1 Történetesen ott volt Béliálnak egyik embere, név szerint Seba, Bokri fia, egy jeminita férfi. Ez megfújta a harsonát, s azt mondta: »Nincs részünk Dávidban, s nincs örökségünk Izáj fiában: térj vissza sátraidba, Izrael!«	1 Now there happened to be there a worthless fellow, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite; and he blew the trumpet, and said, "We have no portion in David, and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; every man to his tents, O Israel!"
2 Erre egész Izrael elpártolt Dávidtól és Sebát, Bokri fiát követte. Júda emberei azonban kitartottak királyuk mellett a Jordántól egészen Jeruzsálemig.	2 So all the men of Israel withdrew from David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri; but the men of Judah followed their king steadfastly from the Jordan to Jerusalem.
3 Amikor aztán a király hazaért Jeruzsálembe, vette azt a tíz mellékfeleségét, akit a ház őrzésére hátrahagyott, s őrizet alá helyezte őket. Élelemmel ellátta őket, de nem ment be hozzájuk, hanem zár alatt voltak haláluk napjáig, s özvegységben éltek.	3 And David came to his house at Jerusalem; and the king took the ten concubines whom he had left to care for the house, and put them in a house under guard, and provided for them, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up until the day of their death, living as if in widowhood.
4 Majd azt mondta a király Amászának: »Hívd egybe nekem harmadnapra Júda valamennyi emberét, s jelenj meg magad is.«	4 Then the king said to Amasa, "Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be here yourself."
5 Elment tehát Amásza, hogy összehívja Júdát, de tovább maradt el annál az időnél, amelyet a király megszabott neki.	5 So Amasa went to summon Judah; but he delayed beyond the set time which had been appointed him.
6 Azt mondta ezért Dávid Abizájnak: »Most még majd jobban megsanyargat minket Seba, Bokri fia, mint Absalom! Vedd tehát urad szolgáit, s nyomulj utána, hogy erős városokra ne találjon, s el ne meneküljön előlünk.«	6 And David said to Abishai, "Now Sheba the son of Bichri will do us more harm than Absalom; take your lord's servants and pursue him, lest he get himself fortified cities, and cause us trouble. "
7 Kivonultak tehát vele Joáb emberei meg a keretiek és a feletiek s a vitézek is mind kivonultak Jeruzsálemből, hogy üldözőbe vegyék Sebát, Bokri fiát.	7 And there went out after Abishai, Joab and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men; they went out from Jerusalem to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
8 Amikor aztán annál a nagy kőnél voltak, amely Gibeonban van, Amásza, aki éppen odaért, találkozott velük. Joábot ekkor szoros, testhez álló ruha fedte, fölötte ágyékig csüngő, hüvelybe dugott kard övezte, amely azonban olyan volt, hogy egy kis mozdulattal döfésre készen ki lehetett rántani.	8 When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. Now Joab was wearing a soldier's garment, and over it was a girdle with a sword in its sheath fastened upon his loins, and as he went forward it fell out.
9 Azt mondta ekkor Joáb Amászának: »Üdvözlégy, testvérem!« – és megfogta jobb kezével Amásza állát, mintha meg akarta volna csókolni.	9 And Joab said to Amasa, "Is it well with you, my brother?" And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.
10 Amásza nem vette észre a kardot, amelyet Joáb készen tartott, s Joáb oldalba döfte és kiontotta belét a földre. Második sebet nem is ejtett rajta, mert halott volt. Joáb és Abizáj, a fivére azután üldözőbe vették Sebát, Bokri fiát.	10 But Amasa did not observe the sword which was in Joab's hand; so Joab struck him with it in the body, and shed his bowels to the ground, without striking a second blow; and he died. Then Joab and Abishai his brother pursued Sheba the son of Bichri.
11 Eközben néhány ember Joáb társai közül megállt Amásza holtteste mellett és azt mondta: »Íme, aki Joáb helyett Dávid kísérője akart lenni.«	11 And one of Joab's men took his stand by Amasa, and said, "Whoever favors Joab, and whoever is for David, let him follow Joab."
12 Amásza ugyanis vérbe borítva ott feküdt az út közepén. Amikor az egyik ember látta, hogy az egész nép megáll és nézi, kivitte Amászát az útról a mezőre, s letakarta egy ruhával, hogy ne álljanak meg miatta az arra menők.	12 And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the highway. And any one who came by, seeing him, stopped; and when the man saw that all the people stopped, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field, and threw a garment over him.
13 Amikor aztán kivitték az útról, minden ember tovább ment, s követte Joábot, Sebának, Bokri fiának üldözésében.	13 When he was taken out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue Sheba the son of Bichri.
14 Ő ezalatt keresztülvonult Izraelnek valamennyi törzsén egészen Abeláig, vagyis Bétmaakáig, s ott összegyűlt körülötte minden válogatott ember.	14 And Sheba passed through all the tribes of Israel to Abel of Beth-maacah; and all the Bichrites assembled, and followed him in.
15 Ők tehát odamentek, s ostrom alá vették Abelában, vagyis Bétmaakában. Körülvették a várost töltésekkel, s ostromolni kezdték a várost, s a Joábbal levő egész nép nekilátott a falak lerombolásának.	15 And all the men who were with Joab came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah; they cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart; and they were battering the wall, to throw it down.
16 Ekkor kikiáltott egy eszes asszony a városból: »Halljátok, halljátok! Mondjátok meg Joábnak: ‘Jöjj közelebb, hadd beszéljek veled.’«	16 Then a wise woman called from the city, "Hear! Hear! Tell Joab, 'Come here, that I may speak to you.'"
17 Amikor ő odament hozzá, azt mondta neki: »Te vagy, Joáb?« Ő erre azt felelte: »Én.« Ekkor az így szólt hozzá: »Hallgasd meg szolgálód szavát.« Ő azt felelte: »Meghallgatom.«	17 And he came near her; and the woman said, "Are you Joab?" He answered, "I am." Then she said to him, "Listen to the words of your maidservant." And he answered, "I am listening."
18 Azt mondta erre az asszony: »Így hangzik a régi közmondás: ‘Akik kérdezősködni akarnak, Abelában kérdezősködjenek. Így célt is értek.’	18 Then she said, "They were wont to say in old time, 'Let them but ask counsel at Abel'; and so they settled a matter.
19 Nem én vagyok-e az, aki igazat felelek Izraelben, s te fel akarod dúlni a várost, s el akarsz pusztítani egy anyát Izraelben? Miért rontasz az Úr örökségére?«	19 I am one of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel; you seek to destroy a city which is a mother in Israel; why will you swallow up the heritage of the LORD?"
20 Joáb erre azt felelte: »Távol legyen, távol legyen az tőlem, hogy rárontsak és leromboljam.	20 Joab answered, "Far be it from me, far be it, that I should swallow up or destroy!
21 Nem úgy van a dolog, hanem úgy, hogy egy Efraim hegységéből való ember, név szerint Seba, Bokri fia felemelte kezét Dávid király ellen. Csak őt szolgáltassátok ki, s akkor elvonulunk a város alól.« Azt mondta erre az asszony Joábnak: »Íme, majd kihajítjuk hozzád a fejét a kőfalon.«	21 That is not true. But a man of the hill country of Ephraim, called Sheba the son of Bichri, has lifted up his hand against King David; give up him alone, and I will withdraw from the city." And the woman said to Joab, "Behold, his head shall be thrown to you over the wall."
22 Bement erre az egész néphez, s bölcsen szólt nekik, s azok levágatták Sebának, Bokri fiának fejét, s kihajították Joábnak. Erre ő megfúvatta a harsonát, s mindenki elvonult a város alól sátrába, Joáb pedig visszatért Jeruzsálembe a királyhoz.	22 Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. So he blew the trumpet, and they dispersed from the city, every man to his home. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.
23 Ekkor Joáb volt Izrael egész seregének fővezére, Benája, Jojáda fia a keretiek és a feletiek vezére,	23 Now Joab was in command of all the army of Israel; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was in command of the Cherethites and the Pelethites;
24 Adurám a robotügyek vezetője, Jozafát, Áhilud fia a jegyző,	24 and Adoram was in charge of the forced labor; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder;
25 Síva az íródeák, Szádok és Abjatár a papok,	25 and Sheva was secretary; and Zadok and Abiathar were priests;
26 a jaíri Ira pedig Dávid papja.	26 and Ira the Jairite was also David's priest.
