Siracide 13

LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Chi tocca la pece s'imbratta, chi frequenta l'arrogante lo imita.	1 Whoever touches pitch will be defiled, and anyone who associates with the proud wil come to be likethem.
2 Non sollevare un peso troppo grande per te, non frequentare chi è più forte e più ricco di te. Perché accostare la brocca con la pentola? Se l'una cozza, l'altra si spezza.	2 Do not try to carry a burden too heavy for you, do not associate with someone more powerful andwealthy than yourself. Why put the clay pot next to the iron cauldron? It wil only break when they bang againsteach other.
3 Il ricco fa l'ingiustizia e poi anche minaccia, il povero subisce l'ingiustizia e chiede perdono.	3 The rich does wrong and takes a high line; the poor is wronged and has to beg for pardon.
4 Se gli sei utile, ti sfrutta, se hai bisogno, ti abbandona.	4 If you are useful the rich will exploit you, if you go bankrupt he wil desert you.
5 Se possiedi, starà con te, e ti spoglierà senza il minimo rimorso.	5 Are you well off? - he wil live with you, he will clean you out without a single qualm.
6 Se ha bisogno di te, t'imbroglia, ti sorride, ti dà speranze, chiede gentilmente: "Ti occorre qualcosa?".	6 Does he need you? - he will hoodwink you, smile at you and raise your hopes; he wil speak politely toyou and say, 'Is there anything you need?'
7 Ti farà vergognare con i suoi pranzi, fino a quando non ti spillerà due o tre volte tanto; così alla fine sarà lui a deriderti, dopo, ti vedrà ma ti eviterà, anzi scuoterà la testa su di te.	7 He will make you feel smal at his dinner parties and, having cleaned you out two or three times over,wil end by laughing at you. Afterwards, when he sees you, he will avoid you and shake his head about you.
8 Bada a non farti ingannare, affinché non sia umiliato per la tua leggerezza.	8 Take care you are not hoodwinked and thus humiliated through your own stupidity.
9 Se un potente t'invita, fa' resistenza, così insisterà nell'invitarti.	9 When an influential person invites you, show reluctance, and he will press his invitation all the more.
10 Non essere sfacciato per non essere respinto, non stare appartato per non essere dimenticato.	10 Do not thrust yourself forward, in case you are pushed aside, but do not stand aloof, or you will beoverlooked.
11 Non parlargli da pari a pari, non fargli credito se parla molto;	11 Do not affect to treat him as an equal, do not trust his flow of words; since all this talking is expresslymeant to test you, under cover of geniality he wil be weighing you up.
12 perché spesso parla per provarti e t'indaga anche sorridendo.	12 Pitiless is anyone who retails gossip; he wil not spare you either blows or chains.
13 Egli non ha riguardi per i tuoi segreti, e non ti risparmierà guai e catene.	13 Be wary, take very great care, because you are walking with your own downfal .
14 Fai attenzione e sii molto cauto, perché cammini sull'orlo del precipizio.	14
15 Ogni animale ama il suo simile e ogni uomo il suo prossimo.	15 Every living thing loves its own sort, and every man his fel ow.
16 Ogni carne è attratta verso la stessa specie, perciò l'uomo aderisce al suo simile.	16 Every creature mixes with its kind, and human beings stick to their own sort.
17 Forse il lupo coabiterà con l'agnello? Così il peccatore con l'uomo pio.	17 How can wolf and lamb agree? - Just so with sinner and devout.
18 C'è pace tra la iena e il cane? E c'è pace tra il ricco e il povero?	18 What peace can there be between hyena and dog? And what peace between rich and poor?
19 I leoni nel deserto vanno a caccia di onàgri, così i poveri sono il pascolo dei ricchi.	19 Wild desert donkeys are the prey of lions; so too, the poor is the quarry of the rich.
20 Per il superbo la povertà è obbrobrio, così per il ricco è obbrobrio il povero.	20 The proud thinks humility abhorrent; so too, the rich abominates the poor.
21 Il ricco che vacilla è sostenuto dagli amici, ma il povero che cade è respinto dagli amici.	21 When the rich stumbles he is supported by friends; when the poor fal s, his friends push him away.
22 Il ricco che sbaglia ha molti difensori, se dice sciocchezze lo scusano; sbaglia il povero, lo condannano; parla con senno, non l'ascoltano.	22 When the rich slips, there are many hands to catch him, if he talks nonsense he is congratulated. Thepoor slips, and is blamed for it, he may talk good sense, but no room is made for him.
23 Parla il ricco e tutti tacciono, innalzano il suo dire fino al cielo; parla il povero e dicono: "Chi è costui?", se inciampa lo spingono a terra.	23 The rich speaks and everyone stops talking, and then they praise his discourse to the skies. The poorspeaks and people say, 'Who is this?' and if he stumbles, they trip him up yet more.
24 Buona è la ricchezza senza il peccato, la povertà è maledetta in bocca all'empio.	24 Wealth is good where there is no sin, poverty is evil, the godless say.
25 I sentimenti modificano il volto dell'uomo, sia per il bene sia per il male.	25 The heart moulds a person's expression whether for better or worse.
26 Il viso contento è segno di cuore soddisfatto, ma i proverbi si scoprono con riflessione e fatica.	26 Happy heart, cheerful expression; but wearisome work, inventing proverbs.
