1 Colui che si separa cerca le sue cupidità, E schernisce ogni legge e ragione	1 In estrangement one seeks pretexts: with all persistence he picks a quarrel.
2 Lo stolto non si diletta nella prudenza, Ma in ciò che il cuor suo si manifesti	2 The fool takes no delight in understanding, but rather in displaying what he thinks.
3 Quando viene un empio, viene anche lo sprezzo, E il vituperio con ignominia	3 With wickedness comes contempt, and with disgrace comes scorn.
4 Le parole della bocca dell’uomo eccellente sono acque profonde; La fonte di sapienza è un torrente che sgorga	4 The words from a man's mouth are deep waters, but the source of wisdom is a flowing brook.
5 Egli non è bene d’aver riguardo alla qualità dell’empio, Per far torto al giusto nel giudicio	5 It is not good to be partial to the guilty, and so to reject a rightful claim.
6 Le labbra dello stolto entrano in contesa, E la sua bocca chiama le percosse.	6 The fool's lips lead him into strife, and his mouth provokes a beating.
7 La bocca dello stolto è la sua ruina, E le sue labbra sono il laccio dell’anima sua	7 The fool's mouth is his ruin; his lips are a snare to his life.
8 Le parole di chi va bisbigliando paiono lusinghevoli; Ma scendono fin nell’interiora del ventre	8 The words of a talebearer are like dainty morsels that sink into one's inmost being.
9 Chi si porta rimessamente nel suo lavoro, È fratello dell’uomo dissipatore	9 The man who is slack in his work is own brother to the man who is destructive.
10 Il Nome del Signore è una forte torre; Il giusto vi ricorrerà, e sarà in salvo in luogo elevato	10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the just man runs to it and is safe.
11 I beni del ricco son la sua città di fortezza, E come un alto muro alla sua immaginazione	11 The rich man's wealth is his strong city; he fancies it a high wall.
12 Il cuor dell’uomo s’innalza avanti la ruina; Ma l’umiltà va davanti alla gloria	12 Before his downfall a man's heart is haughty, but humility goes before honors.
13 Chi fa risposta prima che abbia udito, Ciò gli è pazzia e vituperio	13 He who answers before he hears-- his is the folly and the shame.
14 Lo spirito dell’uomo sostiene l’infermità di esso; Ma chi solleverà lo spirito afflitto?	14 A man's spirit sustains him in infirmity-- but a broken spirit who can bear?
15 Il cuor dell’uomo intendente acquista scienza; E l’orecchio de’ savi cerca conoscimento	15 The mind of the intelligent gains knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
16 Il presente dell’uomo gli fa far largo, E lo conduce davanti a’ grandi	16 A man's gift clears the way for him, and gains him access to great men.
17 Chi è il primo a piatir la sua causa ha ragione; Ma il suo compagno vien poi, ed esamina quello ch’egli ha detto	17 The man who pleads his case first seems to be in the right; then his opponent comes and puts him to the test.
18 La sorte fa cessar le liti, E fa gli spartimenti fra i potenti	18 The lot puts an end to disputes, and is decisive in a controversy between the mighty.
19 Il fratello offeso è più inespugnabile che una forte città; E le contese tra fratelli son come le sbarre di un palazzo	19 A brother is a better defense than a strong city, and a friend is like the bars of a castle.
20 Il ventre dell’uomo sarà saziato del frutto della sua bocca; Egli sarà saziato della rendita delle sue labbra	20 From the fruit of his mouth a man has his fill; with the yield of his lips he sates himself.
21 Morte e vita sono in poter della lingua; E chi l’ama mangerà del frutto di essa	21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who make it a friend shall eat its fruit.
22 Chi ha trovata moglie ha trovata una buona cosa, Ed ha ottenuto favor del Signore	22 He who finds a wife finds happiness; it is a favor he receives from the LORD.
23 Il povero parla supplichevolmente; Ma il ricco risponde duramente	23 The poor man implores, but the rich man answers harshly.
24 Un uomo che ha degli amici deve portarsi da amico; E vi è tale amico, che è più congiunto che un fratello	24 Some friends bring ruin on us, but a true friend is more loyal than a brother.
