JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Lorsque ceux qui étaient encore dans leurs tentes apprirent la nouvelle, ils en furent frappés destupeur.	1 When the men who were stil in their tents heard the news they were appal ed.
2 Pris de crainte et de tremblement ils ne purent rester deux ensemble: ce fut la débandade. Chacuns'enfuit par les sentiers de la plaine ou de la montagne.	2 Panic-stricken and trembling, no two of them could keep together, the rout was complete, with oneaccord they fled along every track across the plain or through the mountains.
3 Ceux qui étaient campés dans la région montagneuse autour de Béthulie se mirent à fuir eux aussi.Alors les hommes de guerre d'Israël foncèrent sur eux.	3 The men who had been bivouacking in the mountains round Bethulia were fleeing too. Then al theIsraelite warriors charged down on them.
4 Ozias dépêcha des messagers à Bétomestaïm, à Bèbé, à Chobé, à Kola, dans le territoire d'Israël toutentier, afin d'y faire connaître tout ce qui venait de se passer et d'inviter toutes les populations à se jeter sur lesennemis et à les anéantir.	4 Uzziah sent messengers to Betomasthaim, Bebai, Choba, Kola, throughout the whole territory of Israel,to inform them of what had happened and to urge them al to hurl themselves on the enemy and annihilate them.
5 A peine les Israélites furent-ils avertis que d'un seul élan ils tombèrent tous sur eux et les frappèrentjusqu'à Choba. Ceux de Jérusalem et de toute la montagne se joignirent également à eux, car ils avaient aussi étémis au courant de ce qui s'était passé dans le camp ennemi. Puis ce furent les gens de Galaad et de Galilée qui lesprirent de flanc et les frappèrent durement jusqu'à proximité de Damas et de sa région.	5 As soon as the Israelites heard the news, they fel on them as one man and massacred them al theway to Choba. The men of Jerusalem and the entire mountain country also ral ied to them, once they had beeninformed of the events in the enemy camp. Then the men of Gilead and Galilee attacked them on the flank andstruck at them fiercely till they neared Damascus and its territory.
6 Quant aux autres, demeurés à Béthulie, ils se jetèrent sur le camp d'Assur, le pillèrent et s'enrichirentextrêmement.	6 Al the other inhabitants of Bethulia fel on the Assyrian camp and looted it to their great profit.
7 Les Israélites, de retour du carnage, se rendirent maîtres du reste. Les gens des bourgs et des villagesde la montagne et de la plaine s'emparèrent aussi d'un immense butin, car il y en avait en quantité.	7 The Israelites returning from the slaughter seized what was left. The hamlets and vil ages of themountain country and the plain also captured a great deal of booty, since there were vast stores of it.
8 Le grand prêtre Ioakim et tout le Conseil des anciens d'Israël qui étaient à Jérusalem vinrentcontempler les bienfaits dont le Seigneur avait comblé Israël, pour voir Judith et la saluer.	8 Joakim the high priest and the entire Council of Elders of Israel, who were in Jerusalem, came to gazeon the benefits that the Lord had lavished on Israel and to see Judith and congratulate her.
9 En entrant chez elle, tous la bénirent ainsi d'une seule voix: "Tu es la gloire de Jérusalem! Tu es lesuprême orgueil d'Israël! Tu es le grand honneur de notre race!	9 On coming to her house, they blessed her with one accord, saying: You are the glory of Jerusalem!You are the great pride of Israel! You are the highest honour of our race!
10 En accomplissant tout cela de ta main, tu as bien mérité d'Israël, et Dieu a ratifié ce que tu as fait.Bénie sois-tu par le Seigneur Tout-Puissant dans la suite des temps!" Et tout le peuple reprit: "Amen!"	10 By doing all this with your own hand you have deserved wel of Israel, and God has approved whatyou have done. May you be blessed by the Lord Almighty in al the days to come! And the people al said,'Amen!'
11 La population pilla le camp 30 jours durant. On donna à Judith la tente d'Holopherne, toute sonargenterie, sa literie, ses bassins et tout son mobilier. Elle le prit, en chargea sa mule, attela ses chariots et yamoncela le tout.	11 The people looted the camp for thirty days. They gave Judith the tent of Holofernes, al his silver plate,his divans, his drinking bowls and all his furniture. She took this, loaded her mule, harnessed her carts andheaped the things into them.
12 Toutes les femmes d'Israël, accourues pour la voir, s'organisèrent en choeur de danse pour la fêter.Judith prit en main des thyrses et en donna aux femmes qui l'accompagnaient.	12 Al the women of Israel, hurrying to see her, formed choirs of dancers in her honour. Judith tookwands of vine-leaves in her hand and distributed them to the women who accompanied her;
13 Judith et ses compagnes se couronnèrent d'olivier. Puis elle se mit en tête du peuple et conduisit lechoeur des femmes. Tous les hommes d'Israël, en armes et couronnés, l'accompagnaient au chant des hymnes.	13 she and her companions put on wreaths of olive. Then she took her place at the head of theprocession and led the women as they danced. Al the men of Israel, armed and garlanded, followed them,singing hymns.
14 Au milieu de tout Israël, Judith entonna ce chant d'action de grâces et tout le peuple clama l'hymne:	14 With all Israel round her, Judith broke into this song of thanksgiving and the whole people sang thishymn:
