1 Trois jours après son arrivée dans la province, Festus monta de Césarée à Jérusalem.	1 And so, when Festus had arrived in the province, after three days, he ascended to Jerusalem from Caesarea.
2 Les grands prêtres et les notables juifs se constituèrent devant lui accusateurs de Paul. Lui présentantleur requête	2 And the leaders of the priests, and those first among the Jews, went to him against Paul. And they were petitioning him,
3 contre celui-ci, ils sollicitaient comme une faveur qu'il fût transféré à Jérusalem; ils préparaient unguet-apens pour le tuer en chemin.	3 asking for favor against him, so that he would order him to be led to Jerusalem, where they were maintaining an ambush in order to kill him along the way.
4 Mais Festus répondit que Paul devait rester en prison à Césarée, que lui-même d'ailleurs allait partirtout de suite.	4 But Festus responded that Paul was to be kept in Caesarea, and that he himself would soon go there.
5 "Que ceux donc d'entre vous qui ont qualité, dit-il, descendent avec moi et, si cet homme estcoupable en quelque manière, qu'ils le mettent en accusation."	5 “Therefore,” he said, “let those among you who are able, descend at the same time, and if there is any guilt in the man, they may accuse him.”
6 Après avoir passé chez eux huit à dix jours au plus, il descendit à Césarée et, siégeant au tribunal lelendemain, il fit amener Paul.	6 Then, having stayed among them no more than eight or ten days, he descended to Caesarea. And on the next day, he sat in the judgment seat, and he ordered Paul to be led in.
7 Quand celui-ci fut arrivé, les Juifs descendus de Jérusalem l'entourèrent, portant contre lui desaccusations multiples et graves, qu'ils n'étaient pas capables de prouver.	7 And when he had been brought, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, throwing out many serious accusations, none of which they were able to prove.
8 Paul se défendait: "Je n'ai, disait-il, commis aucune faute contre la Loi des Juifs, ni contre le Temple,ni contre César."	8 Paul offered this defense: “Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar, have I offended in any matter.”
9 Voulant faire plaisir aux Juifs, Festus répondit à Paul: "Veux-tu monter à Jérusalem pour y être jugélà-dessus en ma présence?"	9 But Festus, wanting to show greater favor to the Jews, responded to Paul by saying: “Are you willing to ascend to Jerusalem and to be judged there about these things before me?”
10 Mais Paul répliqua: "Je suis devant le tribunal de César; c'est là que je dois être jugé. Je n'ai faitaucun tort aux Juifs, tu le sais très bien toi-même.	10 But Paul said: “I stand in Caesar’s tribunal, which is where I ought to be judged. I have done no harm to the Jews, as you well know.
11 Mais si je suis réellement coupable, si j'ai commis quelque crime qui mérite la mort, je ne refusepas de mourir. Si, par contre, il n'y a rien de fondé dans les accusations de ces gens-là contre moi, nul n'a le droitde me céder à eux. J'en appelle à César!"	11 For if I have harmed them, or if I have done anything deserving of death, I do not object to dying. But if there is nothing to these things about which they accuse me, no one is able to deliver me to them. I appeal to Caesar.”
12 Alors Festus, après en avoir conféré avec son conseil, répondit: "Tu en appelles à César, tu irasdevant César."	12 Then Festus, having spoken with the council, responded: “You have appealed to Caesar, to Caesar you shall go.”
13 Quelques jours plus tard, le roi Agrippa et Bérénice arrivèrent à Césarée et vinrent saluer Festus.	13 And when some days had passed, king Agrippa and Bernice descended to Caesarea, to greet Festus.
14 Comme leur séjour se prolongeait, Festus exposa au roi l'affaire de Paul: "Il y a ici, dit-il, unhomme que Félix a laissé en captivité.	14 And since they remained there for many days, Festus spoke to the king about Paul, saying: “A certain man was left behind as a prisoner by Felix.
15 Pendant que j'étais à Jérusalem, les grands prêtres et les anciens des Juifs ont porté plainte à sonsujet, demandant sa condamnation.	15 When I was at Jerusalem, the leaders of the priests and the elders of the Jews came to me about him, asking for condemnation against him.
16 Je leur ai répondu que les Romains n'ont pas l'habitude de céder un homme avant que, ayant étéaccusé, il ait eu ses accusateurs en face de lui et qu'on lui ait donné la possibilité de se défendre contrel'inculpation.	16 I answered them that it is not the custom of the Romans to condemn any man, before he who is being accused has been confronted by his accusers and has received the opportunity to defend himself, so as to clear himself of the charges.
17 Ils sont donc venus ici avec moi, et, sans y apporter aucun délai, dès le lendemain, j'ai siégé à montribunal et fait amener l'homme.	17 Therefore, when they had arrived here, without any delay, on the following day, sitting in the judgment seat, I ordered the man to be brought.
18 Mis en sa présence, les accusateurs n'ont soulevé aucun grief concernant des forfaits que, pour mapart, j'aurais soupçonnés.	18 But when the accusers had stood up, they did not present any accusation about him from which I would suspect evil.
19 Ils avaient seulement avec lui je ne sais quelles contestations touchant leur religion à eux ettouchant un certain Jésus, qui est mort, et que Paul affirme être en vie.	19 Instead, they brought against him certain disputes about their own superstition and about a certain Jesus, who had died, but whom Paul asserted to be alive.
20 Pour moi, embarrassé devant un débat de ce genre, je lui ai demandé s'il voulait aller à Jérusalempour y être jugé là-dessus.	20 Therefore, being in doubt about this kind of question, I asked him if he was willing go to Jerusalem and to be judged there about these things.
21 Mais Paul ayant interjeté appel pour que son cas fût réservé au jugement de l'auguste empereur, j'aiordonné de le garder jusqu'à ce que je l'envoie à César."	21 But since Paul was appealing to be kept for a decision before Augustus, I ordered him to be kept, until I might send him to Caesar.”
22 Agrippa dit à Festus: "Je voudrais, moi aussi, entendre cet homme" - "Demain, dit-il, tul'entendras."	22 Then Agrippa said to Festus: “I myself also want to hear the man.” “Tomorrow,” he said, “you shall hear him.”
23 Le lendemain donc, Agrippa et Bérénice vinrent en grande pompe et se rendirent à la salled'audience, entourés des tribuns et des notabilités de la ville. Sur l'ordre de Festus, on amena Paul.	23 And on the next day, when Agrippa and Bernice had arrived with great ostentation and had entered into the auditorium with the tribunes and the principal men of the city, Paul was brought in, at the order of Festus.
24 Festus dit alors: "Roi Agrippa et vous tous ici présents avec nous, vous voyez cet homme au sujetduquel la communauté juive tout entière est intervenue auprès de moi, tant à Jérusalem qu'ici, protestant à grandscris qu'il ne fallait pas le laisser vivre davantage.	24 And Festus said: “King Agrippa, and all who are present together with us, you see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews disturbed me at Jerusalem, petitioning and clamoring that he should not be allowed to live any longer.
25 Pour moi, j'ai reconnu qu'il n'a rien fait qui mérite la mort; cependant, comme il en a lui-mêmeappelé à l'auguste empereur, j'ai décidé de le lui envoyer.	25 Truly, I have discovered nothing brought forth against him that is worthy of death. But since he himself has appealed to Augustus, it was my judgment to send him.
26 Je n'ai rien de bien précis à écrire au Seigneur sur son compte; c'est pourquoi je l'ai fait comparaîtredevant vous, devant toi surtout, roi Agrippa, afin qu'après cet interrogatoire, j'aie quelque chose à écrire.	26 But I have not determined what to write to the emperor about him. Because of this, I have brought him before you all, and especially before you, O king Agrippa, so that, once an inquiry has occurred, I may have something to write.
27 Il me paraît absurde, en effet, d'envoyer un prisonnier sans indiquer en même temps les charges quipèsent sur lui."	27 For it seems to me unreasonable to send a prisoner and not to indicate the accusations set against him.”
