LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Non inorgoglirti se t'hanno posto a capo, sta' con i convitati come uno di loro, provvedi prima a loro e poi siedi.	1 Have they made you the presider? Do not let it go to your head, behave like everyone else in the party,see that they are happy and then sit down yourself.
2 Siediti, dopo aver espletato il tuo compito, per rallegrarti della loro allegrezza e ricevere la corona per le tue buone maniere.	2 Having discharged your duties, take your place so that your joy may be through theirs, and you mayreceive the crown for your competence.
3 Parla, o anziano, perché ti s'addice, ma con saggezza e senza intralciare la musica.	3 Speak, old man -- it is proper that you should -- but with discretion: do not spoil the music.
4 Se c'è uno spettacolo, non versare parole, non sfoggiare sapienza fuori tempo.	4 If someone is singing, do not ramble on and do not play the sage at the wrong moment.
5 Rubino incastonato nel monile d'oro un concerto di mùsici mentre si beve il vino.	5 An amber seal on a precious stone, such is a concert of music at a wine feast.
6 Smeraldo incastonato nell'oggetto d'oro la melodia dei mùsici con il dolce vino.	6 An emerald seal in a golden setting, such are strains of music with a vintage wine.
7 Parla, o giovane, se c'è bisogno, non più di due volte, solo se interrogato.	7 Speak, young man, when you must, but twice at most, and then only if questioned.
8 Sintetizza il discorso, di' molto in poco, sii come chi sa, eppure tace.	8 Keep to the point, say much in few words; give the impression of knowing but not wanting to speak.
9 Tra i grandi non darti importanza e tra gli anziani non ciarlare molto.	9 Among eminent people do not behave as though you were their equal; do not make frivolous remarkswhen someone else is speaking.
10 Prima del tuono s'affretta il lampo, così il favore precede l'uomo modesto.	10 Lightning comes before the thunder, favour goes ahead of a modest person.
11 A'lzati in tempo e non attardarti, corri a casa senza perdere tempo.	11 Leave in good time, do not bring up the rear, and hurry home without loitering.
12 Divèrtiti e appaga i tuoi desideri, ma non peccare con parole superbe.	12 There amuse yourself, and do what you have a mind to, but do not sin by arrogant talk.
13 Per tutto questo benedici il tuo Creatore che ti inebria con i suoi beni.	13 And for all this bless your Creator, who intoxicates you with his favours.
14 Chi teme il Signore accoglie l'istruzione, quelli che vegliano trovano il suo favore.	14 Whoever fears the Lord wil accept his correction; those who look for him wil win his favour.
15 Chi scruta la legge ne sarà ripieno, ma l'ipocrita vi troverà scandalo.	15 Whoever seeks the Law wil be nourished by it, the hypocrite will find it a stumbling-block.
16 Quanti temono il Signore sanno giudicare, brillano come luce i loro giudizi.	16 Those who fear the Lord win his approval, their good deeds shining like a light.
17 Il peccatore rifiuterà il rimprovero e prenderà la decisione che gli piace.	17 The sinner waves reproof aside, he finds an excuse for headstrong behaviour.
18 L'uomo di senno non disprezza la riflessione, ma l'empio superbo non prova timore.	18 A sensible person never scorns a warning; foreigners and the proud do not know about fear.
19 Non far nulla senza consiglio e non cambiare idea mentre stai operando.	19 Never act without reflection, and you wil not regret your actions.
20 Non andare su strada scivolosa, così non batterai sulle pietre.	20 Do not venture on a rough road, for fear of stumbling over the stones.
21 Non avventurarti su strada inesplorata	21 Do not be over-confident on an even road
22 e guàrdati dai tuoi stessi figli.	22 and beware of your own children.
23 In tutto quello che fai fidati di te stesso, poiché anche questo è secondo i comandamenti.	23 Watch yourself in everything you do; this is also the way to keep the commandments.
24 Chi crede nella legge bada ai comandamenti, chi confida nel Signore non sarà umiliato.	24 Anyone who trusts in the Law obeys its precepts, no one who has confidence in the Lord wil come toharm.
