| 1 Le parole del re Lemuel; il sermone profetico, col quale sua madre l’ammaestrò. | 1 The words of Lemuel, king of Massa, which his mother taught him: |
| 2 CHE, figliuol mio? Che, figliuolo del seno mio? E che, figliuolo de’ miei voti? | 2 What, my son? What, son of my womb? What, son of my vows? |
| 3 Non dar la tua forza alle donne, Nè i tuoi costumi a ciò che è per distruggere i re. | 3 Give not your strength to women, your ways to those who destroy kings. |
| 4 Ei non si conviene ai re, o Lemuel, Ei non si conviene ai re d’esser bevitori di vino, Nè a’ principi d’esser bevitori di cervogia; | 4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to desire strong drink; |
| 5 Che talora eglino, avendo bevuto, non dimentichino gli statuti, E non pervertano il diritto di qualunque povero afflitto. | 5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and pervert the rights of all the afflicted. |
| 6 Date la cervogia al miserabile, E il vino a quelli che sono in amaritudine d’animo; | 6 Give strong drink to him who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress; |
| 7 Acciocchè bevano, e dimentichino la lor miseria, E non si ricordino più de’ lor travagli. | 7 let them drink and forget their poverty, and remember their misery no more. |
| 8 Apri la tua bocca per lo mutolo, Per mantenere la ragion di tutti quelli che sono in pericolo di perire. | 8 Open your mouth for the dumb, for the rights of all who are left desolate. |
| 9 Apri la tua bocca; giudica giustamente; Fa’ diritto al povero ed al bisognoso | 9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, maintain the rights of the poor and needy. |
| 10 Chi troverà una donna di valore? Il prezzo di essa avanza di gran lunga quello delle perle. | 10 A good wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. |
| 11 Il cuor del suo marito si fida in lei; Ed egli non avrà giammai mancamento di veste. | 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. |
| 12 Ella gli fa del bene, e non del male, Tutto il tempo della sua vita. | 12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. |
| 13 Ella cerca della lana e del lino, E lavora delle sue mani con diletto. | 13 She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. |
| 14 Ella è come le navi de’ mercatanti: Ella fa venire il suo pane da lungi. | 14 She is like the ships of the merchant, she brings her food from afar. |
| 15 Ella si leva, mentre è ancora notte, E dà il cibo alla sua famiglia, Ed ordina alle sue serventi il lor lavoro. | 15 She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and tasks for her maidens. |
| 16 Ella considera un campo, e l’acquista; Ella pianta una vigna del frutto delle sue mani. | 16 She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. |
| 17 Ella si cinge i lombi di forza, E fortifica le sue braccia. | 17 She girds her loins with strength and makes her arms strong. |
| 18 Perciocchè il suo traffico è buono, ella lo gusta; La sua lampana non si spegne di notte. | 18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. |
| 19 Ella mette la mano al fuso, E le sue palme impugnano la conocchia. | 19 She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. |
| 20 Ella allarga la mano all’afflitto, E porge le mani al bisognoso. | 20 She opens her hand to the poor, and reaches out her hands to the needy. |
| 21 Ella non teme della neve per la sua famiglia; Perciocchè tutta la sua famiglia è vestita a doppio. | 21 She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet. |
| 22 Ella si fa de’ capoletti; Fin lino, e porpora sono il suo vestire. | 22 She makes herself coverings; her clothing is fine linen and purple. |
| 23 Il suo marito è conosciuto nelle porte, Quando egli siede con gli anziani del paese. | 23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land. |
| 24 Ella fa de’ veli, e li vende; E delle cinture, le quali ella dà a’ mercatanti. | 24 She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers girdles to the merchant. |
| 25 Ella è vestita di gloria e d’onore; E ride del giorno a venire. | 25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. |
| 26 Ella apre la bocca con sapienza, E la legge della benignità è sopra la sua lingua. | 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. |
| 27 Ella considera gli andamenti della sua casa, E non mangia il pan di pigrizia. | 27 She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. |
| 28 I suoi figliuoli si levano, e la predicano beata, Il suo marito anch’egli, e la loda; | 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: |
| 29 Dicendo: Molte donne si son portate valorosamente; Ma tu le sopravanzi tutte. | 29 "Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all." |
| 30 La grazia è cosa fallace, e la bellezza è cosa vana; Ma la donna che ha il timor del Signore sarà quella che sarà lodata. | 30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. |
| 31 Datele del frutto delle sue mani; E lodinla le sue opere nelle porte | 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates. |
