Sirach 32

1 Have they appointed you as a leader? Do not be willing to be extolled. Be among them as one of them.	1 On t’a choisi pour présider le festin? Ne prends pas de grands airs. Sois avec les autres comme l’un d’entre eux; occupe-toi d’eux puis prends ta place simplement.
2 Have concern for them, and in this way sit down with them, and when you have explained all your concerns, sit back.	2 Quand tu auras fait tout le nécessaire, tu t’allongeras à ta place pour te réjouir avec eux. Alors tu recevras la couronne pour ta bonne organisation.
3 Then you may rejoice because of them, and you may receive a crown as an adornment of grace, and so obtain the dignity of the assembly.	3 Parle, si tu es ancien, cela te revient; mais sache ce que tu dis et n’empêche pas la musique.
4 Speak, you who are greater by birth. For it is fitting for you	4 Quand on est en train d’écouter, ce n’est pas le moment des discours, ne fais pas le sage à contretemps.
5 to speak the first word with careful knowledge. But you should not hinder the music.	5 Un concert au cours d’un banquet bien arrosé, c’est une pierre précieuse sur un bijou d’or.
6 Where no one is listening, you should not pour out words. And do not choose to be extolled improperly for your wisdom.	6 Le chant des musiciens vient sur la douceur du vin comme une émeraude sur sa monture d’or.
7 A gemstone of garnet is set amid an ornament of gold, and a concert of music is set amid a banquet of wine.	7 Parle, toi qui es jeune, si on te le demande, mais pas plus de deux fois, et pour répondre.
8 Just as a signet of emerald is set amid a work of gold, so is a melody of music set amid delightful and moderate wine.	8 Résume ton discours, dis beaucoup en peu de mots. Montre que tu sais, mais que tu sais te taire.
9 Listen silently, and for your reverence, good graces will be added to you.	9 Si tu es avec des gens importants, ne les traite pas d’égal à égal; ne bavarde pas pendant qu’un autre parle.
10 Young man, speak in your own case only reluctantly.	10 L’éclair part avant le tonnerre: quand arrive l’homme modeste, il est déjà attendu.
11 If you have been asked twice, let your response be concise.	11 Lève-toi de table dès qu’il est temps, ne t’attarde pas. Arrive vite chez toi sans traîner en chemin.
12 In many matters, be as if you lack knowledge, and listen silently as well as intently.	12 Là tu te changeras les idées, tu feras ce qui te plaît, mais sans pécher par des paroles insolentes.
13 In the midst of great men, you should not be presumptuous. And where the elders are present, you should not speak much.	13 Finalement tu béniras celui qui t’a fait et qui te comble de ses biens.
14 Lightning goes before a hailstorm, and grace goes before modesty. And so, for your reverence, good graces will be added to you.	14 Celui qui craint le Seigneur accepte ses leçons, ceux qui le cherchent dès l’aurore recevront bon accueil.
15 And at the hour for rising, you should not be lax. Later, be the first to run ahead to your house, and there withdraw, and there take your pastime.	15 Qui s’adonne à la Loi, elle le comblera; celui qui fait semblant, elle le fera tomber.
16 And act according to your intentions, but not in sin and not in arrogant speech.	16 Ceux qui craignent le Seigneur, il les recevra; leurs bonnes actions brilleront comme la lumière.
17 And for all these things, bless the Lord, who made you, and who fills you to overflowing with all his good things.	17 Le pécheur n’accepte pas la réprimande, il trouve toujours à justifier ce qui lui plaît.
18 Whoever fears the Lord will accept his doctrine. And whoever watches for him diligently will find a blessing.	18 L’homme prudent ne néglige pas la réflexion, mais l’orgueilleux indifférent n’a peur de rien.
19 Whoever seeks the law will be filled from the law. But whoever acts with treachery will be scandalized by treachery.	19 Ne fais rien sans avoir réfléchi, et tu ne te repentiras pas de tes actes.
20 Those who fear the Lord will find just judgment, and they will kindle justice like a light.	20 Ne prends pas le chemin raboteux et tu ne trébucheras pas sur les pierres.
21 A sinful man will shun correction, and he will find a rationalization in accord with his own will.	21 Ne te fie pas au chemin bien uni:
22 A man of counsel will not reject understanding. A strange and arrogant man will not be disturbed by fear.	22 garde-toi, même de tes enfants.
23 Even so, after he has acted out of fear and without counsel, he will be rebuked by his own criticism.	23 Dans tout ce que tu fais, agis selon ta conscience: c’est ainsi que tu observeras les commandements.
24 Son, you should do nothing without counsel, and then you will not regret what you have done.	24 Qui fait confiance à la Loi est attentif aux commandements; qui obéit au Seigneur ne subira aucun dommage.
25 You should not go into the way of ruin, and you then will not stumble on stones. You should not commit yourself to a laborious way; otherwise, you may set up a scandal against your own soul.
26 And be cautious concerning your own sons. And be attentive to those of your own household.
27 In all of your works, trust your soul to faith. For this is the keeping of the commandments.
28 Whoever believes God attends to the commandments. And whoever trusts in him will not be diminished.
