1 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:	1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
2 "Accomplis la vengeance des Israélites sur les Madianites. Ensuite tu seras réuni aux tiens."	2 “First, avenge the sons of Israel from the Midianites, and then you shall be gathered to your people.”
3 Moïse parla ainsi au peuple: "Que certains d'entre vous s'arment pour la campagne de Yahvécontre Madiân, pour payer à Madiân le salaire de la vengeance de Yahvé.	3 And immediately Moses said: “Arm the men among you for a battle, so that they may be able to fulfill the retribution of the Lord on the Midianites.
4 Vous mettrez en campagne mille hommes pour chacune des tribus d'Israël."	4 Let one thousand men be chosen from each tribe of Israel, who shall be sent to war.”
5 Les milliers d'Israël fournirent, à raison d'un millier par tribu, 12.000 hommes armés pour lacampagne.	5 And they gave one thousand from each tribe, that is, twelve thousand foot soldiers for battle.
6 Moïse les mit en campagne, un millier par tribu, et leur joignit Pinhas, fils d'Eléazar le prêtre,porteur des objets sacrés et des trompettes pour les acclamations.	6 And Moses sent them with Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest; also, he delivered to him the holy vessels, and the trumpets to sound.
7 Ils firent campagne contre Madiân, comme Yahvé l'avait ordonné à Moïse, et tuèrent tous lesmâles.	7 And when they had fought against the Midianites and had prevailed, they killed all the men.
8 En outre, ils tuèrent les rois de Madiân, Evi, Réqem, Cur, Hur et Réba, cinq rois madianites; ilspassèrent aussi au fil de l'épée Balaam, fils de Béor.	8 And they put to death by the sword their kings: Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five leaders of the nation, and also Balaam the son of Beor.
9 Les Israélites emmenèrent captives les femmes des Madianites avec leurs petits enfants, ilsrazzièrent tout leur bétail, tous leurs troupeaux et tous leurs biens.	9 And they seized their women and little ones, and all their cattle, and all their goods; whatever they were able to have, they despoiled.
10 Ils mirent le feu aux villes qu'ils habitaient ainsi qu'à tous leurs campements.	10 Both their cities and their villages, as well as their fortresses, they burned.
11 Puis, prenant tout leur butin, tout ce qu'ils avaient capturé, bêtes et gens,	11 And they carried away prey from everything that they had seized, both of men and of beasts.
12 ils amenèrent captifs, prises et butin à Moïse, à Eléazar le prêtre et à toute la communauté desIsraélites, jusqu'au camp, aux Steppes de Moab qui se trouvent près du Jourdain vers Jéricho.	12 And they led these to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to all the multitude of the sons of Israel. But the remainder of the articles they carried to the camp on the plains of Moab, next to the Jordan, opposite Jericho.
13 Moïse, Eléazar le prêtre et tous les princes de la communauté sortirent du camp à leur rencontre.	13 Then Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the assembly went out to meet them beyond the camp.
14 Moïse s'emporta contre les commandants des forces, chefs de milliers et chefs de centaines, quirevenaient de cette expédition guerrière.	14 And Moses, being angry with the leaders of the army, and the tribunes, and the centurions, who had arrived from the battle,
15 Il leur dit: "Pourquoi avez-vous laissé la vie à toutes les femmes?	15 said: “Why have you spared the females?
16 Ce sont elles qui, sur les conseils de Balaam, ont été pour les Israélites une cause d'infidélité àYahvé dans l'affaire de Péor: d'où le fléau qui a sévi sur la communauté de Yahvé.	16 Are not these the ones who deceived the sons of Israel at the suggestion of Balaam, and who caused you betray the Lord by the sin of Peor, because of which the people also were struck down?
17 Tuez donc tous les enfants mâles. Tuez aussi toutes les femmes qui ont connu un homme enpartageant sa couche.	17 Therefore, put to death all of them: whatever is of the male sex, even among the little ones, and cut the throats of those women who have known men by sexual relations.
18 Ne laissez la vie qu'aux petites filles qui n'ont pas partagé la couche d'un homme, et qu'ellessoient à vous.	18 But the young girls, and all female virgins, reserve for yourselves.
19 Quant à vous, campez durant sept jours hors du camp, vous tous qui avez tué quelqu'un outouché un cadavre. Purifiez-vous, vous et vos prisonniers, le troisième et le septième jour;	19 And remain beyond the camp for seven days. Whoever has killed a man, or who has touched one that was killed, shall be purified on the third day and on the seventh day.
20 purifiez aussi tous les vêtements, tous les objets en peau, tous les tissus en poil de chèvre, tousles objets en bois."	20 And all of the spoils, whether it is a garment, or a vessel, or another useful thing, made from the pelts or hair of goats, or from wood, shall be expiated.”
21 Eléazar le prêtre dit aux combattants qui revenaient de cette campagne: "Voici un article de laLoi que Yahvé a prescrite à Moïse.	21 Likewise, Eleazar the priest spoke in this manner to the men of the army who had fought: “This is the precept of the law, which the Lord has commanded Moses:
22 Toutefois l'or, l'argent, le bronze, le fer, l'étain, le plomb,	22 Gold, and silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin,
23 tout ce qui peut aller au feu, vous le ferez passer par le feu et cela sera pur; mais c'est par leseaux lustrales que cela sera purifié. Et tout ce qui ne peut aller au feu vous le ferez passer par l'eau."	23 and all that may be able to pass through fire, shall be purified by fire. But whatever is not able to sustain fire shall be sanctified with the waters of expiation.
24 Vous laverez vos vêtements le septième jour et vous serez purs. Vous pourrez ensuite rentrer aucamp.	24 And you shall wash your garments on the seventh day, and, after having been purified, you shall enter the camp.”
25 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:	25 And the Lord also said to Moses:
26 "Avec Eléazar le prêtre et les chefs de famille de la communauté, fais le compte des prises etdes captifs, gens et bêtes.	26 “Take the sum of those things which were captured, from man even to beast, you and Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the common people.
27 Puis tu partageras les prises, par moitié, entre les combattants qui ont fait la campagne etl'ensemble de la communauté.	27 And you shall divide the prey equally, among those who went out to war and fought, and among the remainder of the multitude.
28 Comme redevance pour Yahvé, tu prélèveras, sur la part des combattants qui ont fait lacampagne, un sur 500 des gens, du gros bétail, des ânes et du petit bétail.	28 And you shall separate a portion for the Lord from the portion of those who fought and were in the battle: one soul out of five hundred, as much from humans, as from oxen and donkeys and sheep.
29 Tu prendras cela sur la moitié qui leur revient, et tu le donneras à Eléazar le prêtre, commeprélèvement pour Yahvé.	29 And you shall give it to Eleazar the priest, because these are the first-fruits of the Lord.
30 Sur la moitié qui revient aux Israélites tu prendras un sur 50 des gens, du gros bétail, des ânes etdu petit bétail, de toutes les bêtes, et tu le donneras aux Lévites qui assument la charge de la Demeure deYahvé."	30 Likewise, from the half of the portion belonging to the sons of Israel, you shall receive the fiftieth head of humans, and of oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, and of all living things, and you shall give these to the Levites who stand watch over the care of the tabernacle of the Lord.”
31 Moïse et Eléazar le prêtre firent comme Yahvé l'avait commandé à Moïse.	31 And Moses and Eleazar did just as the Lord had instructed.
32 Or les prises, le reste du butin que la troupe partie en campagne avait razzié, se montaient àmille têtes de petit bétail,	32 Now the prey which the army had seized was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,
33 72.000 têtes de gros bétail,	33 seventy-two thousand oxen,
34 61.000 ânes,	34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,
35 et, en fait de gens, de femmes n'ayant pas partagé la couche d'un homme, mille personnes entout.	35 and thirty-two thousand human lives, of the female sex, who had not known men.
36 La moitié en fut assignée à ceux qui avaient fait campagne, soit 337.500 têtes de petit bétail,	36 And one half of the portion was given to those who had been in the battle: three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep.
37 dont 675 en redevance pour Yahvé,	37 From these, for the portion of the Lord, there were accounted: six hundred seventy-five sheep;
38 36.000 têtes de gros bétail, dont 72 en redevance pour Yahvé,	38 and from the thirty-six thousand oxen, seventy-two oxen;
39 30.500 ânes, dont 61 en redevance pour Yahvé,	39 from the thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, sixty-one donkeys.
40 et 16.000 personnes, dont 32 en redevance pour Yahvé.	40 From the sixteen thousand human souls, there fell to the portion of the Lord thirty-two souls.
41 Moïse donna à Eléazar le prêtre la redevance prélevée pour Yahvé, comme Yahvé l'avaitordonné à Moïse.	41 And Moses delivered the number of the first-fruits of the Lord to Eleazar the priest, just as had been commanded of him,
42 Quant à la moitié qui revenait aux Israélites, et que Moïse avait séparée de celle descombattants,	42 from the one half portion belonging to the sons of Israel, which he had separated from the portion of those who had been in the battle.
43 cette moitié, part de la communauté, se montait à 337.500 têtes de petit bétail,	43 Yet truly, from the one half portion which fell to the remainder of the multitude, that is, from the three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,
44 36.000 têtes de gros bétail,	44 and from the thirty-six thousand oxen,
45 30.500 ânes	45 and from the thirty thousand five hundred donkeys,
46 et 16.000 personnes.	46 and from the sixteen thousand persons,
47 Sur cette moitié, part des Israélites, Moïse prit un sur 50 des gens et des bêtes et il les donna auxLévites qui assumaient la charge de la Demeure de Yahvé, comme Yahvé l'avait ordonné à Moïse.	47 Moses took the fiftieth head, and gave it to the Levites who stand watch at the tabernacle of the Lord, just as the Lord had instructed.
48 Les commandants des milliers qui avaient fait la campagne, chefs de milliers et chefs decentaines, vinrent trouver Moïse	48 And when the leaders of the army, and the tribunes, and the centurions had approached Moses, they said:
49 et lui dirent: "Tes serviteurs ont fait le compte des combattants dont ils disposaient: il n'enmanque aucun.	49 “We, your servants, have taken a census of the number of the fighting men, whom we had under our hand, and indeed not one was lacking.
50 Aussi apportons-nous chacun en offrande à Yahvé ce que nous avons trouvé en fait d'objets d'or,bracelets de bras et de poignet, bagues, boucles d'oreille, pectoraux, qui serviront pour nous d'expiation devantYahvé."	50 For this reason, we offer as gifts to the Lord whatever gold each one was able to find amid the spoils, in anklets and arm bands, rings and bracelets, and little chains, so that you may intercede for us to the Lord.”
51 Moïse et Eléazar le prêtre reçurent d'eux cet or, tous ces bijoux.	51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest received all the gold in its various kinds,
52 Ce prélèvement d'or qu'ils firent pour Yahvé donna un total de 16.750 sicles, fourni par les chefsde milliers et chefs de centaines.	52 weighing sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels, from the tribunes and the centurions.
53 Les combattants firent chacun leur butin.	53 For whatever each one had taken away in the spoils was his own.
54 Mais Moïse et Eléazar le prêtre reçurent l'or des chefs de milliers et de centaines, etl'apportèrent à la Tente du Rendez-vous pour faire mémoire des Israélites devant Yahvé.	54 And having been accepted, they took it into the tabernacle of the testimony, as a memorial of the sons of Israel before the Lord.
