| 1 Descends, assieds-toi dans la poussière, Vierge, fille de Babylone, assieds-toi à terre, sans trône, filledes Chaldéens, car jamais plus on ne t'appellera douce et exquise. | 1 Come down and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans! For you shall no more be called tender and delicate. |
| 2 Prends la meule et broie la farine; dénoue ton voile, relève ta robe, découvre tes jambes, traverse lesrivières. | 2 Take the millstones and grind meal, put off your veil, strip off your robe, uncover your legs, pass through the rivers. |
| 3 Que paraisse ta nudité et que ta honte soit visible; j'exécute ma vengeance et personne ne s'yopposera. | 3 Your nakedness shall be uncovered, and your shame shall be seen. I will take vengeance, and I will spare no man. |
| 4 Notre rédempteur, Yahvé Sabaot est son nom, le Saint d'Israël, a dit: | 4 Our Redeemer-- the LORD of hosts is his name-- is the Holy One of Israel. |
| 5 Assieds-toi en silence, enfonce-toi dans l'ombre, fille des Chaldéens, car jamais plus on ne t'appellerasouveraine des royaumes. | 5 Sit in silence, and go into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans; for you shall no more be called the mistress of kingdoms. |
| 6 J'étais irrité contre mon peuple, j'avais rejeté mon héritage, je l'avais livré entre tes mains. Tu les astraités sans pitié, sur le vieillard tu as fait durement peser ton joug. | 6 I was angry with my people, I profaned my heritage; I gave them into your hand, you showed them no mercy; on the aged you made your yoke exceedingly heavy. |
| 7 Tu as dit: "A jamais je serai souveraine éternelle", tu n'as pas réfléchi à cela dans ton coeur, tu n'aspas songé à l'avenir. | 7 You said, "I shall be mistress for ever," so that you did not lay these things to heart or remember their end. |
| 8 Maintenant écoute ceci, voluptueuse! toi qui es assise en sécurité et qui dis dans ton coeur: "Moi, sanségale, je ne resterai pas veuve, je ne connaîtrai pas la privation d'enfants!" | 8 Now therefore hear this, you lover of pleasures, who sit securely, who say in your heart, "I am, and there is no one besides me; I shall not sit as a widow or know the loss of children": |
| 9 Eh bien, ces deux malheurs fondront sur toi, soudainement, en un jour, privation d'enfants et veuvage,tout à coup ils fondront sur toi, en dépit de tous tes sortilèges, de la puissance de tes incantations. | 9 These two things shall come to you in a moment, in one day; the loss of children and widowhood shall come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many sorceries and the great power of your enchantments. |
| 10 Tu as eu confiance dans ta méchanceté, tu as dit: "Personne ne me voit." C'est ta sagesse et tascience qui t'ont pervertie, et tu as dit dans ton coeur: "Moi, sans égale." | 10 You felt secure in your wickedness, you said, "No one sees me"; your wisdom and your knowledge led you astray, and you said in your heart, "I am, and there is no one besides me." |
| 11 Un malheur fondra sur toi, tu ne sauras comment le conjurer; un désastre fondra sur toi, tu nepourras t'en préserver; soudain fondra sur toi une calamité que tu ne connaîtras pas. | 11 But evil shall come upon you, for which you cannot atone; disaster shall fall upon you, which you will not be able to expiate; and ruin shall come on you suddenly, of which you know nothing. |
| 12 Reste donc avec tes incantations et tous tes sortilèges dans lesquels tu t'es fatiguée depuis tajeunesse. Peut-être pourras-tu en tirer profit, peut-être sauras-tu faire trembler. | 12 Stand fast in your enchantments and your many sorceries, with which you have labored from your youth; perhaps you may be able to succeed, perhaps you may inspire terror. |
| 13 Tu t'es épuisée à force de consultations, qu'ils se présentent donc et te sauvent ceux qui détaillent leciel, qui observent les étoiles, qui annoncent chaque mois ce qui va fondre sur toi. | 13 You are wearied with your many counsels; let them stand forth and save you, those who divide the heavens, who gaze at the stars, who at the new moons predict what shall befall you. |
| 14 Voici qu'ils sont comme fétus de paille, le feu les brûlera, ils ne sauveront pas leur vie de l'étreintede la flamme; et ce ne sera pas une braise pour se chauffer, un foyer pour s'y asseoir! | 14 Behold, they are like stubble, the fire consumes them; they cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame. No coal for warming oneself is this, no fire to sit before! |
| 15 Ainsi auront été pour toi tes devins, pour lesquels tu t'es fatiguée depuis ta jeunesse: ils ont erré,chacun devant soi, et pas un ne t'a sauvée. | 15 Such to you are those with whom you have labored, who have trafficked with you from your youth; they wander about each in his own direction; there is no one to save you. |
