Première épître de Pierre 3

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Pareillement, vous les femmes, soyez soumises à vos maris, afin que, même si quelques-unsrefusent de croire à la Parole, ils soient, sans parole, gagnés par la conduite de leurs femmes,	1 In the same way, you wives should be obedient to your husbands. Then if there are some husbandswho do not believe the Word, they may find themselves won over, without a word spoken, by the way their wivesbehave,
2 en considérant votre vie chaste et pleine de respect.	2 when they see the reverence and purity of your way of life.
3 Que votre parure ne soit pas extérieure, faite de cheveux tressés, de cercles d'or et de toilettes bienajustées,	3 Your adornment should be not an exterior one, consisting of braided hair or gold jewellery or fineclothing,
4 mais à l'intérieur de votre coeur dans l'incorruptibilité d'une âme douce et calme: voilà ce qui estprécieux devant Dieu.	4 but the interior disposition of the heart, consisting in the imperishable quality of a gentle and peacefulspirit, so precious in the sight of God.
5 C'est ainsi qu'autrefois les saintes femmes qui espéraient en Dieu se paraient, soumises à leursmaris:	5 That was how the holy women of the past dressed themselves attractively -- they hoped in God andwere submissive to their husbands;
6 telle Sara obéissait à Abraham, en l'appelant son Seigneur. C'est d'elle que vous êtes devenues lesenfants, si vous agissez bien, sans terreur et sans aucun trouble.	6 like Sarah, who was obedient to Abraham, and cal ed him her lord. You are now her children, as longas you live good lives free from fear and worry.
7 Vous pareillement, les maris, menez la vie commune avec compréhension, comme auprès d'un êtreplus fragile, la femme; accordez-lui sa part d'honneur, comme cohéritière de la grâce de Vie. Ainsi vos prières neseront pas entravées.	7 In the same way, husbands must always treat their wives with consideration in their life together,respecting a woman as one who, though she may be the weaker partner, is equal y an heir to the generous giftof life. This wil prevent anything from coming in the way of your prayers.
8 Enfin, vous tous, en esprit d'union, dans la compassion, l'amour fraternel, la miséricorde, l'espritd'humilité,	8 Final y: you should al agree among yourselves and be sympathetic; love the brothers, havecompassion and be self-effacing.
9 ne rendez pas mal pour mal, insulte pour insulte. Bénissez, au contraire, car c'est à cela que vousavez été appelés, afin d'hériter la bénédiction.	9 Never repay one wrong with another, or one abusive word with another; instead, repay with a blessing.That is what you are cal ed to do, so that you inherit a blessing.
10 Qui veut, en effet, aimer la vie et voir des jours heureux doit garder sa langue du mal et ses lèvresdes paroles fourbes,	10 For Who among you delights in life, longs for time to enjoy prosperity? Guard your tongue from evil,your lips from any breath of deceit.
11 s'éloigner du mal et faire le bien, chercher la paix et la poursuivre.	11 Turn away from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it.
12 Car le Seigneur a les yeux sur les justes et tend l'oreille à leur prière, mais le Seigneur tourne saface contre ceux qui font le mal.	12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the upright, his ear turned to their cry. But the Lord's face is setagainst those who do evil.
13 Et qui vous ferait du mal, si vous devenez zélés pour le bien?	13 No one can hurt you if you are determined to do only what is right;
14 Heureux d'ailleurs quand vous souffririez pour la justice! N'ayez d'eux aucune crainte et ne soyezpas troublés.	14 and blessed are you if you have to suffer for being upright. Have no dread of them; have no fear.
15 Au contraire, sanctifiez dans vos coeurs le Seigneur Christ, toujours prêts à la défense contrequiconque vous demande raison de l'espérance qui est en vous.	15 Simply proclaim the Lord Christ holy in your hearts, and always have your answer ready for peoplewho ask you the reason for the hope that you have.
16 Mais que ce soit avec douceur et respect, en possession d'une bonne conscience, afin que, sur lepoint même où l'on vous calomnie, soient confondus ceux qui décrient votre bonne conduite dans le Christ.	16 But give it with courtesy and respect and with a clear conscience, so that those who slander your goodbehaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their accusations.
17 Car mieux vaudrait souffrir en faisant le bien, si telle était la volonté de Dieu, qu'en faisant le mal.	17 And if it is the wil of God that you should suffer, it is better to suffer for doing right than for doingwrong.
18 Le Christ lui-même est mort une fois pour les péchés, juste pour des injustes, afin de nous mener àDieu. Mis à mort selon la chair, il a été vivifié selon l'esprit.	18 Christ himself died once and for al for sins, the upright for the sake of the guilty, to lead us to God. Inthe body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life,
19 C'est en lui qu'il s'en alla même prêcher aux esprits en prison,	19 and, in the spirit, he went to preach to the spirits in prison.
20 à ceux qui jadis avaient refusé de croire lorsque temporisait la longanimité de Dieu, aux jours oùNoé construisait l'Arche, dans laquelle un petit nombre, en tout huit personnes, furent sauvées à travers l'eau.	20 They refused to believe long ago, while God patiently waited to receive them, in Noah's time when theark was being built. In it only a few, that is eight souls, were saved through water.
21 Ce qui y correspond, c'est le baptême qui vous sauve à présent et qui n'est pas l'enlèvement d'unesouillure charnelle, mais l'engagement à Dieu d'une bonne conscience par la résurrection de Jésus Christ,	21 It is the baptism corresponding to this water which saves you now -- not the washing off of physical dirtbut the pledge of a good conscience given to God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
22 lui qui, passé au ciel, est à la droite de Dieu, après s'être soumis les Anges, les Dominations et lesPuissances.	22 who has entered heaven and is at God's right hand, with angels, ruling forces and powers subject tohim.
