1 Non ti fare, invece d'amico, nemico del prossimo, perchè il malvagio avrà come sua parte obbrobrio e ignominia, e così ogni peccatore invidioso e doppio di lingua.	1 Do not be willing to become an enemy instead of a friend to your neighbor. For an evil man will inherit reproach and disgrace, as will every sinner who is envious and double-tongued.
2 Non t'innalzare nei pensieri del tuo cuore come toro, chè la tua virtù non resti schiacciata dalla stoltezza,	2 You should not extol yourself, like a bull, in the thoughts of your soul, lest perhaps your strength may be cast down through foolishness,
3 ed essa non di vori le tue foglie, non disperda i tuoi frutti, e tu non rimanga come pianta secca in mezzo al deserto.	3 which would consume your leaves, and destroy your fruit, and leave you behind like a dry tree in the desert.
4 L'anima malvagia rovinerà chi la possiede, lo renderà oggetto di allegrezza, pei suoi nemici, e lo condurrà alla sorte degli empi.	4 For a wicked soul will destroy the one who has it. For it gladly provides enemies to him, and it will lead him to the fate of the impious.
5 La parola dolce moltiplica gli amici e ammansisce i nemici, e la lingua piena di grazia produce abbondanti frutti nell'uomo onesto.	5 A sweet word multiplies friends and mitigates enemies. And thankful words abound in a good man.
6 Molti siano quelli che vivono con te in ottimi rapporti, ma tuo confidente ve ne sia uno solo fra mille.	6 Allow many to be at peace with you, but allow one out of a thousand to be your counselor.
7 Se hai un amico, fàllo tuo nella prova, e non ti fidare troppo facilmente di lui,	7 If you would obtain a friend, test him before you accept him, and do not trust him readily.
8 perché v'è chi è amico quando gli torna comodo, e non seguita nel giorno della sventura;	8 For there is a friend according to his own time, but he will not remain in the day of tribulation.
9 v'è chi di amico si cambia in nemico, e v'è l'amico che metterà fuori odio, risse e insulti.	9 And there is a friend who can be turned to animosity. And there is a friend who will reveal hatred and ridicule and insults.
10 Vi sono degli amici commensali a tavola che spariscono nel giorno della necessità.	10 And there is a friend who is a companion at table, but he will not remain in a day of need.
11 Se l'amico resta costante, sarà come tuo eguale, e potrà porre libera mente le mani nelle cose di casa tua.	11 A friend, if he remains steadfast, will be to you as you are to yourself, and he will act with faithfulness among those of your household.
12 Se egli si umilia dinanzi a te e si ritira dalla tua presenza, avrai per buona e unanime la sua amicizia.	12 If he humbles himself before you and hides himself from your face, you shall have a noble and harmonious friendship.
13 Allontanati dai tuoi nemici o guardati dai tuoi amici.	13 Distance yourself from your enemies, and pay attention to your friends.
14 L'amico fedele è una forte protezione, e chi lo trova ha trovato un tesoro.	14 A faithful friend is a strong shelter, and whoever has found one has found a treasure.
15 Nulla può esser paragonato ad un amico fedele e l'oro e l'argento non possono esser messi sulla bilancia colla eccellenza della sua fedeltà.	15 Nothing is comparable to a faithful friend, and no weight of silver or gold is worth more than the goodness of his fidelity.
16 L'amico fedele è il balsamo della vita e dell'immortalità, e quelli che temono il Signore lo troveranno.	16 A faithful friend is a medicine for life and immortality; and those who fear the Lord will find one.
17 Chi teme il Signore godrà di buona amicizia, perchè il suo amico sarà simile a lui.	17 He who fears God will have a similar good friendship, because his friend will be like him.
18 Figlio, fin dalla tua giovinezza abbraccia la disciplina, e fino alla vecchiaia troverai la sapienza.	18 Son, from your youth receive instruction, and then you will find wisdom, even to your grey hairs.
19 Accostati ad essa come chi ara e semina, ed aspettane i buoni frutti.	19 Approach wisdom like one who plows and sows, and then wait for her good fruits.
20 Ti affaticherai un poco nel coltivarla, ma presto ne mangerai i frutti.	20 For in doing her work, you will labor a little, but you will soon eat from her produce.
21 Quanto riesce oltremodo ardua la sapienza agli ignoranti! Chi è senza cuore e non rimarrà con lei.	21 How exceedingly harsh is wisdom to unlearned men! And so, the witless will not remain with her.
22 Ne faranno la prova come del peso d'una pietra, e non tarderanno a gettarla per terra.	22 She will be to them like a great stone of trial, and they will cast her away from them without delay.
23 Perchè la sapienza che ammaestra, secondo il suo nome, non è conosciuta da molti; ma in quelli che la conoscono essa resta fino alla presenza di Dio.	23 For the wisdom of doctrine is in accord with her name, and she is not manifest to many. But she continues with those by whom she is recognized, even in the sight of God.
24 Ascolta, figliolo, e abbraccia il consiglio dell'intelligenza, e non rigettare il mio consiglio.	24 Listen, son, and accept an understanding counsel, for you should not discard my advice.
25 Metti i tuoi piedi nei ceppi di lei e il tuo collo nelle sue catene,	25 Set your feet in her fetters and your neck in her chains.
26 piega le tue spalle e portala, e non aver in uggia i suoi legami.	26 Incline your shoulder, and carry her, for you will not be grieved by her bindings.
27 Accostati a lei con tutto l'animo, e con tutte le forze segui le sue vie.	27 Approach her with all your soul, and serve her ways with all your strength.
28 Cercala, ed essa ti si manifesterà, e quando la possiedi non l'abbandonare.	28 Examine her, and she will be revealed to you, and when you have obtained her, you should not abandon her.
29 Perchè al la fine troverai in lei riposo ed essa diventerà il tuo diletto.	29 For, in the very end, you will find rest in her, and she will turn into your delight.
30 E i suoi ceppi saranno tua valida protezione e base di virtù, e la sua catena una veste di gloria.	30 Then her fetters will be a strong protection and a firm foundation for you, and her chains will be a robe of glory.
31 Infatti in lei è l'onore della vita, e le sue catene sono fasce salutari.	31 For in her is the beauty of life, and her bindings are a healing bandage.
32 Ti rivestirai di lei come di veste gloriosa, e la porrai sopra il tuo capo come corona di gioia.	32 You will be clothed with her as with a robe of glory, and you will set her upon your head like a crown of rejoicing.
33 Figlio mio, se mi starai attento, imparerai, e se applicherai la tua mente, sarai saggio.	33 Son, if you heed me, you will learn. And if you adapt your mind, you will be wise.
34 Se porgerai il tuo orecchio, riceverai la dottrina, e se amerai ascoltare, sarai sapiente.	34 If you incline your ear, you will receive doctrine. And if you love to listen, you will be wise.
35 Frequenta la compagnia degli anziani prudenti, unisciti di cuore alla loro saggezza, per poter ascoltare tutto ciò che si dice di Dio; e non ti sfuggano le sentenze degne di lode.	35 Stand among the multitude of prudent elders, and join yourself to their wisdom from the heart, so that you may be able to hear every discourse about God, and so that the proverbs of praise may not flee from you.
36 Se tu vedi un uomo di buon senso, va di buon mattino a trovarlo, e il tuo piede consumi i gradini della sua porta.	36 And if you see a man of understanding, stand watch for him, and let your feet wear down the steps of his doors.
37 I tuoi pensieri sian fìssi nei precetti di Dio, medita di continuo i suoi comandamenti, ed Egli ti darà un cuore, e ti sarà concessa la sapienza da te bramata.	37 Set your thoughts on the precepts of God, and be entirely constant in his commandments. And he himself will give a heart to you, and the desire of wisdom will be given to you.
