KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
The elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.1 The Presbyter to the beloved Gaius whom I love in truth.
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.2 Beloved, I hope you are prospering in every respect and are in good health, just as your soul is prospering.
For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.3 I rejoiced greatly when some of the brothers came and testified to how truly you walk in the truth.
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.4 Nothing gives me greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;5 Beloved, you are faithful in all you do for the brothers, especially for strangers;
Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:6 they have testified to your love before the church. Please help them in a way worthy of God to continue their journey.
Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.7 For they have set out for the sake of the Name and are accepting nothing from the pagans.
We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.8 Therefore, we ought to support such persons, so that we may be co-workers in the truth.
I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to dominate, does not acknowledge us.
Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.10 Therefore, if I come, I will draw attention to what he is doing, spreading evil nonsense about us. And not content with that, he will not receive the brothers, hindering those who wish to do so and expelling them from the church.
Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.11 Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does what is good is of God; whoever does what is evil has never seen God.
Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.12 Demetrius receives a good report from all, even from the truth itself. We give our testimonial as well, and you know our testimony is true.
I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:13 I have much to write to you, but I do not wish to write with pen and ink.
But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face.14 Instead, I hope to see you soon, when we can talk face to face.
Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.15 Peace be with you. The friends greet you; greet the friends there each by name.
