush against the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah, so that they were routed. |
| 23 Imperocché i figliuoli di Ammon, e di Moab assalirono gli abitanti del monte di Seir, e li trucidarono, e li distrussero: e fatto questo, venuti in rotta tra di loro, si uccisero gli uni gli altri. | 23 For the men of Ammon and Moab rose against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, destroying them utterly, and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they all helped to destroy one another. |
| 24 E Giuda arrivato che fu alla vedetta che guarda il deserto, vide da lungi tutta la regione, quant'era spaziosa, piena di cadaveri, e non essere rimaso alcuno, che avesse fuggita la morte. | 24 When Judah came to the watchtower of the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and behold, they were dead bodies lying on the ground; none had escaped. |
| 25 Andò adunque Josaphat, e con lui tutto il popolo a prendere le spoglie dei morti: e trovarono tra i cadaveri varie suppellettili, e vesti, e vasi di grandissimo pregio, e li presero, e duraron fatica a portar via ogni cosa in tre dì, tanta fu la preda. | 25 When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take the spoil from them, they found cattle in great numbers, goods, clothing, and precious things, which they took for themselves until they could carry no more. They were three days in taking the spoil, it was so much. |
| 26 E il quarto giorno si raunarono nella Valle di Benedizione: imperocché atteso l'aver eglino quivi benedetto il Signore, diedero a quel luogo il nome di valle di Benedizione, che dura anche in oggi. | 26 On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Beracah, for there they blessed the LORD; therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Beracah to this day. |
| 27 E tutta la gente di Giuda, e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme, preceduti da Josaphat, con gran letizia, perchè il Signore avea dato loro di trionfar de' loro nemici. | 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat at their head, returning to Jerusalem with joy, for the LORD had made them rejoice over their enemies. |
| 28 Ed entrarono in Gerusalemme, e nella casa del Signore al suono de' salteri, e delle cetre, e delle trombe. | 28 They came to Jerusalem, with harps and lyres and trumpets, to the house of the LORD. |
| 29 E sopra tutti i regni circonvicini si sparse il timor del Signore, avendo udito in qual modo il Signore avea combattuto contro i nemici d'Israele. | 29 And the fear of God came on all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard that the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel. |
| 30 E il regno di Josaphat fu in pace, e il Signore gli diede tranquillità da tutte parti. | 30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest round about. |
| 31 Josaphat adunque regnò sopra Giuda, e avea trentacinque anni quando principiò a regnare: e regnò anni venticinque in Gerusalemme; e sua madre avea nome Azuba figliuola di Selahi. | 31 Thus Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. |
| 32 E imitò il padre suo Asa, né in veruna cosa tralignò da lui, facendo quello, che era accetto nel cospetto del Signore. | 32 He walked in the way of Asa his father and did not turn aside from it; he did what was right in the sight of the LORD. |
| 33 Egli però non tolse via i luoghi eccelsi, e il popolo non aveva ancora rivolto il cuor suo al Signore Dio de' padri loro. | 33 The high places, however, were not taken away; the people had not yet set their hearts upon the God of their fathers. |
| 34 Il rimanente poi delle geste di Josaphat, le prime, e le ultime sono scritte nel libro di Jehu figliuolo di Hanani, il quale le espose nei libri dei re d'Israele. | 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, from first to last, are written in the chronicles of Jehu the son of Hanani, which are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel. |
| 35 Dopo di ciò Josaphat re di Giuda fece amicizia con Ochozia re d'Israele, le opere del quale furono empie al sommo. | 35 After this Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did wickedly. |

| 37 Ma Eliezer figliuolo di Dodau di Maresa profetizzò, e disse a Josaphat: Perchè tu hai fatto lega con Ochozia, il Signore ha rovinati i tuoi disegni. E le navi andarono in pezzi, e non poterono fare il viaggio di Tharsis. | 37 Then Eliezer the son of Do-davahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, "Because you have joined with Ahaziah, the LORD will destroy what you have made." And the ships were wrecked and were not able to go to Tarshish. |
