JERUSALEM	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 En effet, ce Melchisédech, roi de Salem, prêtre du Dieu Très-Haut, qui se porta à la rencontred'Abraham s'en retournant après la défaite des rois, et qui le bénit;	1 For this Melchisedech was king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him:
2 à qui aussi Abraham attribua la dîme de tout, dont on interprète d'abord le nom comme "roi dejustice" et qui est aussi roi de Salem, c'est-à-dire "roi de paix",	2 To whom also Abraham divided the tithes of all: who first indeed by interpretation, is king of justice: and then also king of Salem, that is, king of peace:
3 qui est sans père, sans mère, sans généalogie, dont les jours n'ont pas de commencement et dont lavie n'a pas de fin, qui est assimilé au Fils de Dieu, ce Melchisédech demeure prêtre pour toujours.	3 Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but likened unto the Son of God, continueth a priest for ever.
4 Considérez donc comme il est grand celui à qui Abraham donna aussi la dîme du meilleur butin, luile Patriarche.	4 Now consider how great this man is, to whom also Abraham the patriarch gave tithes out of the principal things.
5 Et à la vérité, ceux des fils de Lévi qui reçoivent la prêtrise ont ordre, selon la Loi, de lever la dîmesur le peuple, c'est-à-dire sur leurs frères qui sont pourtant eux aussi sortis des reins d'Abraham.	5 And indeed they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is to say, of their brethren: though they themselves also came out of the loins of Abraham.
6 Mais celui qui n'était pas de leur lignée a levé la dîme sur Abraham, et il a béni le détenteur despromesses.	6 But he, whose pedigree is not numbered among them, received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.
7 Or, sans aucun doute, c'est l'inférieur qui est béni par le supérieur.	7 And without all contradiction, that which is less, is blessed by the better.
8 De plus, ici ce sont des hommes mortels qui perçoivent les dîmes, mais là c'est celui dont on attestequ'il vit.	8 And here indeed, men that die, receive thithes: but there he hath witness, that he liveth.
9 Enfin c'est pour ainsi dire Lévi lui-même, lui qui perçoit la dîme, qui se trouve l'avoir payée en lapersonne d'Abraham;	9 And (as it may be said) even Levi who received tithes, paid tithes in Abraham:
10 car il était encore dans les reins de son aïeul, lorsque Melchisédech se porta à sa rencontre.	10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedech met him.
11 Si donc la perfection était réalisée par le sacerdoce lévitique - car c'est sur lui que repose la Loidonnée au peuple --, quel besoin y avait-il encore que se présentât un autre prêtre selon l'ordre de Melchisédechet qu'il ne fût pas dit "selon l'ordre d'Aaron" --	11 If then perfection was by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchisedech, and not be called according to the order of Aaron?
12 En effet, changé le sacerdoce, nécessairement se produit aussi un changement de Loi. --	12 For the priesthood being translated, it is necessary that a translation also be made of the law.
13 Car celui dont ces choses sont dites appartenait à une autre tribu, dont aucun membre ne s'estjamais occupé du service de l'autel.	13 For he, of whom these things are spoken, is of another tribe, of which no one attended on the altar.
14 Il est notoire, en effet, que notre Seigneur est issu de Juda, tribu dont Moïse n'a rien dit quand iltraite des prêtres.	14 For it is evident that our Lord sprung out of Juda: in which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priests.
15 Cela devient encore plus évident si, à la ressemblance de Melchisédech, se présente un autreprêtre,	15 And it is yet far more evident: if according to the similitude of Melchisedech there ariseth another priest,
16 qui ne l'est pas devenu selon la règle d'une prescription charnelle, mais bien selon la puissanced'une vie impérissable.	16 Who is made not according to the law of a carnal commandment, but according to the power of an indissoluble life:
17 Ce témoignage, en effet, lui est rendu: Tu es prêtre pour l'éternité selon l'ordre de Melchisédech.	17 For he testifieth: Thou art a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchisedech.
18 Ainsi se trouve abrogée la prescription antérieure, en raison de sa faiblesse et de son inutilité --	18 There is indeed a setting aside of the former commandment, because of the weakness and unprofitableness thereof:
19 car la Loi n'a rien amené à la perfection - et introduite une espérance meilleure, par laquelle nousapprochons de Dieu.	19 (For the law brought nothing to perfection,) but a bringing in of a better hope, by which we draw nigh to God.
20 D'autant plus que cela ne s'est pas fait sans serment. Les autres, en effet, sont devenus prêtres sansserment;	20 And inasmuch as it is not without an oath, (for the others indeed were made priests without an oath;
21 mais celui-ci l'a été avec serment, par Celui qui lui a dit: "Le Seigneur a juré, et il ne s'en repentirapas: Tu es prêtre pour l'éternité."	21 But this with an oath, by him that said unto him: The Lord hath sworn, and he will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever.)
22 Et par suite c'est d'une alliance meilleure que Jésus est devenu garant.	22 By so much is Jesus made a surety of a better testament.
23 De plus, ceux-là sont devenus prêtres en grand nombre, parce que la mort les empêchait de durer;	23 And the others indeed were made many priests, because by reason of death they were not suffered to continue:
24 mais lui, du fait qu'il demeure pour l'éternité, il a un sacerdoce immuable.	24 But this, for that he continueth for ever, hath an everlasting priesthood,
25 D'où il suit qu'il est capable de sauver de façon définitive ceux qui par lui s'avancent vers Dieu,étant toujours vivant pour intercéder en leur faveur.	25 Whereby he is able also to save for ever them that come to God by him; always living to make intercession for us.
26 Oui, tel est précisément le grand prêtre qu'il nous fallait, saint, innocent, immaculé, séparédésormais des pécheurs, élevé plus haut que les cieux,	26 For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
27 qui ne soit pas journellement dans la nécessité, comme les grands prêtres, d'offrir des victimesd'abord pour ses propres péchés, ensuite pour ceux du peuple, car ceci il l'a fait une fois pour toutes en s'offrantlui-même.	27 Who needeth not daily (as the other priests) to offer sacrifices first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, in offering himself.
28 La Loi, en effet, établit comme grands prêtres des hommes sujets à la faiblesse; mais la parole duserment - postérieur à la Loi - établit le Fils rendu parfait pour l'éternité.	28 For the law maketh men priests, who have infirmity: but the word of the oath, which was since the law, the Son who is perfected for evermore.
