1 Les fils de Ruben et les fils de Gad avaient de grands troupeaux, très importants. Or ils virent quele pays de Yazèr et le pays de Galaad étaient une région propice à l'élevage.	1 Now the sons of Ruben and of Gad had many herds, and their substance in cattle was inestimable. And when they had seen that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for feeding animals,
2 Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben vinrent donc trouver Moïse, Eléazar le prêtre et les princes dela communauté, et leur dirent:	2 they went to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest and the leaders of the multitude, and they said:
3 "Atarot, Dibôn, Yazèr, Nimra, Heshbôn, Eléalé, Sebam, Nebo et Meôn,	3 “Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Sebam, and Nebo, and Beon,
4 ce pays que Yahvé a conquis devant la communauté d'Israël, ce pays est propice à l'élevage, ettes serviteurs élèvent du bétail."	4 the land, which the Lord has struck in the sight of the sons of Israel, is a very fertile region for pasturing animals. And we, your servants, have very many cattle.
5 Ils dirent: "Si nous avons trouvé grâce à tes yeux, que ce pays soit donné en propriété à tesserviteurs; ne nous fais pas passer le Jourdain."	5 And so we beseech you, if we have found favor before you, that you give it to us, your subjects, as a possession, and that you not cause us cross the Jordan.”
6 Moïse répondit aux fils de Gad et aux fils de Ruben: "Vos frères iraient au combat et vousresteriez ici?	6 And Moses answered them: “Should your brothers go to battle, while you sit here?
7 Pourquoi découragez-vous les Israélites de passer dans le pays que Yahvé leur a donné?	7 Why do you subvert the minds of the sons of Israel, so that they might not dare to cross into the place which the Lord will give to them?
8 Ainsi firent vos pères quand je les envoyai de Cadès-Barné voir le pays.	8 Did not your fathers act in the same way, when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to explore the land?
9 Ils montèrent jusqu'au val d'Eshkol, ils virent le pays, puis ils découragèrent les Israélites, desorte qu'ils n'allèrent pas au pays que Yahvé leur avait donné.	9 And when they had gone all the way to the Valley of the Cluster of Grapes, having viewed the entire region, they subverted the hearts of the sons of Israel, so that they would not enter into the parts that the Lord gave to them.
10 Aussi la colère de Yahvé s'enflamma-t-elle ce jour-là, et il fit ce serment:	10 And being angry, the Lord swore an oath, saying:
11 Si jamais ces hommes, qui sont sortis d'Egypte et qui ont l'âge de vingt ans au moins, voient lepays que j'ai promis par serment à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob..., car ils ne m'ont pas suivi sans défaillance,	11 ‘These men, who ascended out of Egypt, from twenty years and above, will not see the land, which I have promised under an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For they were not willing to follow me,
12 sauf Caleb, fils de Yephunné le Qenizzite, et Josué, fils de Nûn: eux certes ont suivi Yahvé sansdéfaillance!	12 except Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua the son of Nun; these have fulfilled my will.’
13 La colère de Yahvé s'enflamma contre Israël et il les fit errer 40 ans dans le désert, jusqu'à ceque disparût tout entière cette génération qui avait fait ce qui déplaît à Yahvé.	13 And the Lord, being angry against Israel, led them in a course through the desert for forty years, until the entire generation, which had done evil in his sight, was consumed.
14 Et voici que vous vous levez à la place de vos pères comme le surgeon d'une souche depécheurs, pour attiser encore l'ardeur de la colère de Yahvé contre Israël!	14 And behold,” he said, “you have risen up in the place of your fathers, the offshoots and the nurslings of sinful men, in order to augment the fury of the Lord against Israel.
15 Si vous vous détournez de lui, il fera durer encore le séjour au désert, et vous aurez causé laperte de tout ce peuple."	15 But if you are not willing to follow him, he will leave the people behind in the wilderness, and you will have been the cause of all our deaths.”
16 Ils s'approchèrent de Moïse et lui dirent: "Nous voudrions construire ici des parcs à moutonspour nos troupeaux et des villes pour nos petits enfants.	16 But approaching closer, they said: “We will manufacture sheep pens and cattle stalls, as well as fortified cities, for our little ones.
17 Mais nous-mêmes, nous prendrons les armes à la tête des Israélites, jusqu'à ce que nous ayonspu les conduire au lieu qui leur est destiné; ce sont nos petits enfants qui resteront dans les villes fortes, à l'abrides habitants du pays.	17 But we ourselves will continue on, armed and girded for battle, before the sons of Israel, until we lead them to their places. Our little ones, and whatever we may be able to have, shall be in walled cities, because of the treachery of the inhabitants.
18 Nous ne rentrerons pas chez nous avant que chacun des Israélites n'ait pris possession de sonhéritage.	18 We will not return to our houses, even until the sons of Israel may possess their inheritance.
19 Car nous ne posséderons pas d'héritage avec eux sur l'autre rive du Jourdain ni plus loin,puisque notre héritage nous sera échu au-delà du Jourdain, à l'orient."	19 Neither will we seek anything across the Jordan, because we already have our possession on its eastern side.”
20 Moïse leur dit: "Si vous mettez ces paroles en pratique, si vous êtes prêts au combat devantYahvé	20 And Moses said to them: “If you accomplish what you have promised, you may go out, equipped for battle, before the Lord.
21 et si tous ceux d'entre vous qui portent les armes passent le Jourdain devant Yahvé, jusqu'à cequ'il ait chassé devant lui tous ses ennemis,	21 And let every fighting man cross over the Jordan, until the Lord overthrows his enemies,
22 alors, quand le pays aura été soumis à Yahvé, vous pourrez vous en retourner; vous serez quittesenvers Yahvé et envers Israël, et ce pays-ci sera votre propriété devant Yahvé.	22 and all the land is subjected to him. Then you will be guiltless with the Lord and with Israel, and you will obtain the regions which you desire before the Lord.
23 Mais si vous n'agissez pas ainsi, vous pécherez contre Yahvé, et sachez que votre péché voustrouvera.	23 But if you do not do what you have said, no one could doubt that you will have sinned against God. And know this: your sin shall overtake you.
24 Construisez donc des villes pour vos enfants et des parcs pour votre petit bétail; mais ce quevous avez promis, faites-le."	24 Therefore, build cities for your little ones, and pens and stables for your sheep and cattle; and fulfill what you have promised.”
25 Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben dirent à Moïse: "Tes serviteurs feront ce que Monseigneur aprescrit.	25 And the sons of Gad and of Ruben said to Moses: “We are your servants, we shall do what you, our ruler, orders.
26 Nos enfants, nos femmes, nos troupeaux, et tout notre bétail sont là, dans les villes de Galaad,	26 We will leave behind our little ones, and our wives, and the sheep and cattle, in the cities of Gilead.
27 mais tes serviteurs, tous ceux qui sont armés pour la campagne, passeront, devant Yahvé, pourcombattre comme l'a dit Monseigneur."	27 And we, your servants, all well-equipped, will go forth to battle, just as you, our ruler, has spoken.”
28 Alors Moïse donna des ordres à leur sujet à Eléazar le prêtre, à Josué, fils de Nûn, et aux chefsde familles des tribus d'Israël.	28 Therefore, Moses instructed Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the princes of the families throughout the tribes of Israel, and he said to them:
29 Moïse leur dit: "Si les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben, tous ceux qui portent les armes, passentavec vous le Jourdain pour combattre devant Yahvé, quand le pays vous aura été soumis vous leur donnerez enpropriété le pays de Galaad.	29 “If the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben cross over the Jordan with you, all armed for war before the Lord, and if the land becomes subject to you, give them Gilead as a possession.
30 Mais s'ils ne passent pas en armes avec vous, c'est au pays de Canaan qu'ils recevront au milieude vous leur propriété."	30 But if they are not willing to cross with you, armed, into the land of Canaan, then let them receive places among you for their dwellings.”
31 Les fils de Gad et les fils de Ruben répondirent: "Ce que Yahvé a dit à tes serviteurs, nous leferons.	31 And the sons of Gad and the sons of Ruben responded: “Just as the Lord has spoken to his servants, so shall we do.
32 Nous, nous passerons en armes devant Yahvé en terre de Canaan; toi, mets-nous en possessionde notre héritage au-delà du Jourdain."	32 We will go forth, armed, before the Lord into the land of Canaan; and we acknowledge that we have already received our possession across the Jordan.”
33 Moïse leur donna -- aux fils de Gad, aux fils de Ruben et à la demi-tribu de Manassé, fils deJoseph -- le royaume de Sihôn, roi des Amorites, le royaume d'Og, roi du Bashân, le pays avec les villescomprises dans son territoire, les villes-frontières du pays.	33 And so, Moses gave to the sons of Gad and of Ruben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og, king of Bashan, and their land with its surrounding cities.
34 Les fils de Gad construisirent Dibôn, Atarot et Aroër,	34 Therefore, the sons of Gad built up Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
35 Atrot-Shophân, Yazèr, Yogboha,	35 and Atroth and Shophan, and Jazer, and Jogbehah,
36 Bet-Nimra, Bet-Harân, villes fortes, et des parcs pour le petit bétail.	36 and Beth-Nimrah, and Beth-Haran, as fortified cities with pens for their cattle.
37 Les fils de Ruben construisirent Heshbôn, Eléalé, Qiryatayim,	37 Yet truly, the sons of Ruben built up Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,
38 Nebo, Baal-Meôn (dont les noms furent changés), Sibma. Ils donnèrent des noms aux villesqu'ils avaient construites.	38 and Nebo, and Baal-meon (their names having been changed) and Sibmah, appointing names for the cities which they had built.
39 Les fils de Makir, fils de Manassé, partirent en Galaad. Ils le conquirent et chassèrent lesAmorites qui s'y trouvaient.	39 Moreover, the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, continued on within Gilead, and they devastated it, putting to death its inhabitant, the Amorite.
40 Moïse donna Galaad à Makir, fils de Manassé, qui s'y établit.	40 Therefore, Moses gave the land of Gilead to Machir, the son of Manasseh, and he lived in it.
41 Yaïr, fils de Manassé, alla s'emparer de leurs douars et les appela Douars de Yaïr.	41 But Jair, the son of Manasseh, went out and occupied its villages, which he called Havoth Jair, that is, the Villages of Jair.
42 Nobah alla s'emparer de Qenat et des villes de son ressort, et l'appela de son propre nom,Nobah.	42 Likewise, Nobah went forth and captured Kenath with its villages. And he called it by his own name, Nobah.
