JERUSALEMNEW JERUSALEM
En ce temps-là, la renommée de Jésus parvint aux oreilles d'Hérode le tétrarque,1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the reputation of Jesus
Le voilà ressuscité des morts: d'où lespouvoirs miraculeux qui se déploient en sa personne!"2 and said to his court, 'This is John the Baptist himself; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.'
C'est qu'en effet Hérode avait fait arrêter, enchaîner et emprisonner Jean, à cause d'Hérodiade, lafemme de Philippe son frère.3 Now it was Herod who had arrested John, chained him up and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
Car Jean lui disait: "Il ne t'est pas permis de l'avoir."4 For John had told him, 'It is against the Law for you to have her.'
He had wanted to kil him but was afraid of the people, who regarded John as a prophet.
Or, comme Hérode célébrait son anniversaire de naissance, la fille d'Hérodiade dansa en public etplut à Hérode6 Then, during the celebrations for Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before thecompany and so delighted Herod
au point qu'il s'engagea par serment à lui donner ce qu'elle demanderait.7 that he promised on oath to give her anything she asked.
Endoctrinée par sa mère, elle lui dit: "Donne-moi ici, sur un plat, la tête de Jean le Baptiste."8 Prompted by her mother she said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head, here, on a dish.'
Le roi fut contristé, mais, à cause de ses serments et des convives, il commanda de la lui donner9 The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to begiven her,
et envoya décapiter Jean dans la prison.10 and sent and had John beheaded in the prison.
Sa tête fut apportée sur un plat et donnée à la jeune fille, qui la porta à sa mère.11 The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl, who took it to her mother.
Les disciples de Jean vinrent prendre le cadavre et l'enterrèrent; puis ils allèrent informer Jésus.12 John's disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.
When Jesus received this news he withdrew by boat to a lonely place where they could be bythemselves. But the crowds heard of this and, leaving the towns, went after him on foot.
So as he stepped ashore he saw a large crowd; and he took pity on them and healed their sick.
When evening came, the disciples went to him and said, 'This is a lonely place, and time has slippedby; so send the people away, and they can go to the vil ages to buy themselves some food.'
There is no need for them to go: give them something to eat yourselves.'
"Mais, lui disent-ils, nous n'avons ici que cinq pains et deux poissons." Il dit:17 But they answered, 'All we have with us is five loaves and two fish.'
"Apportez-les moi ici."18 So he said, 'Bring them here to me.'
He gave orders that the people were to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and thetwo fish, raised his eyes to heaven and said the blessing. And breaking the loaves he handed them to hisdisciples, who gave them to the crowds.
Tous mangèrent et furent rassasiés, et l'on emporta le reste des morceaux: douze pleins couffins!20 They al ate as much as they wanted, and they col ected the scraps left over, twelve baskets full.
Now about five thousand men had eaten, to say nothing of women and children.
And at once he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he sentthe crowds away.
Le soir venu, ilétait là, seul.23 After sending the crowds away he went up into the hil s by himself to pray. When evening came, hewas there alone,
La barque, elle, se trouvait déjà éloignée de la terre de plusieurs stades, harcelée par les vagues, car le vent était contraire.24 while the boat, by now some furlongs from land, was hard pressed by rough waves, for there was ahead-wind.
A la quatrième veille de la nuit, il vint vers eux en marchant sur la mer.25 In the fourth watch of the night he came towards them, walking on the sea,
Les disciples, le voyant marcher sur la mer, furent troublés: "C'est un fantôme", disaient-ils, etpris de peur ils se mirent à crier.26 and when the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. 'It is a ghost,' they said, andcried out in fear.
But at once Jesus cal ed out to them, saying, 'Courage! It's me! Don't be afraid.'
Sur quoi, Pierre lui répondit: "Seigneur, si c'est bien toi, donne-moi l'ordre de venir à toi sur leseaux" --28 It was Peter who answered. 'Lord,' he said, 'if it is you, tel me to come to you across the water.'
"Viens", dit Jésus. Et Pierre, descendant de la barque, se mit à marcher sur les eaux et vint versJésus.29 Jesus said, 'Come.' Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across thewater,
Mais, voyant le vent, il prit peur et, commençant à couler, il s'écria: "Seigneur, sauve-moi!"30 but then noticing the wind, he took fright and began to sink. 'Lord,' he cried, 'save me!'
Aussitôt Jésus tendit la main et le saisit, en lui disant: "Homme de peu de foi, pourquoi as-tudouté?"31 Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. 'You have so little faith,' he said, 'why did you doubt?'
Et quand ils furent montés dans la barque, le vent tomba.32 And as they got into the boat the wind dropped.
Ceux qui étaient dans la barque se prosternèrent devant lui, en disant: "Vraiment, tu es Fils deDieu!"33 The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, 'Truly, you are the Son of God.'
Ayant achevé la traversée, ils touchèrent terre à Gennésaret.34 Having made the crossing, they came to land at Gennesaret.
Les gens de l'endroit, l'ayant reconnu, mandèrent la nouvelle à tout le voisinage, et on luiprésenta tous les malades:35 When the local people recognised him they spread the news through the whole neighbourhood andtook al that were sick to him,
on le priait de les laisser simplement toucher la frange de son manteau, et tous ceux quitouchèrent furent sauvés.36 begging him just to let them touch the fringe of his cloak. And al those who touched it were saved.
