LXXNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
υπολαβων δε ιωβ λεγει1 Then Job said in reply:
ακουσατε ακουσατε μου των λογων ινα μη η μοι παρ' υμων αυτη η παρακλησις2 At least listen to my words, and let that be the consolation you offer.
αρατε με εγω δε λαλησω ειτ' ου καταγελασετε μου3 Bear with me while I speak; and after I have spoken, you can mock!
τι γαρ μη ανθρωπου μου η ελεγξις η δια τι ου θυμωθησομαι4 Is my complaint toward man? And why should I not be impatient?
εισβλεψαντες εις εμε θαυμασατε χειρα θεντες επι σιαγονι5 Look at me and be astonished, put your hands over your mouths.
εαν τε γαρ μνησθω εσπουδακα εχουσιν δε μου τας σαρκας οδυναι6 When I think of it, I am dismayed, and horror takes hold on my flesh.
δια τι ασεβεις ζωσιν πεπαλαιωνται δε και εν πλουτω7 Why do the wicked survive, grow old, become mighty in power?
ο σπορος αυτων κατα ψυχην τα δε τεκνα αυτων εν οφθαλμοις8 Their progeny is secure in their sight; they see before them their kinsfolk and their offspring.
οι οικοι αυτων ευθηνουσιν φοβος δε ουδαμου μαστιξ δε παρα κυριου ουκ εστιν επ' αυτοις9 Their homes are safe and without fear, nor is the scourge of God upon them.
η βους αυτων ουκ ωμοτοκησεν διεσωθη δε αυτων εν γαστρι εχουσα και ουκ εσφαλεν10 Their bulls gender without fail; their cows calve and do not miscarry.
μενουσιν δε ως προβατα αιωνια τα δε παιδια αυτων προσπαιζουσιν11 These folk have infants numerous as lambs, and their children dance.
αναλαβοντες ψαλτηριον και κιθαραν και ευφραινονται φωνη ψαλμου12 They sing to the timbrel and harp, and make merry to the sound of the flute.
συνετελεσαν δε εν αγαθοις τον βιον αυτων εν δε αναπαυσει αδου εκοιμηθησαν13 They live out their days in prosperity, and tranquilly go down to the nether world.
λεγει δε κυριω αποστα απ' εμου οδους σου ειδεναι ου βουλομαι14 Yet they say to God, "Depart from us, for we have no wish to learn your ways!
τι ικανος οτι δουλευσομεν αυτω και τις ωφελεια οτι απαντησομεν αυτω15 What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what gain shall we have if we pray to him?"
εν χερσιν γαρ ην αυτων τα αγαθα εργα δε ασεβων ουκ εφορα16 If their happiness is not in their own hands and if the counsel of the wicked is repulsive to God,
ου μην δε αλλα και ασεβων λυχνος σβεσθησεται επελευσεται δε αυτοις η καταστροφη ωδινες δε αυτους εξουσιν απο οργης17 How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does destruction come upon them, the portion he allots in his anger?
εσονται δε ωσπερ αχυρα προ ανεμου η ωσπερ κονιορτος ον υφειλατο λαιλαψ18 Let them be like straw before the wind, and like chaff which the storm snatches away!
εκλιποι υιους τα υπαρχοντα αυτου ανταποδωσει προς αυτον και γνωσεται19 May God not store up the man's misery for his children; let him requite the man himself so that he feels it,
ιδοισαν οι οφθαλμοι αυτου την εαυτου σφαγην απο δε κυριου μη διασωθειη20 Let his own eyes see the calamity, and the wrath of the Almighty let him drink!
οτι τι θελημα αυτου εν οικω αυτου μετ' αυτον και αριθμοι μηνων αυτου διηρεθησαν21 For what interest has he in his family after him, when the number of his months is finished?
ποτερον ουχι ο κυριος εστιν ο διδασκων συνεσιν και επιστημην αυτος δε φονους διακρινει22 Can anyone teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those on high?
ουτος αποθανειται εν κρατει απλοσυνης αυτου ολος δε ευπαθων και ευθηνων23 One dies in his full vigor, wholly at ease and content;
τα δε εγκατα αυτου πληρη στεατος μυελος δε αυτου διαχειται24 His figure is full and nourished, and his bones are rich in marrow.
ο δε τελευτα υπο πικριας ψυχης ου φαγων ουδεν αγαθον25 Another dies in bitterness of soul, having never tasted happiness.
ομοθυμαδον δε επι γης κοιμωνται σαπρια δε αυτους εκαλυψεν26 Alike they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.
ωστε οιδα υμας οτι τολμη επικεισθε μοι27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the arguments you rehearse against me.
οτι ερειτε που εστιν οικος αρχοντος και που εστιν η σκεπη των σκηνωματων των ασεβων28 For you say, "Where is the house of the magnate, and where the dwelling place of the wicked?"
ερωτησατε παραπορευομενους οδον και τα σημεια αυτων ουκ απαλλοτριωσετε29 Have you not asked the wayfarers and do you not recognize their monuments?
οτι εις ημεραν απωλειας κουφιζεται ο πονηρος εις ημεραν οργης αυτου απαχθησονται30 Nay, the evil man is spared calamity when it comes;
τις απαγγελει επι προσωπου αυτου την οδον αυτου και αυτος εποιησεν τις ανταποδωσει αυτω31 Who will charge him with his conduct to his face, and for what he has done who will repay him?
και αυτος εις ταφους απηνεχθη και επι σορω ηγρυπνησεν32 and on the day he is carried to the grave
εγλυκανθησαν αυτω χαλικες χειμαρρου και οπισω αυτου πας ανθρωπος απελευσεται και εμπροσθεν αυτου αναριθμητοι33 Sweet to him are the clods of the valley, and over him the funeral mound keeps watch, While all the line of mankind follows him, and the countless others who have gone before.
πως δε παρακαλειτε με κενα το δε εμε καταπαυσασθαι αφ' υμων ουδεν34 How then can you offer me vain comfort, while in your answers perfidy remains?
